1. The first HST interview date is Dec. 1

2. Interviews go up through like Jan and Feb, many of my classmates interviewed in Jan and Feb, but I doubt there are interviews in march

3. Last year, March 16th was when we heard about getting in

4. I don't "relatively lower" GPA and MCAT ever disqualify you from admission. It's really about the whole package. In the class we have MCATs from like 28/29 thru the 40s, GPAs from like 3.5 thru 4.0. I get the feeling that the adcom here is really looking for promise and future leadership in medicine, which comes from you as a person and your body of experience, and not just your performance on a test. It's of course still important to score well, but HMS is much less of a numbers-***** than some places, I think.

4. ZebraDx lives down the hall from me in Vandy (the HMS dorm) 😛

Thanks for giving us some info and hope 🙂 I love the HST program 😍, it would be perfect for me, but still haven't heard anything (complete Sep 11)...I hope I get my Christmas wish of an interview with them :xf::luck:

Happy Thanksgiving guys,

Few things:

1. NP students do not find out who are their interviewer until the day that you intervew. In the morning you are handed a sheet with your interviewers. These can be faculty or students. 2 interviews per person, either 2 faculty or a faculty and a student. No difference either way.

2. I dont know what the average gpa/mcat is for HST. I would be willing to bet that it might be marginally higher than NP because HST is a more research-focused program and NP is more "touchy-feely." Again tho, even in HST, they are looking for the whole package of your as person.

3. If you wanna know indepth about NP vs HST, read the website, its more than I can say. I can give you a gross overviews though. (keep in mind I'm in NP)

NP:

Traditional , block based classes. One main class at a time which is M-F (like biochem, or anatomy, or physiology, or genetics, etc) and simultaneously, one clinic class 1x/week (patient-doctor 1) and one "social" class 1x/week (like social medicine, health care policy, etc). So you're in class 5 days a week from 8-12 for your main class, and two afternoons a week (like 1-4pm) for your secondary classes. This leaves three days a week of free time.

NP has tutorials (PBL) but its not "alot more." In a typical day of anatomy, for example, we have 8am-9am tutorial, 9am-10am lecture and 10am-12:30p gross lab. So tutorial is like, 1/4 of your time, or less.

It's harvard, so lot of NP students have research backgrounds and research interests, but also public health interests, international health, community service, and other types of projects.

NP is 135 students

NP takes the first two years of classes with students from HSDM (harvard school of dental medicine), which is 35 kids, making the NP class "feel" like 170 kids. In fact the dental students take all our classes + their own classes. At HMS, dental school is harder than medical school, hahaha.

HST:

the schedule for HST is more like college, you have like a bunch of classes at a time, varying times and day of the week (like embryo, patho, histo, anatomy, or something like that, simultaneously). So you have multiples tests at random times cuz you have more classes, unlike in NP where you have like a midterm and a final for your one main class and thats kinda it. HST spends more time in anatomy and takes class 1 day a week or something overa t MIT.

HST is small, 30 students, so HST kids are very tight with each other. We (NP+Dental) dont see them as much though, cuz our classes are different. 3rd and 4th year NP and HST join together again for clinical rotations.

HST has a greater proportion of people who are interested in basic science research and have strong backgrouns in it. Most MD-PhDs are HST, but there are some NP ones too. I wouldnt say most end up doing research vs cinical medicine, but definitely a greater percentage of HST ends up in research versus NP (remember tho, theres only 30 HST students and 135 NP students.)

so....

In the end their both great programs, lots of ppl apply to both, get into both, and see which they like. Cant lose either way.

Tho in HST, you have to attend class, and lectures are not videotaped. In NP, theyre all videotaped, so you can watch em at 2x from the comfort of your room when its -20 and snowy outside. Clutch.

Sometimes though, ill be honest, it feels like HST students learn more. But it all evens out in the end when we get to third year.

Also, does Paul Farmer teach any classes, or is he just an administrator? Has anyone had any classes with him?

He teaches part of the NP "intro to social medicine" course. And by that i mean he gives like 3 lectures. Take from that what you will.

Thanks so much PandaBrew, that was really helpful!

Did you enjoy his lectures? What about that course overall?

I check my email about 20 times every day. Just to be disappointed and not see a harvard interview :/

I mean, really, he's just a guy. I guess his lectures were ok. Some of the other social med lectures were better. Depends who you are perhaps, my interests are more in the basic and applied sciences, not as much in global health, since that's not my background. Farmer's done some interesting work, to be sure, and we study his Haiti model in some detail. While I of course understand the importance of it, it's not my particular interest, but it's cool. Of course, those classmates of mine who are all about global health (of which there are many) are head over heels in love with the guy. Social med (and our normal classes) bring in some big-time people to lecture to us though, Farmer is only one of many. I guess thats an advantge of going to a place like this.

He recycles his jokes, I'll say that much, hahaha.

Social Med is a good course overall, low stress, gets you thinking. Lots of big-picture concepts to talk about. Very important stuff to learn, its all about the social and environmental causes of disease. Plus discussion is fun, its kinda dry to just talk about proteins all day. In fact, Im writing a paper for it right now.......

Hi guys, for those of you who already interviewed. what times are u guys usually done?

they say 8am-6pm, which is the longest time ive noticed for any school. ppl who have gone interview there. do u really end at 6pm?

it's very possible that you will be kept there until 6. for NP i was done at 2:30 (Nov 6) and for HST i was done at 5:30 (Dec 1). they tell you 8-6 to cover their bases and to make sure they can find someone to interview you at some point during that big time frame. harvard faculty are pretty busy, so interviewing applicants is often squeezed into their already ridiculous schedules.

if night flights are really an issue, then i would either 1) fly out the next day or 2) tell the admissions office you have time constraints and they may try to work with you to schedule you in the morning. HST is good about this, but i haven't heard of anyone trying it with NP.

as an aside, i met someone at HST yesterday who i thought might have been you 😛 haha guess i was wrong

gonna bump this so that the random hearting going on below doesnt shroud my question within the moisty air.

im surprised theres another guy who dares to go interviewing with long hair! 😛

and if u do see me! please do say hi. i am not as scary as some of the sdners on here make me up to be. 🙄😀

jla, would u know if any of your NP mates had a maybe 5pm interview?

i am only interviewing NP. i would like to take a 7pm flight and probably need to get to the airport at 530+ for that.

how long does it get to the airport from harvard?

I'm curious to know if I met either of you at the HST interview. You may have heard/seen me...I talk a lot to anyone who crosses my path.

yeah, on my NP day there were a few kids who were scheduled for interviews in the early evening (one was at 5 pm, i think. but he was a harvard undergrad too so that may have been intentional on NP's part).

from HMS it would take probably an hour to get to the airport using public transportation. a cab would probably be 30 min, but it would be significantly more than that if you hit evening traffic.

when are you interviewing?

hmm i don't remember...but i was the only female harvard undergrad there if that helps

22nd of december. pretty close to christmas.
its the latest date they offered, and its my birthday. had to take that 😛

because i have an option of flying on the 845pm flight or the 7pm flight.
if i take the 845pm flight. it is a huge risk for me because i would like to take the 12mn flight back home (via hongkong) to singapore via toronto.

if not, i can try and get tickets for the 23rd... but i just wanna go home... hahah... 🙁
feels rather anticlimatic if i dont fly home at once for christmas.

if i fly immediately, i get home for xmas eve.
if i fly the next day, i get home for xmas dinner i guess. its around 20hours flying time plus another few hours of stopover time.

but yeah. i dont think i want to risk anything at harvard. so i guess ill fly home the next day, perhaps celebrate my birthday with my toronto friends first then!

i didnt apply HST, but i would also love to meet someone chatty=P😀

I know it was a MASSIVE reach and I only got my complete email after I asked the admissions office about it but my heart still jumped to my throat when I saw a weird area code on my phone after my class... too bad it was 508, and not the 617!

Checking my e-mail 20 times a day paid off. I got an invite today 🙂.

grats!
i'm jealous though...want my interview 🙁
I was complete like september 10th so they've probably passed me by now

crash dont worry about it. if i remember ur mdapps correctly, im sure you'll have a choice of great schools to attend.

Congratulations! Don't you just feel giddy right now? When are you interviewing? I'll be there January 22.

so maybe if i start being more compulsive with my email-checking, columbia will stop ignoring me?

Ok, so I just got the interview offer from Harvard. But, one of my research supervisors actually never sent in a letter of rec., he said he wouldn't have the time. And I thought Harvard would just not look at my app. anymore, but out of the blue they offered me an interview. Does that mean they're OK with the one letter missing (it was my first research job years ago, and I only really worked there for two months...)

if its on your AMCAS (and especially if you are interviewing at HST) they might ask you at your interview where your letter is. this is how i found out that my undergrad premed committee forgot to affix a letter from my current PI to my letter packet, actually. (i'm really glad they asked!)

I think I might know who you were based upon this information. Do you remember a tall white guy? That was me. I met with Dr. Frosch towards the end of the day after we switched time slots to accommodate the person who had to leave.

How many people are accepted to Harvard (not matriculated)? I got an interview and I'm trying to calculate my chances.

pretty much everyone is tall compared to me 😉 but yeah i remember. i don't think we talked too much

anyone that sent an update letter, where did you send it do? Also, hard copy or e-mail?

where'd you get that info? i thought they accepted closer to 190-200... but i might have imagined that.

Well, Harvard accepts 130 NP and 35 HST, right? Since they included both in the total enrolled, I bet that the 240 is the total accepted, not just NP. So that 240 number is probably saying that they accept about 40 HST and 200 NP.

... except that's not what i was asking. 🙄

source, please?

5139 applied, 1171 interviewed, 208 were accepted, 165 enrolled

From US News, Fall 2008 admissions numbers

oh, except i should add that they told us on interview day that they were interviewing between 800 and 1000 people. so that seems like less than the usnwr numbers from 2008.

oh well, obsessing over this isn't going to make any difference

anyone that sent an update letter, where did you send it do? Also, hard copy or e-mail?

I sent one to [email protected], which I just pulled from the website. I did get an interview invite shortly after I sent it, but that's just the 'post hoc ergo propter hoc' fallacy playing tricks with my mind again. 😀

well go find it yourself then 🙄

that post of mine that you quoted was not in response to you, so i don't know why you're inserting yourself here.

i couldn't find anything that cited the numbers that you mentioned, so i was curious about where you found them. then anriar posted irrelevant info that didn't answer my question. i'm still curious about where you found your data because i'd definitely be happier if they accepted 240.

it looks like it came from here:

I think this site uses information from 2007 US News

Good luck! :luck:
