I forgot to send in my waiver until today. Any idea if this will disqualify me from EDP? 🙁

update:

I did find a post from last year saying that the waiver is not necessary if all letters have been submitted through AMCAS.

I bet that's ok then. If your MEDS page says "File Complete," then I'm sure you're fine. 🙂

I messaged the secondary questions to the thread mod to be added to the beginning of this thread, but the questions are posted on last year's thread too.

Anyone familiar with how much the Wichita campus is expanding year by year? And how many people in-state usually apply to KU?

I had a meeting with the Dean of the Wichita Campus and they hope to expand to have 80 students per class. Currently they are licensed for up to 55 per year. This year they accepted 28 to the Wichita Campus for the first year. There were nearly 600 in-state applicants in 2012 and out of those, 170 were selected to attends. There are over 2,000 OOS applicants for 40 slots, so you have much better odds if you are in-state.

Has anyone been contacted about the interviews as of yet? My Secondary application was complete as of 8/2/12 and have yet to hear anything about the interviews. They are suppose to be conducted mid-September so I was thinking that they should be contacting people soon.

Just Curious.

I think they give pretty short notice for EDP interviews (< 1 week).

Nice to know. Hopefully that is the case. That does make it tough for those who need to take time off work...oh well, thankfully the US Government has an interest in me becoming a doctor.

Agreed. I'm glad my job was understanding when I let them know I may only be able to give a few days notice if I'm granted an interview.

Of the few of you who have posted, is anyone else interested in the Salina campus???

Is anyone else applying to KU currently in a graduate program? I'm in an MPH program and the secondary says that I need a letter from my graduate advisor acknowledging my med school application. Does this letter have to be submitted through AMCAS like the other letters of recommendation or can I have my advisor send it directly to KU? Anyone know? KU is the only school I'm applying to that requires a letter from my graduate advisor... Thanks!

I'm in an MPH program too. My advisor had a form letter that he sent. I had him send it to the admissions email address and it showed up in my secondary, no problem.

Amen to that!

CANNOT. WAIT. ANY. LONGER.

This is torture. Last year heard by Sept. 2 (Sunday before labor day) and the year before that heard Aug 31 (several days before labor day.) I am dying here. I hope this doesn't mean we'll have even shorter notice...😱

They probably are just a little back logged because of the additional slots they have available with the expansion of the Wichita campus and providing opportunity for the students to pick three campuses of interest and three interview locations. I am sure it is a logistical nightmare.

It said on the KUSOM facebook page that they will be sending out interview invites starting today for the EDP applicants... and last year they gave 2 weeks notice for the interviews.

Thanks for the info, I have not been on the FB page.

Got an interview invite for the morning session, Wednesday, September 12! Woo-hoo!😀

Got an interview in the morning session on the 11th!!!! Wha whaaat!

Will everyone who gets an interview be emailed today? I haven't been notified yet...I keep refreshing my email every 5 seconds....

Anyone have any stats from last year concerning # EDP applicants applied/interviewed/accepted?

Anyone have any stats from last year concerning # EDP applicants applied/interviewed/accepted?

I don't know if I have read any of that, but I believe that the overwhelming majority of the EDP candidates are Kansas residents. In 2011 they had 2650 applicants for the 2012 school year, 650 were Kansas residents and they were vying for 171 seats. That is a 26% acceptance of Kansas Resident applicants. Compare that to the 2000 OOS applicants vying for 40 seats or 2% acceptance. I am sure that the there is some differences between the EDP and the general applicants, but those are the stats that their website has, with the numbers rounded for easier math. Anyway, if you are a Kansas Resident, that looks like pretty good odds. In the interviews you can guess that 1 in 4 of the faces you see will be accepted.

As for interview statistics, they only have OOS interviews which only 100 were intervied, so 5% of the applicants were interviewed. 40 were accepted, so 40% acceptance rate for the OOS residents that make it to interviews.

As for the EDP interviews, other schools have interview groups of 12 people. If this is applicable to KU SOM, then we can see by the schedule that there are 6 groups per day, and by this forum, only two days of interviews, so perhaps 144 interviewees this year?

3 days of interviews, I know someone interviewing on Thursday

So I suppose potentially 216 EDP interviewees? It is potential that there will be fewer people per interview group. Perhaps +/- 50 people will be accepted? Guess we will wait and see. Good luck to all! 6 days to the first set of interviews, maybe we will have a better idea once people share their experiences.

I'm actually in Group C at 10:30.

I guess that means that we may meet at lunch, be great to meet people from this forum, but sounds like there are so few of us chances are slim, but who knows? I am surious about the down time they haven't scheduled there, the hour that the other group is in their interviews...maybe there will be opportunities to socialize.

That would be fun! I haven't bought an outfit yet, so I'm not sure how to identify myself. I'll PM you closer to the day. Lunch with the med students kind of scares me for some reason, is it having that effect on anyone else?? 😱

Wear a white carnation! J/k! 🙂

Lunch with the med students sounds like fun to me, but I'm biased because I'm friends with a few M1s there. I've heard that KUMed has a very friendly, open culture.

Well I haven't decided on shirt and tie combo, but I am likely to be one of the few noticeably older candidates with a military style haircut. As for the lunch with the med students, I am not too nervous as I know a few and I have worked in the medical field with doctors, nurses, therapists, etc. for about 8 years. Try not to sweat it too much, they are just people. Come with questions though, they are there to answer questions that you have, not to grill you.

I am lost about the carnation reference...May be I am too old?

Probably not old enough. It's from a really old movie. I'm just a dork. 🙂

Is that a silent film by chance? If so I think that I have seen some of it, but not all. Either way, I am sure that IrishTwins and I will find out someway to distinguish each other from the masses. Only Four more days and then its showtime for you. Good luck!

Yes! It is! Steamboat Bill, Jr. Wow, someone got one of my obscure references....

I can't believe I only have 4 more days! I feel like I'm not prepared at all. Been reading up on the healthcare system and reform, but I hope I don't get asked anything in depth about politics because I can't seem to get any of it to make sense.

They may ask you a question about healthcare reform and how you think it will impact your practice when you get out. Being a hospital administrator, I can say that the current trend of new physicians is to seek out group or hospital employment versus starting a solo practice. This is likely due to the high level of uncertainty in the future of healthcare reform, and who knows where we will be in 7 years when we are about to start practicing.

I believe they will likely ask questions more pertinent to your interests in medicine, which specialty you think you might go into, and what kind of practice you would be interested in such as solo, group, or hospital based, urban or rural, etc. The KU website has a list of sample interview questions here: http://www.kucareerhawk.com/s/762/images/editor_documents/Med School Mock Interview Questions.pdf

They will check to see if you know something about the healthcare changes, but they will be more interested in you, your interests, and why you selected to apply to KUSOM.

Try not to sweat it, be yourself, answer honestly, and rely on any healthcare experiences you have had as a resource to back up your beliefs.

Glad to know that I saw some of it, but I did not know the movie name. AMC a while back had some silent films that were good.

Good luck to all interviewees tomorrow! You are all in my prayers!

Interviewees, how was it? How many applicants per group? What were some interview questions?

Thanks for this! It helped a lot.

I put myself on an Internet ban so I could make sure I got all of my school work done plus interview prep. So glad that's over! It was pretty good, 1st interview was pretty serious, 2nd was very conversational and easygoing.

They asked all of the standard questions. Why medicine, why EDP, how do you serve the community, etc. A couple of standard ethical questions. No health care reform questions believe it or not. But I think each interview was very different, some people had totally different things to say.

So how many people were in your group, or were there today? Were they group interviews or were you alone?

4 people per group, 6 groups total. No group interviews (thank God). First one is 1-on-1, second is 2-on-1.

Altogether 72 EDP interviews.

Glad the interview is over. Glad to have met someone from this forum. So they are interviewing 72 EDP and we should find out Sept. 28th late in the evening. The interviews were pretty easy, but I thought it was interesting the way they seem to pair up interviewers with interviewees. For example, I was interviewed by a physician that started medical school at the age of 33 and I am going to start at age 32. I also was interviewed by a physician practicing in rural Kansas which I want to do as well.

Very interesting information and the staff was very helpful.

Good luck to the Thursday interviewers.

Sadly though, I was the oldest person there. 😎

I was the oldest one at mine too...at the ripe old age of 28. (I'll be 29 next week)

Hey, it was nice meeting you today also! And I can agree that I'm glad it's over!!!!

My thoughts were that the first interview was much tougher than I expected, and the second interview was much easier.

I read in my notes that all interviewers fill out the same form, which scores candidates - the two second interviewers give that form back to the first interviewer, who then presents you to the admissions committee. So, with the way my interviews went, I'm wondering - what if your second interviewers liked you a lot better than your first interviewer who presents you? Do all three interviewers get equal weight, or is it skewed towards the presenter's opinion?

Good luck to everyone tomorrow! Relaxation is key.

From my understanding, it sounded like the interviewers have equal weight when it comes to their opinion. 15 days!
