My MCAT breakdown is 9, 9, 9. I was complete on 10/20. I thought I might be an underdog because of my MCAT, since UAB's average was a 30.

Their web site states 29.2-30.2 which means it is slightly below 30. You have a very balanced score so don't worry and perform well at the interview. You will be fine and rest is luck.

Is there an average posted anywhere for OOS acceptees? I've been looking but haven't found one...

I have not seen it but AMCAS has matriculants in AL as 253, median 30 and SD 4. It would be safe to say as an out of state student you should be median +. Once again you may bring something to the table which others don't have so short answer, who knows. I was told once (no proof) that day classes start most of the state schools in south are closer to 29 than 30, UAB might be slightly higher because of lot of great oos students and MD/PHD types and some of those the students are 1 sd above median. Good luck!

Thank you so much, that was very informative.

You are welcome. I looked at your profile and it seems you do bring a lot to the table kind of mature candidates schools love. BTW congratulations on your MD acceptance.

Congrats on the acceptances! Sadly, today was not my day but hopefully I will hear sometime sooner than March. Enjoy yourselves today!

Thanks, I really hope the committee sees it that way, too. I've visited the MD/PhD program and dean and loved everything they had to offer. Thanks for the well wishes and congrats on my acceptance; it definitely assuages the process. 🙂

And congrats to those of you accepted! Doesn't it feel awesome!?

+2, OOS. This school is one of my top choices! I'm excited about the acceptance!!!!!! I wish everyone the best who is waiting to hear back- hang in there!

Congratulations to everyone accepted. For the people who were most recently accepted, when were your interviews and what are your stats?

Was accepted Friday. Interviewed 10/25, IS 4.0 31

Accepted! Interviewed 15 Nov for regular MD program. I am an OOS applicant and I have to admit UAB blew me away!

I sent in secondary and just got "application wait listed". Am I skrewed? Will I even get an interview? My gpa is 3.4 and 31 on mcat

Congratulations to everyone getting accepted. To those waiting.... be patient, it is still early in the process. If anyone has any question please feel free to ask, I am a MS1 at UASOM.

I got an "application wait listed", 31 mcat 3.4 gpa. Is this just a slow rejection?

I am an OOS applicant with the status "Secondary Complete and Under Review" since early September. Should I have heard something from UAB at this point?

I don't know the right answer, but for what it's worth, I'm in the same boat.

Space reserved for prompt.

Please PM the essays or lack thereof to me when the secondary is available and I will update this.

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

For anyone considering UAB, I would take note of the fact that they have a mandatory attendance requirement for lectures. If you miss more than say, 15 or 20 lectures, you lose 2% off of your grade. That sounds like a lot of lectures, but that can be as little as 4 days out of a 9 week module.

That also doesn't sound like a big deduction, but when everyone is so close in performance, that can cause a huge drop in class rank.

I and many of my classmates are independent learners, and I want to learn what is going to be on step 1, not the random experiments some phd thinks are important. I guess they feel that stroking the lecturers' egos is more important than their students' quality of life or choices.

I will say that a lot of UASOM's administration seems to treat the students and their education as an afterthought, and are constantly asking us for our feedback but never seem to act on it.

To everyone here, I hope you get accepted. I would just try to weigh my options, and I may have given other schools a closer look if I had known what I know now.
Which other schools?

Also, would you mind giving a run-through of a typical day in preclinicals? Are lectures 8-12 or 8-5, etc.?

I know it says in the letter, but it feels weird to not officially accept my offer of acceptance. So...just double checking, we wait until we get the hard copy of the letter in snail mail to do anything, right?

Hey guys, congrats on all who have been accepted so far! And for those who have not, do not lose patience. Quick word of advice, there are many on here who are concerned about their "scores"- mcat, gpa... Guys, this is not what gets you into medical school. Sure, it can keep you out, but it certainly isn't the only thing that is going to get you in. If you scored on the lower side (26,27) no worries! If you did something significant OUTSIDE of the classroom that would be interesting to the committee (some unique service project, led a volunteer project, etc.), I guarantee you would be favored over someone who scored a 34, 4.0 gpa with nothing extra on his CV. Also, the UAB committee can see through people who are entering the medical field for the wrong reasons. They want caring, compassionate physicians, and if you portray that in your interview day you will have no problem getting accepted. UAB scores their applicants on a ten point scale. 3 points for "scores" (mcat, gpa). 3 points for extracurriculars (volunteering, research, service,etc.). And finally 4 points for interview. So again, stop worrying about each others "scores" of those who got accepted...because in all honesty it is not that relevant at this point.
(UNLESS you are out of state or MD/PHD!)
Good luck!

I haven't ever heard of that status. In the 'Explanation of Statuses' section of UABs internal application status check page it lists several possible stages for your application and I would guess the one that most closely resembles 'application wait listed' would be 'remain under consideration for interview'. In the past when individuals received the 'remain under consideration for interview' status it meant a variety of outcomes, including getting interview invites within a couple of days to a couple of months of being placed in that status.

With an 'application wait listed' status I don't have too much to offer as far as what has happened in the past. Not sure if that helps at all - sorry.

I'm OOS, have been complete since 10/2 (had to switch to MD-only after the MSTP rejection), and still have the "complete & under review" status. Anyone else in this boat? I'd really like to interview... 🙁

I've had this status since I was complete early sept

I'm oos and applied mstp. sent in the mstp secondary on 9/16. Haven't received any correspondence since :-\

In that case, I think you're still in the running. They got back to me pretty swiftly with a rejection.

Gosh, I'm sorry to hear that 🙁

Did you get a confirmation email from UAB that they received your mstp secondary before the decision came?

Thanks. That puts it into perspective. I figured there were probably more people out there like yourself.

Same here! Complete since 9/16, still "complete & under review"

Yeah, it really sucks that my exceptional research experience, publications (incld. 1st authors), and LORs couldn't compensate for a below avg MCAT. I really loved their MSTP and got along really well with Dr. Lorenz. *sigh*

Yes, they sent me a confirmation that a decision would be made within two weeks. Did you not receive one? Check your spam folder.

Thanks mate. I hate this waiting game.

has anyone who got :Still under consideration for interview" status an II?

I was complete 9/5 and got the "remain under consideration for interview" on about 9/10 or so. I just got an II this afternoon.
