Lifelong Kansan. I understand that some of us have to be rejected, that's fine. I just wish the process was more "compassionate" 😛

I am sorry 🙁 But i know what you mean, I have so many friends who went to interviews well after me and received their response a while back.... oh the anxiety! Well cannot cry over spilled milk, with your stats I am sure you will have lots of other opportunities, that may turn out even better than you could ever imagine. This whole process is rough. On the bright side, I applied to a number of schools and KU was by far the most transparent regarding their process. I had one school where I submitted the primary and never heard anything, other schools that I still have not heard anything from, and a school that took five months to render a decision from my interview date.

They have to keep their options open because they do not know how many students will decline to interview, withdraw, blow their interview completely, and how many students will come in and wow them. I agree that it is tough to wait a long time, but at least you were kept around instead of the 1/3 of those that interviewed that got straight up rejections.

Keep your chin up and I am sure you will have more luck next time.

Alternate list #34. Honestly, I didn't want to stay in the Johnson County Bubble my entire life so yea...I DIDN"T GO TO KU. sorry! I got an out of state experience. I have lived in KS my entire life. My dads clinic is the #1 referral to KU med. My grandfather was head of surgery there forever. So why is it being held against me I went elsewhere. This is so dumb

I know people who did it in the past. The way I understood it, the people who are waitlisted are given the application to apply and it is eligible to anyone who is an underrepresented minority and/or from rural Kansas. I haven't personally seen the application but I'm assuming that's anyone who is not from Johnson, Douglas, Shawnee, or Sedgwick counties but don't quote me on that. They accept ~8 and they take classes during the summer, fall, spring, and summer. If you have a 3.0 in these classes then you automatically matriculate a year from now.

Hey!! I heard they have one year program with guaranteed acceptance for minorities; that is if the grades are good. It also heard its by invitation only. It's tought on a town nearby and it's style is very close to the med school. There should be more info on the web. Good luck! 🙂

The fact that one of the applicants were saying how "dumb" that he/ she got waitlisted when his/her dad is god and his/her grandfather is the Holy Spirit! Lol

He basically was saying because "My dads clinic is the #1 referral to KU med. My grandfather was head of surgery there forever" that should give him an advantage to getting accepted. Which is stupid. So is his idea that just because he went out of state for undergrad is being held against him.

Don't be, during my interview they said no more than 25 waitlisted ppl were ever taking fromthere. They do a max of 50 to be safe. KUMC was voted one of the most popular school, even more than Havard, having 85% of ppl accepted going there. Truth is, no one ever know what med schools are looking for, nothing is ever 100%, so would've and could've is a waste of time in this scenario. But like u said, you still starting med school in the fall, the same cannot be said to many. You are super lucky, and just focus on that 😀

Yeah don't worry about it. You can't help it that your dad doesn't have a clinic that sends patients to KUmed.
I've heard that almost assures you a spot on the waitlist

I am. The benefits of going to KU were too good not to try though, but I'm pretty excited about the school I'll be attending. Just grateful to be moving forward ultimately.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't you post in what are my chances that you had a 3.2 gpa? People with much higher stats have been rejected and they didn't come on here trying to garner sympathy by calling an admissions decision dumb.

KU wants to graduate doctors that will stay in Kansas. Your previous post said that you went to an OOS school because you wanted to "escape" from Kansas. That does not sound like very strong ties. From the adcom's perspective, what is to say that you won't get your MD and then take it elsewhere?

I'm not trying to chastise you. I just thought maybe this might make their decision make more sense. Also, FWIW, I've lived in the "JoCo bubble" as you call it for 17 years and its not that bad. You only see that at KU if you look for it. Plus, you are going to have to get used to that attitude if you are going to be making a physician's salary because you'll probably end up living in a place just like it.

I'm sorry that happened to you and I know you must be really upset. However, I think everyone was trying to tell you that you can't make impulsive posts (especially with so much identifying information) because it shows a lack of maturity. Instead you should use this as an opportunity to better develop your interests, ecs, etc. Find the positive in the situation and know it is going to work out the way it is meant to work out. I wish you the best of luck!

Everyone is entitled to be upset when they get bad news. You are also free to express your opinion. I was just pointing out something that I thought might make your situation make more sense because I know it stinks when you think everything is fine and then suddenly you find out its not.

Anyway, what laptops is everyone looking into getting? I would LOVE a macbook pro, but that more than maxes out our financial aid budget, so I'm looking at the IdeaPad Yoga or the XPS 12.

I agree with Lysilegluleu. I've seen DO schools and they are amazing. High tech brand new great educations. MDs at teaching hospitals say all the time that DOs make great clinicians and don't even know they are DOs till they look at the signature. My cousin is a DO and she is making 200,000 a year first year out of residency as an internist in NJ. Check it buddy.

Well, I believe my reasons for not wanting DO is very "legit". My future plan is to be a pediatric plastic surgeon, I have wanting to do this since I was a little girl, I even double majored in Sculpture, and many organizations that I planned to join to go to poor countries to help with deformations such as cleft lip only accepts MD. I would choose DO if there was the only choice I had, but I would be giving up on something I really dreamed of doing, and this will allow me to have both. Sorry if I was not clear.

The one year program are to minorities who they believe can add to their school. I believe they choose 8 people and its basically all paid for, and as long as you maintain a 3.0GPA you get automatic admission next year.

The post-bacc program is for (ethnic) minorities and other people who you could consider a "minority" like non-trads and students from rural areas. You take classes at the KU Edwards campus for the summer, spring and fall semesters and have to be enrolled full-time. You can only take 400 level and above classes. Like URM4Underserved said, if you get a 3.0 or higher, then you automatically start M1 the following year. I don't remember it being paid for, I think you get financial aid. I have not personally participated, but I took a lot of classes with the post-bacs while I was finishing my degree at the Edwards campus a couple of years ago.

I didn't participate in the pre-matriculation program but as an M2, obviously had classes with those who did. It is a HUGE advantage to do that program. If is sort of "taught" by students who went through the program the previous year and you get lectures from faculty you will have during the year. You cover a lot of the material you will see in your first couple of modules as a medical student and get to take exams as if you were an M1. If you were invited to the program I would highly recommend it, as it will not only get you in to medical school provided you fulfill the requirements but also give you an advantage during the first semester, having already gotten lectures and taken tests over similar material.

Plus the added benefit of meeting some of your classmates early and becoming very close with them as you work through the program. As opposed to meeting 175 people all at once and trying to make friends from a huge pool of people.

I would have likely gone the route of the pre-matriculation program except for two major issues:
1. There is no listing for the stipend amount, nor a guarantee.
2. There is no rural campus option.

As a student of the Salina campus, I wish they had an opportunity to attend the course via webcast and arrange local hands-on opportunities. Since I already live near my campus, I am not looking to go to KC for several weeks and leave my wife and kids at home.

It sounded like a great program and I hope those of you who go will learn a lot. In the meantie, there only 10 weeks until we start, so good luck to you all.

I believe the non-need based scholarships are determined sometime this month. For some reason I remember that the KMSL was going to be announced toward the end of the month. I am pretty sure of that fact because I was trying to decide whether I should apply for the National Health Service Corps Scholarship before the KMSL results were out and I decided I would have to since the NHSC deadline is May 14.

As for the deposit, I think that will come as we get closer to the start date, and likely after the financial aid has been distributed since the KMSL would pay for any initial fees that the school requires. That is just an educated guess on my part, but rest assured that I have not heard anything regarding this either.

I haven't heard anything about a deposit either. My guess is that they are waiting until May 15 which is the deadline for people holding multiple acceptances to pick a school. I did receive a book in the mail, a gift from the Office of Cultural Diversity for the Class of 2017.

I contacted the Financial Aid Office and was told I was not awarded a KMSL Contract. I guess the decision for that has been made. Not sure when we will hear about additional scholarships and financial aid packages, however, they did say I was on a wait list for the contracts, but no clue how many are ahead of me or what the likelihood is that someone will decide to forego their contract.

It's called the Post-Baccalaureate Program. Office of Cultural Enhancement & Diversity runs it at KUMC. Great opportunity for underrepresented groups who already interviewed. I was accepted this year. To my knowledge there are 12 of us. I'll be starting at the med school in 2014. If anyone has questions about it, I'll do my best to answer. Good luck!

Just to clear one thing up... As I understand it, there is one 10k stipend. Not per semester though. Classes run around $4000 per semester though, plus one summer class, and you end up getting all of your classes paid for with the stipend. I think some people take out small loans to help with cost of living, and other expenses. This is just my understanding from all of the emails and memos I have received since being accepted into the program. Good luck! Any questions, just ask!
