2013-2014 University of South Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My top choice!!! Can't wait to get this cycle started!! This is my hometown school 🙂

Best of luck to everyone!
I've never been so excited and so nervous at the same time. Happy to get this phase started. I'm sure its going to be a nail-biting process, but I am ready.

Good luck to everyone this cycle! This is 1 of my top choices, I'm hoping to stay in state for medical school.

Does anyone know if USF COM does formal/in-formal tours prior to interview season to find out more about the program?

I am currently in the M.S. in Medical Science program at USF. Will definitely apply here, probably not my first choice but I will go wherever lets me! Hopefully they view my M.S. at their medical school favorably.

Looking forward to applying here. BUT I am OSS (Georgia). Do you guys know if USF has a regional southeast preference or not?

I am OOS (CA) and want to apply to USF. All of my family lives in Tampa. Is it worth a shot?

They favor USF graduates, and quite a few people are accepted from USF in each class. A number of people do a master's at USF to improve their odds of being accepted at USF's medical school.

this is also my top choice, received my undergrad here 🙂 Bull for life!

Does anyone here know when USF sends out their secondary? It's my #1 choice, applying early decision - Go Bulls!!

I'm not sure, but their secondary hasn't changed significantly over the past few years. I think it would be safe to start working on the essay questions from last year's cycle. (you probably already are)
I would imagine that if you submitted for EDP already, you should be receiving it soon.
I am also going to apply here EDP, just waiting on MCAT scores, so if you get a secondary, please post a heads up for everyone!
Best of luck to you, I hope you get in.
Hopefully we might run into each other on interview day!

Just got an email from USF saying that Secondaries will be send by the end of the month.

For those of you that got that email regarding secondaries, have your apps already been verified?

+1

Yes, my application has already been verified. I applied to USF through the EDP and will also be attending the Master's in Medical Science program here beginning next month. Is anyone else here doing the 2013-2014 USF MS program?

I also will be starting the Masters in Medical Science program, however I will be doing the online track. Having a wife, 2 kids, and a mortgage I couldn't quit my job just for a masters program. Now med school... that is a different story!

Can somebody please comment on this? I feel like USF is trying to cut ties with Tampa General Hospital which is one of the school's biggest assets. This article makes it seem like USF just wants to throw their students at this location for clinical rotations so they can get accredited for a residency program in the future. It seems like everybody wins besides the students. If I go to USF, I would expect to do rotations at one of Florida's best hospitals (TGH). This seems like an awful move for a school that says its attempting to climb in the rankings.

I just received the secondary application today! It's the same as last year:

1. What do you see as the most likely practice scenario for your future medical career? Private Practice
Health Policy
Academic Medicine
Public Health
Health Care Administration

Why do you feel you are particularly suited for this practice scenario? What knowledge, skills and attitudes have you developed that have prepared you for this career path?

2. The USF Morsani College of Medicine’s Scholarly Concentrations program aims to support the educational development of medical students by providing opportunities for academic endeavors in areas of special interest. This program facilitates self-directed learning, enhances interactions between students and fosters relationships between students and faculty. Scholarly concentrations provide a forum where diversity of ideas and perspectives are valued. Each concentration includes elements of course work, practical application and scholarly presentation.
Please review our Scholarly Concentrations website to determine which concentration would be of interest to you and answer the following question. (http://health.usf.edu/medicine/educationalaffairs/scholarly_concentrations/)

How would the USF Morsani College of Medicine’s Scholarly Concentrations Program help your personal career goals?

3. Describe a time in your life when you felt you were “at your best." Why did you choose this event, and how does it reflect your potential as a physician?

4. Who is the best leader you have known in your life? Describe what made her or him so effective and how they made you feel when you were around them.

5. Think about a person who has helped you the most in your life. Describe what they did and said, and the lasting impact they have had on you.

6. The University of South Florida, College of Medicine strives to educate a very diverse set of students who bring a variety of strengths and interests to the field of medicine. The definition of diversity is broad and includes (but is not limited to) lifestyle, race/ethnicity, geography, socioeconomic status and distance traveled through life. The definition of strength is also broad and includes (but not limited to) humanism, scholarship, intellectual curiosity, research and leadership. How do you feel your particular experiences, interests, and passions will add to the strength and diversity of the USF class and ultimately to the field of medicine?

7. Describe your ideas about how the medical profession can best respond to disparities in healthcare.

8. If you have experienced academic difficulties, please explain the situation and how it was resolved. (Please explain all grades less than a “B” (including B-) or any “withdrawal” on your transcripts).

Good luck guys!

Are u EDP?

Secondary received, OOS, primary verified before initial transmission of data.

Just received the secondary... Damn this is the worst one yet 🙁

Any info on these options besides whats present on the website?

I'm OOS and I've received a secondary this morning. For the last question.. the academic difficulties one... would this include difficulties on the MCAT? I had a really bad first score that I would like to address but I am not sure if that counts as an academic difficulty or if they are just looking for grade or GPA problems

Sadly, this isn't true. While the MSMS program is designed to help increase the likelihood of getting accepted into professional school, there is no correlation between MS completion (or even USF grads for that matter) and MD acceptance at USF. I completed the MS program in August 2012, so I don't know if things have changed since then but I doubt it.

For the question that asks about the Scholarly Concentrations Program...are we supposed to discuss which one we want to do for this question? Are we only allowed to pick one?

Wait did they send the secondary out?

WOW. Not applying here. "Please explain all grades less than a B."????!!!!

Sorry USF. That's a bit much. Good luck to everyone else applying!

Yeah this secondary is pretty involved.

I talked about 3 I would be interested in. The prompt didn't say we had to pick one. I don't think we're expected the know which one we would want at this point. Just say how they would help you accomplish your personal goals as a physician.
