Rejected via email yesterday. :-( *sigh* I really wanted a chance to interview. Oh well, at least I have an interview elsewhere in January. I wish you all the best of luck and thank you all for such encouraging and supportive posts. It seemed like a more negatively worded rejection letter than my other three:
"The Medical School Admissions Committee has carefully reviewed your application to the School of Medicine. The tremendous volume of applications for the limited number of positions available makes it impossible to interview every eligible applicant. Since final selection is based on a composite, which includes admissions criteria, supporting credentials submitted for consideration and an index of accomplishments consistent with the mission of the college, your application has been denied and will not receive any further consideration.

If you are still interested in entering the medical profession, I suggest that you schedule a meeting with your pre-medical advisor to discuss methods you may employ to improve your academic profile and strengthen your application to medical school. If you decide to reapply to the School of Medicine at Meharry Medical College, understand that you must submit a new application inclusive of any new course work, letters of recommendation, and MCAT scores. Additionally, this new application will be compared and evaluated to other applicants making application for that class.

Please accept our very best wishes in your efforts to attain your career aspirations."

Awww, I am sorry Deutsch Arzt🙁. I can't presume to understand how you feel, but i am sending good vibes to you😍. Hope you get some good news from your other interview in January😀. Good luck to you!!!

Hello!
I have an interview here in January. you elaborate on the curriculum as to whether it is systems based etc. ? Also how does a typical day for a first year look? Is it 8 am to 5 pm? Is there time during the day for studying? Thank you!

Baring any curriculum changes that I’m not aware of, this is how it goes:
I would describe the curriculum as a modified systems based I guess. First year starts with MAPS (mini academic program for success) it’s ~5 weeks long beginning in June/July. You take 3 main courses during this time and it’s like a slower version of what goes on when the academic year proper begins. In MAPS and 1st semester you take biochem and gross anatomy. In 2nd semester you take micro, immuno, and neuro. Neuroscience is really where the “system based” curriculum begins where you learn histo-physio-path-pharm together. In second year you go through the rest of the body systems (musculoskeletal, renal, cardio etc).

Additionally we have a course called PPM (practices and principles of medicine) that stretches across the first 2 years. You learn ethics, the organization of the health care system, special topics in medicine and how to conduct a physical exam. The physical exam is taught at the same time as the corresponding system. For example, you learn how to do a neurological exam when you’re on the neuro unit and a cardiovascular exam when you’re on the cardio unit. You’ll also have practical exams with standardized patients (actors) in mock patient rooms where you’re video taped and marked on your physical exam skills (OSCE).

The majority of the classes are lectures however, they have integrated a lot more problem/case based small group learning sessions since I passed through the basic science years.

A typical day can be something like this (I have med school induced amnesia):
8-10 biochem lecture
10-12 anatomy lecture
12-1 lunch
1-2 PPM
2-5 anatomy lab
You have a certain number of dissections to get through in each block so you have to spend more time in the lab. So while you’re only scheduled for 6 hours of lab a week, realistically you might need to spend 10+ hours dissecting. That’s probably the hardest part of first semester. Dissecting can really suck a lot of your time.

I just wanted to know, how has your Meharry experience been like over the past four years, what specialty are you looking to match into next march and i will be praying for you lol, also how difficult has medical school been? and please add anything you don't mind sharing.

Medical school is like nothing I’ve ever experienced and it’s hard to put into words. It has stretched me to lengths I didn’t know I could reach. When I look back I’m amazed by how much I have learned.

I’m not matching in March. I elected to do a year long research fellowship. I’ll match and graduate in 2013. I’m pursuing ob/gyn.

Leadership in the school of medicine is changing. Our Dean of academic affairs passed away last month. We have an “acting Dean” and the Dean of the School of Medicine is still here. There may be some changes in the future.

Hey so this is probably kinda late to ask considering i Interview tomorrow but what is the interview format, i.e faculty or student, one on one or group, open or closed file? Just trying to see what to expect. Thanks in advance.

I had just one faculty interview. But from what I was told by my friends who interviewed last app cycle and eventually matriculated at Meharry is that during lunch with the med students, the med students are actually "interviewing" you and report back to the adcom.

Anybody else from the 11/21 interview date? We should be hearing back soon right?! :-D

Will you be doing your fellowship at Meharry? What do you think of the "acting dean" of academic affairs so far? Do u think the future changes will be good ones? How have you liked the dean of the school of medicine so far?

My fellowship is through a program at Vanderbilt but my research mentor is at Meharry. So the actually lab that I'm in as on Meharry's campus. The acting dean has really only been appointed last week. I have no idea what the future changes could be, but I think it's safe to say that with new leadership something will eventually change. I've worked with Dr. Collins before and I've very excited to see him in this new position. Dean Mouton has also been good so far. I find him to be really receptive to issues raised by students.

I am starting to get a little worried. I was complete on the 25th of October and today marks 6 weeks of waiting.

It was 8 weeks after I was complete in September before I heard back about an interview. Hope this helps....🙂

I just received an interview here for feb 27th. Seems kinda late. Does interviewing so late put me at a disadvantage? They told me I could chose another date, Im thinking maybe asking for January or early February. They have a pretty late secondary date. Dec "15th" so im guessing they maybe start interviews a little later? I just dont want to be one of the people competing for the last 5 spots.

They said 3 weeks I think... so Yeap! 🙂

How was your faculty interview?

Waiting buddy!!! I'm 7 weeks complete today....Hopefully the 8 week marker will be the lucky timepoint like southerngrl mentioned... 😀

So I'm not too keen on posting in Interview Feedback because really, I don't have much information that's quantitatively new.

However, given my specific query, I just wanted to let all y'all know (especially any other GLBTQ applicants), that my experience at Meharry, at least with my interviewer, who openly brought up sexual orientation (in general) in relationship to some of the HIV outreach that Meharry does, is gay friendly. I'm not sure if every interviewer is as positive; this particular interviewer is definitely one of the favorites of all of the students (Dr. O, for anyone there listening. The one who made everyone cry by going on leave for a year).

Also, on an unrelated note: Ladies, if you're going out with some friends who are women, it is no longer acceptable to call them "girlfriends." They are henceforth to be known as your "gal pals." This was decided unanimously by the group of interviewees who accompanied me back to the hotel for some interview beer/talk therapy. Thanks, guys.

Just wanted to chime in. I just interviewed at Meharry and let me tell you ... if you don't have the same childish mindset as many SDN users, are not preoccupied with facilities or name, or US news rankings and whatnot .. you will love your interview experience. The school makes use of what they have, and features a group of students you will not meet at any other campus I know of .. guaranteed. With MAPS, summer research requirement, certification in public policy, MPH, MBA, PhD opportunities, opportunities to work in the clinic out of 2nd year, preceptorship in first year, very hands on clinical experiences during clerkship (specifically during surgery), extensive mentorship programs, the 5-year option and paring with a second year student off the bat ... Meharry is a unique institution that will prepare you to serve with a humble heart and a genuine desire.

I'm hoping I get in :xf: .. a student hosted me, and chose Meharry over Harvard .. as a naive pre-med I woud have thought he was crazy .. but now his decision makes so much sense. I got accepted to MSUCOM .. but, Meharry is definitely my new number 1 option. Don't be preoccupied with USMLE pass rates, other opinions, rankings and what not .. at the end of the day, this is going to be the most strenuous 4 years of your life, spend it somewhere you feel you'll be supported and included. That is all. Best of luck everyone!

Wow, thanks for that info! I have an interview coming up and although I was already excited, I am ecstatic now! I hope you get accepted as well!

I'm definitely with you on this. The impression that I got on Monday was that it's a great place to study medicine.

ditto. After all, what matters is that you pass your USMLE exams and that's all dependent on the test taker.

Never posted on this thread yet, but I just wanted to say congratulations to all who have been accepted so far! I'm currently waiting to hear back for an interview invite. Does MMC contact you via email for these?

Thanks! That is my concern, too.

Who else is interviewing here on Monday 12/12? Where are y'all staying?

Oh, OK. I was going to get a room there also, but I ended up getting a room at the knight's Inn downtown. I hope the area is safe. Thanks for sharing, and see you soon.

I recieved my secondary application today,:scared: I hope it isn't to late for me? Does anyone if having a sibling in the school will help your chances? I realized that there is a space for that in the secondary, so that is why I ask.

People don't like to admit it but EVEN in Medicine.... "Knowing" the "Right" people can Help in a BIG way! Go for it 👍

Those of you who have gotten interviews, how long did you have to wait to be invited for an interview from Meharry after your application was submitted and complete?

Does Meharry send out rejection letters during interview season? I know some schools don't send out letters of rejection until all interview spots have been filled. I was just wondering if any of you knew...

I think you should give it at least 4-6 weeks. It took about 6 weeks for me to get mine, but i was also complete in August, so it has been a while. Also, I think they do send rejection letters out, because someone on here got one. Hope this helps.

So, here are my thoughts on my interview day
Location: Meharry is within walking distance from downtown (long walk, but doable), it seems like it is within a prominently African American neighborhood which is to be expected since it's a historically black school and it's also next to Fisk university (another HBCU). The area looked safe and people seemed friendly

Interview day: There were about 20 of us, broken up into morning and afternoon groups (morning 8-1, afternoon 10-3). We watched a video about the history of Meharry and then listened to a financial aid presentation. At the time i arrived at 9, the morning group had already interviewed. All 20 of us then went on a tour next, it was cold, so I didn't enjoy being outside (I'm from Texas, we don't like cold). The tour guide was a psychiatrist who seemed to know a lot about the school. The only thing I didn't like was that he did not show us the anatomy lab or the class rooms, I feel all applicants want to see those.

We then had lunch (paid for up to $7 dollars), but the food is cheap so this shouldn't be a problem. During our Lunch, some 2nd year medical students came to eat with us. Be on your best behavior because they are actually interviewing you too. They don't tell you this before hand. After the lunch, we were taken back to the library. The morning group left and the afternoon kids started their interviews.

The Interview: Low stress, my interviewer smiled and looked me in the eyes when she talked to me. Even though she was pleasant, she still managed to ask me questions about my strengths and weaknesses (often asking me to explain any), it lasted about 35 minutes and it really didn't feel like it. Meharry now requires all their medical student to do research while they are there (summer after first year, typically), so it would be nice to talk about research if you did it). No other students I talked to had stressful interviews, so this school gives you the opportunity to really sell yourself, i didn't hear of anyone getting rapid fire.

Suggestions : I stayed at a motel called the knights in for $34 (probably cheaper since i did a flight combo) It was a 30 minute walk from Meharry and a lot cheaper than the hotel Meharry recommends. Also get a shuttle for the $28 dollars which is suggested, i took a cab and was shocked when he told me that downtown had a flat rate of $25 dollars from the airport.

Hope this helps and Good luck to all
