You get scores tomorrow? Oh geez that is the word feeling in the world. I was more nervous for that then actually taking the stupid thing. Goodluck!!

I got a 28. I'm a little worried about my writing score though but what the hell. I should be competitive enough for UNM.

Good job! Dont worry about the L....no one cares.

😀 Congrats! Writing is so subjective, sometimes the reviewer just doesn't agree with what you're saying so they grade lower.

Exactly. They are doing away with the writing section for a reason....

Thanks guys!! The moment I saw my score, I was actually thinking of retaking cause I know I can do so much better on PS. I focused my restudying on this section but the timing and the nerves screwed me. I was hitting 10-11s on this section during my practice tests. But at the same time, I'm 100% satisfied with my BS and VR (especially) scores so I decided not to retake.

I'm gonna come up with list of schools tonight and tomorrow. Any suggestions?

Well the 28 is lowish for MD. But just grab an msar and go to work. Have you thought DO? Honestly with a 28 and a good gpa/EC's your probably gonna get into UNM....just sayin.

If you go to my MDApps I think I hit most of the MD schools that I have a shot at (29O on MCAT). If your GPA is higher than mine (3.45) then you are probably in pretty good shape for a lot of them, whereas they are mostly reaches for me.

DO is a good option IMO if your GPA is ~3.5. I have quite the list of DO as well on my MDApps

29? I wouldnt worry guys i think you are good to go. I hit a 26 on the mcat. Not ideal but my great gpa will make up for it....or so says admissions over at SOM haha

Yeah but my GPA from freshman year really hits my cGPA hard. Without 2 classes (C's) I would be sitting at a 3.6 and feeling good haha

Your sGPA is amazing IMO 😀

Hahaha thanks im using it as my crutch

Do you mind giving me the names of the MD schools you applied to?

I thought about DO but I never shadowed a DO ever and I think they require that. And I know there's not much difference between DOs and MDs but my mind and heart are set for MD ever since and I don't want to use the DO route as a back-up. I want to apply to DO schools because I want to not because I have to. Do you see what I mean? I will try to shadow DOs though this month and see for myself.

Some DO schools require a letter and some dont. i dont have a DO letter and am applying to 8. My MD schools besides UNM are strictly because of family influence : university of AZ, Kansas U and West Virginia U.

I have the best shot at UNM or DO. Since I can do everything an MD does as a DO im not worries not much if I get a DO acceptance instead.

Just found out that high-schooling in Albuquerque makes me in-state! Might be seein y'all next September!

I am not worried with letters though. I'm worried about not having any shadowing experience with a DO. I know my stats are good for DO schools but will this lack of shadowing experience hurt me?

Sweet! Welcome to the group! 😀

Welcome man! That makes what...4 of us? Hahaha

Dont worry about not shadowing a DO some schools dont require that OR even a letter from a one.

Welcome 👍 !!!

I wonder where the rest of the ~200 or so IS applicants are haha

Exposure of osteopathic medicine is definitely a huge plus. If you haven't had any exposure then you should definitely read up on osteopathic principles (whole body approach, etc...) and be ready to talk about that in interviews. But I think you said earlier in the thread you might look into shadowing, which would definitely help.

Hahaha well the less that know about the wealth of knowledge on SDN...the better edge we have? Maybe? I hope so haha

I did! They seem relatively straightforward. I was thinking about starting on them because I have a feeling at least #3 and #4 will be on this years app, if not all will be the same (like last year).

Here they are from last year if anyone is curious:

1. 1. At the UNM School of Medicine we are committed to building a dynamic, productive and positive learning environment in addition to promoting cross cultural and cross racial understanding among students of diverse talents, experiences, opinions and backgrounds. Share any unique or challenging factors in your background, such as the quality of your early educational environment, socioeconomic status, culture, race, ethnicity and life and work experiences. What would you as an individual bring to our medical community?

2. There are multiple paths that lead to medical school and many obstacles along the way. Please describe the unique path that has led you to medicine as well as any obstacles or adversity that you had to overcome in achieving this goal. How will this experience affect your career as a physician?

3. While providing healthcare as a physician is often a rewarding career, it is also a profession that entails addressing constant challenges. What do you see as the most significant issues the medical profession will face in the next 20 years, and what are some potential solutions for these problems?

4. Part of the goal of the UNM School of Medicine is to address the healthcare disparities that face New Mexico. Once you become a physician, how do you foresee yourself helping to address the healthcare challenges that affect communities in the State of New Mexico?

I'm gonna pre-write secondaries with these prompts starting this weekend. I think UNM's pretty late on giving out secondaries so hopefully secondary prompts this year will be the same as last year's.

Hahaha well the less that know about the wealth of knowledge on SDN...the better edge we have? Maybe? I hope so haha

I think so too! 😀

Hopefully next week you will! :xf:

Hopefully. So far it has taken forever!! Ive already submitted all my secondaries and LOR's for DO schools. Cant wait to start UNM's process though hahaha

Any word on secondaries guys? My app should be verified on wednesday

From what I know, only those under the WICHE states or have strong ties to NM and only a very very few of them.

What is there definition of strong ties? I'm from Kansas but my brother played tennis for UNM and even considered coaching there when he graduated. I have visited several times and absolutely love the campus and environment. If I discuss this in my secondaries do I have a shot? Or are they looking more for - (my dad works there, or grandpa gives lectures at med school, etc.)

Email and ask, i believe on their website it states that you have to have gone to high school, college or have lived in the state for a specific time. Or have family reasons to come. Its worth a shot!

I believe that UNM really wants strong ties, like graduating from a NM high school or college.

Right? I'm finished with all of my DO apps so now I'm just waiting for UNM!

You guys get the email about unm receiving your app? It says secondary essays will be given in mid august with interviews beginning in october.

Any one know of OOS with "strong ties" to NM? I got my masters from NMSU.

You might be able to swing it cause of NMSU. Email admissions and see!

I went to State and I know a girl that got her bachelors from here, but was an El Paso resident. She couldn't apply to UNM for that reason

But again you should email UNM, maybe there is something else going on with her

Finally verified today!! Yay! 😀😀 Submitted July 3rd.

Although, I'm guilty of slacking off in terms of pre-writing my secondary. I'm supposed to start pre-writing a week after I submitted my app but I just started last week! :scared::scared: I hate my habit of leaving things up until the last minute. 😡😡

I'm applying to 14 schools. I qualified for the FAP and with this, I got to apply to 14 schools for free. I received my first secondary today from New York Medical College. They don't have essays so hurray!! I'm hoping for more secondaries this week.

How about you guys? How are you guys doin so far?

Oh and BTW. Hopefulmd and rcheech, if you guys don't mind, could you just please edit your posts with my MCAT score and just delete the breakdown of it. Thanks! 😀

Done! Cant wait for UNM's secondary! I've already got 2 interview invites but man I want to go here.....

One more! Post number 53! Thanks! 😀

2 invites! Good for you! 👍 And it really sucks that no EDP applicants are posting on this thread. We could've double-checked the secondary prompts by now. I was really counting on them!

Sorry for the late reply, I did it! I've been in Vegas and haven't had much time on SDN.

Hopefully the secondary comes soon. I hate waiting on my #1, the longer the wait, the more interviews I have to attend = more $$$

Putting my hat in the ring here...

I'm hoping to get verified next week 🙂

Also- I have a friend that had a 2.9 GPA (not sure if cumulative or what) that is now a second year at UNM. Another student I know got a 27L that's in the same class. Showing a commitment to New Mexico in your interview is incredibly important- it's one of the reasons I have to reapply this year :/

Good luck guys!

So when are we gonna get this secondary? Its my last one and Its driving me crazy!

Got the secondary application. Can confirm that all the essay prompts are the same as previously posted. Hope this helps. Good luck!
