2007 MCV Central (Part II)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It also could be that you e-mailed at a bad time.

Let's say she checks her email for 20 minutes at 1pm. You email at 8am on monday but there were 20 people who e-mailed between 801 and 1pm. So on her e-mail you would be #21. So perhaps she goes down the list from the top (ie starting with the person who emailed right before she checked it) and she doesnt have time to get to you until the next time she checks it.

Remember she probably has to pull up each person's file before she writes them back so that could take a while.

And I think that from now on, any day that someone drops an acceptance, they will send out an acceptance to someone else on that day.

Each day that passes Dr WC will have a better idea of where you stand. So you wont be stuck in total limbo forever.

Oh and if you are holding another acceptance and need to make plans for the next year, I would put that in your e-mail.She understands that you need to find a place to live and set up shop in whichever city you end up so that might make her give you a better idea.

Noland - I've also emailed her a couple days ago with no response, and it's hard to believe that she sorts through her emails and only responds to the individuals that are close to getting off the WL. I would think it would be much easier to just do what Dr. Heldberg did last year and say "sorry, it doesnt look good. I'd suggest starting your AMCAS early June."

To all that have yet to receive a response - Quick responses DO NOT correlate with great positions on the WL. I sent an email Wed. and received a response this evening. Im guessing that she is working late this evening in order to keep up with the flood of email requests.

i wouldn't freak out if wc hasn't emailed you back yet, this week is graduation at mcv and she is heavily involved in the many ceremonies and festivities.

I dont think u guys need to freak at all. i emailed her on the 14th and I had no response all that day or the next day but got an email saying that I had been accepted the next day. I think she is pretty busy right now and will get back eventually to everyone. Good luck to yall

Did she tell you where you were on the WL? I emailed last week too and was told I stood a good chance of getting in in the next couple of weeks!

Yeah, I was told something similar. Let's see how accurate the predictions are...

She didn't tell me "You have a good chance." Instead it was "if it continues to move...few weeks" or somethin' like that.

What does that mean?

I was told, "Obviously I can't make any promises, but we are getting closer to your position on the waitlist"

Wonder what that means!!!

"mms2k7, thanks for your email update, it is good to know that you are still interested in our school. I have noted this by your name on the waitlist. As you know it is difficult to tell how the list will move, but the out of state pool generally moves along a little better. "

the "i have noted this next to your name" refers to some updates i sent her with the ongoings of my academics/life.

Thats pretty vague, either that or she's trying to suggest i'm not in that favorable of a spot on the list. I have to give props though, she responded to me on a weekend night, at least i know the dean is dedicated.

I may email her to clarify...has anyone here recieved anything that can be classified as POSITIVE, to the effect of "your pretty high up on the list/your chances are good"????

Why do you guys still call this school MCV? They changed to VCU in 2004.

What are you doing in this forum much less this thread?

No one likes you DDS bound. Go home. And for the record, posting your stats in your signature is just plain pathetic

But I guess I will field the question:

The name was changed in the 60's but MCV has retained the legal right to use its name. When "VCU" was created by the legislature, MCV had been around over 100 years but the legislature decided to combine a community college (RPI) with MCV to create VCU. To richmonders, VCU has always been the name people call the undergraduate (formerly RPI) while MCV is what people call the medical school. The distinction was made because traditionally VCU undergraduate has been a very subpar school. Recently though, leaps and bounds have been made and VCU undergraduate is steadily rising. There is much bitterness about President Trani's decision to call MCV, VCU and students, faculty and doctors still call MCV/VCU, MCV.

Some people have received positive news...or at least news (see page 7 of this thread). I, however, have not received a response since I emailed her on Wednesday night, so I can only assume she didn't receive it. Good luck to you! I'm going to re-email and see what she tells me.

Whoa, calm down Chief. I was just asking a question. The school officially goes by Virginia COmmonwealth University School of Medicine. No? The reason I am in the pre-allo forum? I was slandered in here. If I leave now, it will look as though a. I was scared away or b. what was said was true. Neither is the case.

My understanding is that it's technically the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. Take that for what you will. I call it both, depending on who I'm talking to and if they're from Virginia or not. A rose is still a rose....😀

..means they aren't getting farther from your position on the waitlist, which is great because that just, well, wouldnt make sense.

Its actually Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine Medical College of Virginia Campus, a mouthfull VCUSOMMCVC 🙂

Everything that comes from the school is VCU SOM

Personally I don't see what the big deal is, I've seen it recommended that people applying from VCU SOM that they can note it was formally MCV to avoid confusion of people not hearing about the school.

One benefit of the name change is students there can make tshirts and other apparel that say MCV without violating any copyright infringement. The bookstore only can sell official VCU stuff.

She told me..."I can't promise anything for sure...we are much closer now than before..." at least thats the highlights.

Later, I emailed again and said something along the lines of "You sound at least relatively confident that I will get in this year....when?"

She responded, "Sometime within the next 4-6 weeks.."

Since she didn't contradict what I said, and actually gave me a timeline of when to expect an acceptance, I guess it's safe for me to assume that as long as the waitlist moves at least as well as last year, I should get in. Is that what you think she is using as the basis of her estimates? Last years movement?

Ha, is that what she told you? I think a safe assumption is 3-4 weeks= a few weeks.
she said it would take a few weeks to get to me "IF" the waitlist continues to move.

is this good or bad for an OOSer?

After checking my horoscope, it seems we have 2.3 more weeks of continuous in-state waitlist movement and 3.2 more weeks of continuous out-of-state waitlist movement. Since "few" means anything over 2.017 (rounding down), you might just have a chance!👍

Seriously though, none of us knows anything. Let's just hold our emails tight to our chests and refresh our inboxes 9836345663 times a day around 6 PM EDT. That's all we can do. May the force be with you.

hey instatewaiter,
thanks for all the info you've shared in this thread. i was wondering how long it took for you to receive your financial aid package from MCV after you were taken off the waitlist?

Just wanted to let you know that I emailed Dr WC on Thursday and did not get a response until Saturday morning but she had actually sent it Friday night. She said that there would be more acceptances sent out on 5/29/07. I found out from a good fried that is in Med School here that they make yet another list after people start dropping and the they pull from that, so that is why when she tells you that you are going to get an offer or that you most likely will you are probably on this other list.So new hope friends, it is not over yet🙂 Still more waiting😴

As itnstalln said the name is VCU SOM at MCV campus.

The naming controversy just rubs people the wrong way. Imagine if your undergrad was forced to be attached to a community college by the government and then lost the right to use its real name, all without any real say in the matter. People took it as a smack in the face. In the next decade or so I expect things to iron themselves completely out since many of the older doctors will retire and VCU undergraduate will become a more respected school.

Still though, alumni from MCV continue to refuse to donate to VCU and will only donate to an alumni association in the name of MCV.

Honestly I cant remember but it was by no means quick. I'd say call them and that will probably expedite the process.

very weird.. i just called up VCU admissions..and i asked the lady of the WL started moving yet.. and she said now..there have been no WL acceptance offers made as of yet???😕 😕

random question... do waitlisters send in transcripts?

Does that mean there would be no more acceptances off the waitlist prior to 5/29/07?

I'm not really sure at this point, but I emailed her twice to make sure on my status and she said that more offers were coming out on 5/29. I would just stay positive because there is alot of things going on with admissions at this time of the year and with the way things have gone who knows, but I feel pretty hopeful with what she told me🙂

i am assuming you mean your grades that were not included in your original application. i think its best to always update adcoms on any positive additions to your application. i know MCV has fixed scores for the waitlist... but let's say you are tied with someone... it could give you that edge! good luck to everyone waiting :luck::luck:

Chirp....chirp....chirp... crickets. Anyone hear anything new recently? How are my fellow waitlisted with no acceptances people holding up?

Not well. However, I did call the admissions office today and received confirmation that the waitlists are moving at a rate comparable to years past. So, there's still hope. Luck to all:luck:

Hey, that's good news. Hopefully it's moving faster than last year-from last years forum it looks like that was a particularly slow year.

And hang in there...I know it can be depressing. I have no job or school at the moment, so I'm trying to keep busy but it's difficult. Have you started making plans for the next year if you have to reapply? I'm doing it slowly-Dr. WC sounded pretty confident that I'll get in within the next 4-6 weeks, but I don't want to chance having nothing to do next year. Is anyone considering applying to the VCU post-bacc program?

Good luck everyone, and try to keep your spirits up!:luck:

Yeah, its hard to make plans with so many uncertainties.

I'm applying to the anatomy and physiology certificate programs. Anatomy is harder to get in cuz they only take 20 students and most of the spots are already full, physiology does not have a student limit, so theres a decent chance of getting that one!

Hang in there!! The game isn't over yet, but it's always good to have a "plan B". Persistence pays off - if you really want this, you CAN HAVE IT. This was not my first time applying & there were times when I was bummed beyond belief...especially when I was so used to hard work leading to success. I got into MCV off the waitlist last week and am SO grateful for my spot, mostly because I have been through this grueling process more than once.

My point is, keep your head up, solidify your "plan B" (post-bac, work another year, re-take MCAT, whatever makes the most sense for you), and don't give up hope!

:luck: 🙂 :luck: 🙂

I have a phone appointment with Dr. WC today. I am going to call her in a few hours. Does anyone have any good questions for her?

Just wanted to say how thoughtful of you to think of the rest of us in this slow sinking boat. I know that since MCV is not a rolling admissions that another set of accept. is due to go out after Memorial Day, just see if you can pin her down on a date or dates. Thanks again for thinking of us before you made your call😀 [Let us know the out come of your conversation and of course the best of luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!👍 quote=waterbuffalo;5183379]I have a phone appointment with Dr. WC today. just curious, does anyone know what the average step one board scores are for mcv?

Changes from year to year based on the class, so anywhere from 210s-220s.

Just got an email back from Dr. C. Apparently the OOS waitlist is moving rather slowly this year. 🙁

OOS?...slowly??....thats not good 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

the waitlist suspense is killing me.. i dno how you guys can handle it haha

I am applying to the anatomy certificate program as well, how do you know that most of the spots are already full??

The anatomy program fills up really quickly and is by far the hardest to get into. If you only applied to that program you might want to think about sending in a second application to the other programs.

I actually have been in contact with Dr. Leichnetz. I just graduated from Virginia Tech and emailed him concerning the situation that I was in after April 16th. He just asked for my stats and once I had sent those in he told me "not to worry about getting in" that he would just wait for my application to come in. So I am hoping that he meant what he said and that I don't actually have to worry. But I am still waiting on the word from VCU too...........

Yup he told me the same thing when I gave him my stats. But he said that because the program admits on a rolling basis, and that they only accept 20 students, your chances decrease as time goes by. Plus, hes on vacation from June 4th
Always a good idea to apply early

do you know how many students have actually been accepted into that program?
