The reason why things at HUCM are seeming slow is because their admissions staff lost several people to retirement last year that had no replacements. There is only 4-5 people working in the admissions office so its going to take them a little longer to evaluate applicants...

Interesting that you would say this...a friend of mine who is MS2 somewhere else claimed they were extremely slow with their process (among other things) two years ago when he applied. Not to mention he applied after hearing even more not so great info from other students who had applied previously. I mentioned the comment you made and he said that he stands by what he said but also added that this past summer he met up with some fellow students from Howard Med and the feedback from them was basically "hey it's a Medical School so they're making the best of it but if they knew better beforehand they would've gone elsewhere". I'm trying to get him to join this site but he's been crazy busy this year (last year we drank and partied damn near every wknd...this year he has spent EVERY wknd along with week nights in the library studying) and even said he doesn't understand how other med students find the time to post...lol.

i am sorry i do not really understand your point.....is this suppose to be a headsup? There are always a group of people in every medical school that is not happy with there choice or have some complaints. I am not at Howard yet so I can not speak from personal experience, but I can say that in life you take the bitter with the sweet and I will remember your point deep deep deep down in my hippocampus. 😴

Ahh.. Thanks ...They said around nov 15 they send out the acceptances for our group so from now to then I will be thinking about did I get in or not.... and they send it by regular mail. So if you see a crazy lady on the news with a 2 year old camped out in front of the post office that is me😛

thanks, faith! you are super sweet! did they tell you when you will hear an answer from the committee after your interview? :luck:

Im sorry to hear that your friend feels that way. But because he is not a student here, he does not know what is going on here. We are slow because of the retiring of many staff who were in the admissions office. I dont know about the students he is friends with here, but everybody here that I know and talk to say they wouldn't want to be anywhere else for medical school and I completely agree. I love Howard with all my heart. The truth is that every school has there hang-ups. You can either choose to love the school despite its short comings or you can gripe about it all 4 years and make medical school one of the worst experiences ever. So in closing I would like to say, don't speak on Howard unless you go to Howard. HUCM is one of the best medical schools in the country. We have produced some of the heaviest hitters in medicine and have some of the most bright and intelligent people here. I wouldn't change my choice to attend Howard at all.

Anyways, just wanted to say congrats to everybody who has been invited for an interview and for everybody else who is waiting, just be patient and keep praying and believing. Your time will come when the Lord says it's your time. I also wanted to say, when you hear people speak on Howard, take it with a grain of salt, especially if they don't attend Howard. When you come here to interview, that is what will shape your experience and your view of Howard. So until then, stay opened minded and I promise you, when you come here, you will love it! God bless yall!

Ill be there on the 20th, I'm really hoping to get in too, I love the east coast!

Aight! I guess we will both be newbies to DC, I would love to attend Howard where I think the students will have much more in common with me than at any other school 😀!

i'll be there nov 17th...anyone else? i plan to arrive on the 13th and leave on the 18th by the way for anyone else who wants to have a mini vacation 😉

If you chose to take it as a "heads up" then for you I guess that's what it was. I was pointing out that it was "interesting" that students who applied two years ago also ran into a slow, unorganized process because "staff was retiring". And I just happened to share the other info because I for one appreciated it especially since it was coming from a current student who wasn't necessarily bitter...just not as enthused and apparently for valid reasons. 😎

I appreciate your response. But apparently you missed my point. Good luck with your studies.

Good Morning, good luck to everyone hoping to interview and ultimately get accepted to Howard University College of Medicine. I am a medical student here, and I make time to post because I care. Medical students who came before me took the time to post and help me with my application process, and I am doing the same. Sites like studentdoctor.net somewhat level the playing field for people like me who don't come from a long line of physicians. The information gleaned from this site can be very useful during the application process, just as long as you use a litmus test to decipher between what is useful information and what is garbage. As a future medical student that tool will be useful during standardized test and differential diagnosis.

I would not call Howard University 'slow'; I would just say that Howard University is very deliberate. When I interviewed here last year, it was apparent that the interviewer had read my AMCAS and secondary application. He referenced things that were embedded in my personal statement that were simply not mentioned at my other interviews.

Here, I personally have one on one conversations with my professors. Most of the Deans of the College of Medicine have an open door policy. The students here are extraordinary. The M2's have taken us under their wing and our class is really mastering the curriculum, and the match list this year was out of this world!

Just interviewing at Howard you are really part of an exclusive group of people. The application cycle 2008-2009 there were appprox 350 people interviewed here to fill a class of 115 people!!! Howard is not slow, just deliberate. Just like my boss used to tell me, 'DON'T RUSH JUST DO IT RIGHT'.

The class will be FILLED, many of my classmates have full-tuition scholarships! I even have a partial scholarship. Our class is SO diverse. I would bet that our class is arguably more diverse than any other medical university in the country (don't believe me LOOK AT FACEBOOK).

I know I have said a lot; I just wanted to inject a voice of reason into this forum! If you have any questions, just shoot...

Got an interview here this coming tues, and woke up this morning with a pink swollen left eye.... GREAT

hopefully the program's not bais to momentarily disfigured applicants.

you are so serious with the "negativity" . It's not fantastic with the swollen eye, but I am kidding n joking about it ... and probubly just whining about it a little for my own sake.

good luck to you too

oOOo! No harm, no fail... Thanks, for the warm rag tip. I'll definitely try it! Hopefully my eye will deflate some in the next few days.

And in response to the "slowness," I haven't noticed anything painfully slow about the staff at Howard. They are thorough, and one of the few programs that has yet to make a mistake/loose a form or letter of recommendations while working on my application. I would think as applications we would appreciate that they are not rushing through their review of our applications.

O cool, you have a two year old. Time to start forming that support network in DC, if you don't already have one. A couple of our classmates now have small children and they are making it work. It seems like to me, parents tend to be more focused when it comes to getting their work done and not procrastinating.

yeah i have offers of help from fam in NC. Every major city has reliable daycare so about April i will come up. The hardest part was getting a seat everything else is an adventure

Definite Class of 2014😍😍😍😍👍👍

I feel your love all ready thanks 😍. Long drive from Massachusetts 6 hours , and there was no traffic. That must be a sign! :xf:

Hey everybody, quick question.

On the secondary, they ask if you worked at least 20 hours a week for an academic year. Is that paid work, or does that include research/internships?

I answered as paid and unpaid as long as it was 20 hours

2014 Accepted😍😍😍

Interview was great, loved the school, and most of all the school had a family atmosphere. Hope to really go to HUCM. Good luck to every one.

Interview day was great. I loved the program before I visited the campus, and now after I've been here... I want it that much more badly.

Nov can't come fast enough.

did you all get a "file complete" email, or just the "secondary received" email?

I am having a bad day but what makes me smile is knowing I am going to be a doctor. For those of you that had your interview I hope you did well.

accepted 2014😍

did you all get a "file complete" email, or just the "secondary received" email?

After three weeks of mailing my secondaries from California, I received an email from Howards' saying that my secondaries have been received:

"We have received your secondary application and secondary application fee. Thank you."

Nothing about it being completed.

Just got invitation. So excited I thought I would stop lurking here! 🙂

I'm not a URM, but come from a disadvantaged background and have worked with URM patient populations. High stats (34, 3.9), but Howard doesn't seem to be too focused on stats.

I noticed this from US News:
5635 applied, 328 interviewed, 261 were accepted, 114 enrolled

Does that mean 80% of those interviewed are offered admissions?

How can they accept 261 students for 114 spots? can someone please explain!

They accept a lot students, because when other applicants are accepted at their state school they defer to enroll at HUCM to go to their state school to save money. These numbers probably include the number of applicants that were waitlisted, and still never got in. Technically they were accepted, but not enough seats in the class.

CAN NOVEMBER 15 arrive any faster 😕

No, accepted means accepted. Like you said, when someone turned Howard down in favor of another school, Howard had to accept an additional person to fill that spot. Some schools accept 3x as many students as they have spots for because of this.

did anyone else recieve the "COMMITTEE REVIEW COMPLETED" email that have already interviewed?

Yup I received the same thing but we won't hear anything until the letter is signed I guess in November

got the same email. I wonder if she sends another email when the letters are signed or if just have to wait till mid November to find out. Either way I am hoping for the best 🙂

Yes no matter where I live YANKEE JETS and GIANTS
Yes I got the same email but yes we are still waiting actually the wait is worse now because the answer is known not just to us LOL

Accepted 2014😍

Does anyone know if Nov 15 is the first round of letters that are being sent out? When did they start interviewing? Just out of curisocity.
