Accepted! Really can't believe it, I thought I did horrible at the interview! N for those wondering about the CBC, I didn't get an email about it, so I don't know what kind of indication it is. But anyway, good luck everyone still waiting!

Congrats!!! I was wondering if you were accepted via snail mail or email.

Congrats!!! I was wondering if you were accepted via snail mail or email.

It came snail mail. I'm not really sure when it was delievered bcuz the office at my apt. is apparantly bad at putting mail in the mail boxes. I had to ask them if I had any mail and it was just sitting in the back somewhere. Who knows how long it has been there. They really need to be better about that becuz by the time I got my letter, my 2 weeks to decide is almost up!!! But anyway, enough of my venting. lol. The letter it is dated Feb. 4 by the way.

Would someone be so kind as to tell me if interview invites come via email or via snail mail? Meharry emailed me 3 weeks ago and told me they would let me know about an interview decision "in writing" in 3 weeks (today). So, I was wondering if that meant by email or by snail mail. Thanks so much to anything who could answer this question for me.

Nevermind! I saw this on the website: "You will receive an e-mail confirmation if you have been invited to be interviewed." I guess I didn't look hard enough. Thanks though!

I interviewed February 5th and fell in LOVE with the school. I have one other acceptance, but I'm hoping to hear good news soon from Meharry, this is my first choice!!!!!!! Good luck everyone.

Awesome!

No med students tried to deter you from going there? I've read about that happening...😕

Really!? That's awful. The students I met had nothing but great things to say about the school. I also happened to meet two dental students while awaiting my interview. They seemed eager to to talk to us and show us around campus another time (we didn't get a tour because of the rain).

What negative things have you guys heard about, I'd be curious to hear.

I read on someone's MDApps that he had people pull him aside and tell him to go elsewhere if he got in somewhere else, and then I also read last year's thread where at least one current student was very down on the school.

It takes all kinds to make a community, though. Some will love it, some hate it, and the most successful will make the best of it regardless of how they feel about the school, y'know?

I know who you're talking about lol...

This is probably true of most schools. No place is perfect, but it's all about finding which place you'll be happiest at imo (if you're fortunate enough to have options :luck:) and not emphasizing the negatives so much. I haven't interviewed yet but from the people I know that attend...I hear the faculty really care about their students and the class seems pretty close. I've always gone to predominately white schools and/or been the only minority in class so it certainly would be a huge change for me. What did you like so much about it perfectpearl?

I liked the same things you mentioned:

The faculty really care about their students and the class seems pretty close. I don't like the cut-throat competitiveness that is fostered at some other schools I've been to, and Meharry doesn't seem to have that environment. They emphasized being "nurtured, and not spoon-fed" a number of times which I really liked. I too come from a predominately white undergrad, so it would be a nice change to see more people like myself in the classroom with the same goals.

Academically, students do well on the boards and get into competitive residencies in all specialities. I heard that one year the top scorer on the boards was from Meharry. Can't deny that I'll be getting the best education!

I have had Alumni, current students and staff tell me not to come to Meharry if I get in somewhere else. Their reason? Inadequate clinical exposure and lack of organization. However, they stressed that the end result is mostly dependent on ones effort and dedication. I know people who went to Meharry and are currently doing very well at top-notch medical institutions. I will go to Meharry if I get in. I also interviewed early Feb. I already received the background check email. So it's either acceptance or waitlist for me.

On my interview day one of the students at the lunch told my table not to come to meharry due the inadequacy of their pharmacology department. In general the students did not do a very good job of selling the school to us.

What boards? USMLE or some other specialty board? I know a product of Meharry won the Jack R. Anderson Prize for Scholastic Excellence in 2005

I really hate the fact people are blaming schools for failing them when in fact it is they who are failing themselves. Whether one attends medical school at Harvard, Meharry, DO or in the Caribbean, here is the cold truth: Your success or failure depends on you, you and you only!

If your input is 100%, guess what? your output will be the same!

Meharry accepts those who (most, necessarily all) will not have a chance of being accepted at other schools. What is that mean? It means that those students were not competitive to begin with and they were most likely below or slightly above average academically. Thus, some of these students will remain as such and, trust me, they are the ones badmouthing Meharry!

I have an interview with Meharry scheduled this Friday and If I am offered the opportunity to attend, I will definitely consider them! Whether I choose to attend Meharry or NOT will be for reasons other than the "school sucks," "Meharry is not organized," "the clinical rotations are not that great," bla bla bla...As a 3rd or 4th student, you are free to do rotations to clinical sites that are of your interests for the most part and your hands are not tied to Meharry pre-approved sites only!

Give this thing a rest, people!

Cliche. That is not totally true. A school plays a pivotal role in the quality of education that one gets. Meharry is a great school but they lack in some areas, maybe, due to inadequate resources. Fact!

That's false! The fact that MMC's mission is to reach the underserved does not mean it trains the under-qualified. I believe Meharry has a more holistic approach of selecting students. There are a lot of Meharry students with high stats.

Okay, nobody is saying Meharry sucks. It has areas that it needs work on. For other complaints, they came from some very good students, doctors and residents.

Good luck on your interview.

I was referring to the USMLE board exam.

I agree with what a lot of people are saying, your education is LARGELY what you make of it. If you're not passionate about Meharry and its mission, don't go. If you believe in what they've accomplished and believe that you can add to the school's success, I wouldn't dwell too much on the negative. The points about resources etc are valid, but quality of education you will receive at Meharry is undeniable. There are MANY great stories of success there and will continue to be as long as the students who chose the school believe in it!

YAY! got an interview invite for 3/19!! im soo happy
I will DEF go if I get in bc I love religious schools, and I love the mission. People always tend to think HBCU's are bad just because they are A.A.Well IF YOU DONT LIKE IT, THEN DONT APPLY. you will get out what you put in.

when i interviewed it was stressed that they are affiliated with the methodist church, which i took to mean it isn't exactly a religious school in the stricter sense, with praying in class and church/temple requirements (which are what i imagine when i hear "religious school", but i'm probably wrong as to what that entails since i'm a product of the public school system.).

On my interview they said the school is "Methodist Affiliated" which they basically said means that they receive a lot of financial support from the Methodist Church, but few faculty members and students are actually Methodist.

Congrats! When were you complete?

Yeaaaah...I think Loma Linda is the only true "religious medical school" that I know of (there might be more...). I went to an undergrad that was "Lutheran affiliated". However, outside of a non-required convocation ceremony which included a prayer and another optional graduation ceremony where they gave us a fancy bible that didn't really mean anything.

Head count!
How many people will be staying at the Millenium Maxwell on 02/28 – 03/01? Maybe we can chat up a bit that night.
..See y'all there!

ahh anyone interview recently get accepted??? I hate running home everyday to check my mailbox and find nothing there 🙁 any news from the late january early february interview groups????

I interviewed Jan. 22, and unfortunately recently got the WAITLISTED e-mail. Best of luck to all of you!

when i interviewed 2/15, they said it would take 2 to 3 weeks, and if we hadn't heard anything by the end of the 3rd week, to call.

looks like i spoke too soon. waitlist email shortly after my last post lol. that was quick!

It's good that they're pretty fast w/ the whole 2-3 weeks thing but wow a lot of waitlists. 🙁 Do they do post-interview rejections...or have they yet? It seems like I've seen mostly waitlists and acceptances.

I interview next friday and already feel like I'm just interviewing for a spot on the waitlist...

the way i remember it, it was like a bunch of people are waitlisted so they can give the later folks a more fair chance. so, it's not like they're interviewing to a waitlist because they're full (didn't get that impression at all), but rather they want to make sure they get the students that will really be the best fit. i'm probably not explaining this very well, but they will explain it when you're there.

FRom the posts on sdn, it seems like after interview they either accept or waitlist u. Has anyone heard of someone getting rejected immediately post interview?

Congrats michiganpsych! I interviewed 2/15 and haven't heard anything. I'm really shocked they got back to people so quickly.

Good Luck to all those on the waitlist!

I'm still waiting. Though I really didn't expect to hear anything till at least the end of the month...

Strange observation...if you read the beginning of this thread, you will notice that prospective students in the first half of the cycle had 2 interviewers. However, on my interview day, which happened to be on 2/19, there was 1 interviewer per prospective student. I wonder if this is only true for our group and whether people who interviewed on 2/15 had 1 interviewer as well! If that's the case, should we make anything out of it?

PLUS, fyi, according to Ms. Lewis, Meharry already has accepted 105+ students, their normal class size. Thus, I am not surprised at all that they give out more waiting-lists than acceptances in the second half of the admission cycle.

EDIT: Weather was beautiful on 2/19 and i don't think weather has anything to do with having 1 interviewer!

YAY .. waitlist for the 02/15 group🙂 Congrats michigan psych ( I think you were in the afternoon group sitting across the room from me during the audio tour😉 )

In anycase if Im not mistaken during the presentation they mentioned that they accept 2x the number of people into the class. Waitlist a lot more and after April 15th things get moving because as a school that starts in July, they get access to peoples AMCAS choices before the May 15th deadline.

Last point .. I was told there is usually 2 interviewer's and even when I spoke to someone at admissions 2 weeks prior to the interview that is what I was told. The day of the interview I thought we only had 1 interviewer each because of the wonderful weather( the roads were a skating rink).

Anyways, I wish everyone the best of luck and hope to see you there starting July. Yay MAPS?
