Hahaha. My money is on Clint Eastwood.

lol on a serious note how effective are post interview updates? I am withdrawing from a non-medicine related class (boring/useless as heck too) so I could use the extra time for more volunteering and shadowing opportunities. I do plan on updating the school through email but will it have any effect or is my fate already sealed?

Got accepted this week after interviewing last week. Mark Scott said that the bar is "extremely high" and has NOT been lowered yet this year. It should go down at least twice during March, so everyone who hasnt been accepted definitely should not be worried quite yet.

On a side note, I have always been a strong lean towards UAB but after visiting USA I fell in love with South. Everyone was extremely friendly and seemed like they actually cared about the students. In addition, the curriculum is changing to a systems-based model which is great. What is even better is that the faculty has completely bought in to it, which should make the transition very very smooth. Something else that stuck out was the early opportunities for patient contact. Mark Scott gave the example of how even as students, we should be the lead in delivering a couple dozen babies, etc.

lol he said that during my interview too

Haha, yeah I am sure he did. I guess its a good selling point to use though, considering at most schools you are only watching the delivery.

Just received an email from a first year, Brent Griffin. The email read like it was directed towards students who were already accepted, but I am still eagerly waiting for that acceptance letter in the mail. Anyone know if the email was sent to all students interviewed or only those accepted?

Does anyone know if there will be more acceptances before the waitlist comes out?

so uab just released their waitlist like 2 weeks early... hopefully that will help with usa's waitlist movement when it comes out lol

Just called south to ask about the status of letters this year. she said no acceptances, waitlist, or rejection letters have been mailed and that it will probably be a couple weeks before they are able to mail them.

Does anyone know how common it is for them to reject post interview for in-state applicants? Or what your chances are if you are waitlisted?

called yesterday and they said not to expect any movement until april 1

I called yesterday as well and got the same thing. Did he mention to you whether rejections have been made? He told me that they are deciding whether to accept a few more or go straight to the waitlist, but made no mention of additional rejections. Probably wishful thinking on my part, but my nerves are shot at this point so I need something! He sounded a little annoyed, so I didn't press for any additional information...

no.. but i was really confused as to what they meant by movement. have they already sent out more acceptances since the last interviews? i dont see how they can go straight to wait list because they said they usually only have a small waitlist and most of those people get accepted.

Unfortunately, this seems to no longer be the case. I'm not sure why they still say that at interviews because it hasn't been the case the last two years if you look back at old SDN threads. South over accepts by a lot, so it takes a long time for them to even use the waitlist. The last few years, it didn't even move until June.

Spoke with Mark Scott recently. He said wait list will be put together 1st week of April and notifications will be sent then. Heard from a friend that he is currently on vacation, and updates will resume next week when he returns. Hope all of you aren't dying from anticipation as I am.

My guess is that they're a little behind due to waiting of UAB's waitlist to shake up the pot for their class. Hopefully waitlisters will start getting notification earlier than June this year. I am really hoping to join the class @ USA this coming year.

Thanks for the update. UAB's waitlist went out earlier this year than recent years so it will be interesting to see how it will effect movement there and at South Al.....or if it has any effect at all. Looking forward to good news from USA!

Well I was rejected in 2010 after interviewing and receiving a hold card. I also found a website that says they accept only 120 of the 225 applicants they interview so that's about half that eventually get cut.

Not sure how reliable the site that says 120 are accepted is though (the 225 comes from South's website)

http://www.college-admission-essay.com/med_universityofsouthalabama.html

I'm not sure about the accepted number, but the number of applicants and class size are both larger than the listed value. If I had to guess, I'd say that the number of acceptances is higher also.

Does anyone know if South has a scholarship application, or do they automatically award merit-based scholarships?

For clarification, South accepts 120 students average per year to fill their 74 spots. About 50 or so accepted applicants decide to attend other schools. This is what the wait list is for. About 220 are interviewed and about 170 of those are waitlisted or accepted in late march / early April I believe. so if you have a hold card, you will either be waitlisted or denied if I recall correctly.

i withrdrew my acceptance good luck you guys! south is a very homy school. everyone is "sofa king" 😀 nice
(NPR reference )

so now does usa notify accepted people with people with phone and rejected/waitlisted people with email?

There is a form they send out when accepted that says you are automatically considered for merit based scholarships but the form has some other scholarships that you might qualify for depending on what county you grew up in and I believe a scholarship for rural medicine.

Ah yea thanks...couldn't remember if that form said anything about merit scholarships.

Last year, waitlist came out on a Wednesday (March 30) at around 2:45pm.

If things haven't changed, then yes, it comes in an email. For those accepted off the waitlist, you will get a phone call.

Just called the admissions office and asked for an update. The lady said that the alternate list and rejection letters will likely go out the first of next week. And that there will be no more acceptances until the alternate list starts moving.

Thanks for letting us know! Now I can calm down my incessant email checking! 🙂

I know! I was doing the same thing then I decided to just suck it up and call south.

Looks like they jumped the gun. I'm on the Alternate list.

I am on the waitlist as well. I think you are correct about it being lengthy, with this many people on it just from this forum.
