Wow, nice work, guys.

I'm still waiting on one last LOR, so I haven't finalized the secondary yet. (Learned my lesson from the PS, where I found a huge typo after I had already submitted it.)

Anyone else still waiting on a letter writer?

Yeah, I am still waiting on one letter. (Perhaps we're still waiting on the same letter-writer?)
I have 6 letters though, and 5 are already in. KU listed 5 as a max, but they said not to worry I had one extra. So since I had 5 they had received, I figured I'd go ahead and submit.

Now just waitin' on that interview invite!

Huh, yeah, I would be surprised if we weren't. Good job on the 6 letters, though! That's really impressive.

I'm only sending in 3. (Anyone else in that boat?) I have 3 excellent letters, but if I extended to 5 I'd have to either ask professors who taught me in large lecture classes years ago, or ask professors who taught me in small classes where I got As but rarely went to class. (Haha, my own damn fault. That's what I get for not planning ahead. 🙄)

For ur status page, did u guys see ur letters being received from amcas? I know some of u sent it in directly, but just wanted to see if something comes up on the status page regarding the lor from amCas

Yeah my status page shows that my letters were received - the ones I sent through AMCAS. Then it shows that my secondary was received.

It appears they only update the thing once or twice a week though. I wouldn't be worried yet.

can someone put a link to the status page please?

You need to log in, and it's at the bottom of the first page that pops up (before you enter the supplementary application). I believe you can only log in after KU has emailed you the instructions on how to do so. You can try it though. "Your UserID for logging into the KU Med Supplemental Application is your first and last name with no spaces; your Password is your AAMC ID number."

Anyone know where to mail the non-resident secondary fee to? It doesn't mention where to send it in the email.

You need to print out the Non-Resident Applicant Form, which can be found on the last page (page 5 - finalize) of the supplemental application, and send it along with your fee.

Thanks! I hadn't gotten to the finalize page yet so that's where my confusion came from. These essays are tough!

yeah. Ugh.

I talked to a med student yesterday who said she got her interview invite right around the middle of August (it was on her birthday, so she remembered). It's almost worse than waiting for the MCAT score.

At least you are in-state, OOS interviews are only in Jan/Feb....

Incorrect. They give out OOS interviews at any time over the year. My OOS friend got hers in October last year, interviewed in November, and was accepted in early December.

You are referring to an invite for an EDP interview, right? They said in that email they give short notice, but I definitely agree....worse than waiting on the MCAT score.

Yeah, that was for the EDP interviews. 🙂

Is anybody else logging in to the secondary thing several times a day to see if it "changed?"

Like maybe now it says "Engineer2MD is awesome and accepted" right under "Secondary received"?????

ha

I'm going days without checking it! But since you reminded me... =P

For inserting our pre-reqs, do we just insert the required classes or all classes that fit into the requirement categories? For example, I have more than "One semester, college algebra or above." worth of math classes.
Thanks in advance!

I got a secondary from KU...do they screen though?

Do all the OOS applicants have to have significant Kansas ties? In the MSAR/email they sent it said ties/ and/or "very unique background/experiences". I applied for the latter reason and now I'm wondering if I am just going to get rejected b/c my I don't have significant ties....

As for the post above, I don't think they really screen. I think the email they send, you are suppose to screen yourself.....based on the information they provide. I mean has anyone not gotten the email for the secondary?

The way I understand it, they send out secondaries to everyone. It is just another way for schools to get more money out of you - oh, and to learn a little more about you. 😉

Good luck to you though! :luck:

Their #1 mission is to train doctors for Kansas - we have a huge primary care shortage - so if you're OOS, they really do want assurance that you're serious about planning to stay in the state. Ties are a good way to do that, although I'd imagine there are other ways.

Still, according to this year's MSAR, last year 1588 OOS students applied, 106 were interviewed, and 21 matriculated into the class. So if you're really set on KUMC, you might want to send an update letter about why you want to build your career in Kansas specifically, just to be safe.

Thanks for the input, I will do that.

This wait is killing me!!! AHHHHH!

OK - when we all get interviews - what are you guys going to wear? I was thinking about going and buying a new suit (I'm a girl). Pants or skirt? Advice?

I asked an acquaintence at KU Med, and she said that there was only 1 girl on her interview day who didn't wear a suit (some sort of long dress instead?), and she really stood out - not in a good way - and didn't matriculate into the class. Granted, it's a small sample size, but I'm going to play it safe with a suit since most schools request a suit specifically. I don't know if KU does or not.

Conservative is probably a good watchword, though. I've only ever worn pant suits, but I'm going to look for a good skirt suit this weekend - I may even get one that's a little big and have it professionally altered, depending on the turn-around time. (My mother would be excited - she's been trying to get me to do that for years. 🙄 )

I will probably go with a pants suit. I need to start looking for one. I have a really nice Ann Taylor suit I bought 2 years ago. But--- I took some things to the cleaner last year and kept swearing that our comforter had shrunk. My husband called me crazy. I had a job interview and went to put on the suit before I left, and it had shrunk too - literally 2 sizes!!! OMG!!! I was hysterical! I was so scared that if I bent over at all.... It turned out ok and I got the job. I just stood up really straight and didn't button it. But yeah, I think I need a new one.

Long wait ahead. Good luck to everyone. I heard from faculty that there was ALOT of applicants this year. They are also considering at some point converting the wichita campus to a seperate medical school to meet the growing demands for physicians/students. I bleed crimson red and yale blue...go KU!

Good to know, thanks! I always feel better knowing as much as possible, even if there's nothing I can do about it.

I wonder if the recession is contributing to the upswing in applicants. I would imagine there'd be a bigger increase in in-state applicants than out-of-state, but it'd be interesting to know.

By ALOT, I think you mean OOS people. I don't think the apps from kansas will rise much more than the average 400. That's really strange b/c KU accepts about 2-3% of OOS people, that seems like crazy odds.

What do you guys and gals think?

I don't think the IS people will have to be any more competitive than we already are.

You would like to think that. Again, I did my Ph.D. at KU MED. I am friends with the professors and one of the Deans. All across the board. Re-read what I said. The demand in Kansas by students and for physicians has grown. It has been a steady increase over the past 8 years but even more so with the economy. Even with all my background, I am not assured of anything...and may even have to re-take my MCAT, go to a puerto rican school (which won't be that bad), or a DO school....all if I am lucky. Good luck to all.

Forgot to mention your 2-3% OOS data is wrong but if you want to think that, great. Peace.

While we will only accept candidates who are academically qualified to meet the intellectual rigors of a medical career, our focus on out-of-state applicants is to select those who will contribute to the depth and breadth of backgrounds and life experiences of the entering class. We carefully consider those personal characteristics deemed necessary to develop into a highly competent and compassionate physician. We seek applicants who have a sound awareness of issues in medicine and who have demonstrated their commitment to serve others. For the 2009 entering class, KU received more than 2200 applications for a class of 175. Of the 1800 non-resident applicants, approximately 100 were interviewed and 30 accepted.

(30/1800)*100 = 1.6% lol, you're right. It's worse!

Yeah that was last year. I heard from staff that a bigger portion of the class may be out of state in the future. They have a new curriculum (spelling/I am a scientist not a speller) also, which is irking faculty, this years' class will be guinea pigs for it I think. They always change the curriculum every couple of years but anyway. I have actually sat in on them discussing this stuff in the past.

But again, "Across the board"....means that it is getting harder for everyone instate and OOS alike...which should really just fall under the "Duh" category...and is exemplified by that 1.6%...but again these things are dynamic, not static and things are changing rapidly. Let me give you a hint. KU MED had to give back a couple of million bucks to the state of Kansas, due to budget problems. They may decide to take more OOS (Which I was told they would take 1/3 of the class oos this year possibly..which would mean, you do the math, like 58 seats instead of the 30 last year) to MAKE THAT MONEY BACK, because the school is hurting right now. So really you barfing up "facts" from last year....may have no relevance...welcome to medical education...where 50% is known, the other 50% is not known, but they can't tell you which is which. 🙂

Yea the phrase "depth and breath of life backgrounds and experiences" is what got me to apply as an OOS. I have very unique experiences so I thought I would stick out. But I was bummed to hear most of the OOSer have to have "strong kansas ties".....i wasn't too mad about the money, but I spent a ridiculous amount of time and effort on this secondary!!!!

I guess I'll start really freaking out now. :scared:

Weird... Why would KU post this notice to out-of-state applicants as a "self-screening" tool if this next year is to be so very different?

Let's say 58 spots were awarded to OOS students...

(58/1800)*100 = 3.2 % Still very slim odds and highly unlikely for KU to do this.

The posting above was intended, by KU, to inform OOS students of KU's heavily slanted interest for IS students.

Am I really "barfing up" facts that have no relevance what-so-ever? I'm simply referring to a message posted by KU that serves as an indicator for what this next admissions cycle will likely resemble.

It sounds like your involvement with this process is nothing more than over-hearing speculation and discussion.

I'm discouraged that in the case your omniscient know-how of all things KU MED is correct, that KU is randomly posting irrelevant information that is either 50% known and 50% unknown. The latter comprising a 100% of what you actually know.

I write in a way because I am rushed. When I physically was in admissions, I told them I thought I didn't have much of a chance even though my connections with KU run deep.......the rep (who may not know everything who knows, but she did have all of the applications, huge AMCAS stacks which I saw- she pointed to), said "oh, a third of the class will be from OOS". All I know is what happened to me....which I am just offerring for people to think about. Then I was told by a SOM Dean and several other faculty that millions had to go back to the state of kansas. So, here is where I am postulating, but it makes sense.....if they have no money comming in, it might make sense to take more students oos tthis year compared with for example last year.

"Why would KU post this _____ as a self screening tool?" Because it is data. It is data from last year for an applicant to think about. It is not written in law that it will be the same this year. There may be more applicants, there may be less, policies may change, they may accept more, they may reject more, they are just giving the applicant a "relative idea". Things change, one can not just read something like a robot and think that will happen all the time. All I was saying is that things over the last year at KU HAVE DRAMATICALLY CHANGED. I have spent 8 years at KU, getting my Ph.D. in the school of medicine. I gave lectures to the first year medical students and lectured in their histology labs. KU is considering putting some faculty on furlough the money problem is so bad. I am not being mean to you or anyone, I may sound crude sometimes, I am just telling you what has been going on. I am not a no it all. Even after all of my background I do not plan on even getting an interview, if I do, I will be stunned. The economy may have put an added twist to the application cycle this year is what my statements can be boiled down to in one sentence. Peace.

The 50% known 50% unknown and not knowing which is which......will be your medical education, which relates to the point that your medical education does not end with medical school and residency (which a lot of physicians it does because they do not keep up with things/advances/discoveries and think what they learned in med school and residency was from god's mouth). It is everyone's medical education and is just a blanket statement. I was just correlating that reality with the KU statement you mentioned, using an analogy. Medicine is not exact. Science is not exact. They are arts. There is nothing for you or anybody to be discouraged about. I have taken 3 medical school classes and have taught medical students ( I gave 4 lectures in 1 hour to them, for example). You can call me what you like but I pretty much have seen everything in academia and this year while I wait to hear what hopefully will be an acceptance somewhere, I GET to be a professor! YAY!🙂😴

Good luck everyone!!!

It just occurred to me - if the med student I was talking to was correct, and she DID get her EDP interview invite on Aug 13 or so last year (on her birthday) ----

THAT'S NEXT WEEK!

Good luck to everyone!

Hey guys...i'm a current M1 and did the EDP last year. Interview invites came out at the tail end of august for Early and then were held around September 14-16 or something like that, so I think next week is a bit early. Good luck!!
