2014-2015 New York University Application Thread

anyone else having trouble scheduling the interview? it says they're only scheduling interviews for a 2 week block and that available dates are supposed to be highlighted, but all days look the same to me...

Congrats to all the II's! On a less exciting note... I just logged in and it says I was Rejected on 1/3/2014? Does this mean they've rejected me and just messed up the date? Given how NYU has handled rejections in the past (they email everyone who wasn't granted an interview after their season has ended), I'm wondering if this is worth contacting them about.

I've got the same thing 0_o

well eff ... accidentally pressed the withdraw button on the portal .................. -_________________-

Emailed the office. Hopefully they understand ... How do you have a button without confirmation either?

Wow that's ridiculous. It should be ok but definitely email. I'd maybe call as well?

First II, yay! But I can't seem to sign up - there are no highlighted dates and when I click a date anyway, I get an error message. Was anyone able to fix this?

You are looking in September, right?

yep, looked all the way through to October.

I'm having the exact same issue. I'm gonna give it a couple days, and if it doesn't resolve then I'll call. Also I've tried multiple browsers, and logging out/in again, with no change.

The third time's the charm. After clicking a date and getting error messages two times it finally worked the third time. These days were available: September 9-11, Tuesday-Thursday of the following week and Monday-Wednesday of the week after that I believe.

So im coming to the consensus that they are going through apps in order of completion and are giving direct feedback along the way? Those that got a "denied" on their status page, have yall received an email or anything too?

I turned in the secondary 7/8 and have the rejected status on my app portal, but no email

I actually don't have that; it still just says when I'm completed. Somebody who has it, call, will you? I'm curious now...

To those who had the 'rejected' status: mine has mysteriously disappeared. I have received no email from the school. Maybe it was a computer glitch?

Has anyone contacted them? My letters were sent around that time as well.
I just sent an email because I checked again today and my letters of recommendation are still marked as not received even though they were sent from AMCAS on 7/18. I'll let you know if I hear anything.
For anyone whose letters have been marked as received, is there anyone who had to wait 11+ days for them to mark them as received?

Mine were sent two weeks ago and they are still not marked as received. I emailed them last week and they said it was a problem with their developer and that it should be resolved by sometime this week.

Okay, thanks! That makes me feel less worried. Not that I'm ever not feeling worried during this process...

My gut is telling me that it was an IT glitch that accidentally revealed our rejected status before the date of 1/3/2015; which would be when they were planning to announce them (Consistent with SDN threads from previous years). Of course I'd love to be wrong and still in contention for an II, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

If this is true, which is what i happen to think as well, then it really disappoints me that a school would not announce such decisions sooner. there's no point in holding on to a rejection decision. sigh.

I emailed them and, like Temerit said, they told me "we are having technical difficulties and are working with the developer. This should be resolved in a few days. Please check your application then. We are sorry for any inconvenience. Please know that this will have no effect on the processing of your application."

Sounds good, I hope the completion date is unaffected. Thank you for asking them!

So I received an II 2 days ago. Can anyone fully explain the MMI process at NYU that has been through it? Do they often do a majority of ethical dilemmas, acting situations, general interview questions, writing prompts etc, or a mix of everything? And do the interviewers, if you are asked to answer an ethical dilemma or general interview question, engage with you and ask additional questions? Or do you just talk for 8 minutes and leave? Thanks!

I concur; from looking at the past thread they end their interview season in December (which means the last II's go out sometime in November); but they don't reject anyone until after the season ends in January. Although I'd love to go to NYU, I'd appreciate if they were like Pritzker and told me now that I was no longer under consideration.

I really don't understand why they don't. What could be the rationale for why they wait? Do they change their minds or something?

Because look at it from their perspective; they have 100% of the power in this situation. This isn't like purchasing a car where the buyer can take their money elsewhere if the dealer is being unreasonable; there is zero incentive for a medical school to tell us early because of the 1/100000 freak chance they change their mind and decide to interview someone they previously had in the reject pile. It's not courteous to make people wait until January if a final decision was made in July, but there's absolutely nothing we can do about it.

+1 for letters of rec! My other schools marked them received 7/16, but still marked as not received at NYU

I didn't really notice the withdraw button until I read your post. I could totally see myself clicking that while my brain is off somewhere else. Scary, hopefully you get it resolved. It's weird that they put it there so obvious, almost inviting...

Add me to the list of people wondering about letters of rec. Most of my schools marked them as received sometime between the 21st and 24th, NYU is the only one to still not 'have' them. Confused as to how this doesn't affect the processing of our apps, doesnt this move us back if our apps aren't yet complete because of the developer problem? Or do they know its complete and are processing it now as complete, just haven't marked it on the site yet because the site is the issue? (i feel like this is unlikely)

I'm hoping its the latter if its a site issue and processing is not affected.

I'm not sure if there are any current NYU students active on this forum.... But does anyone know much about the Master Scholars Program in Humanistic Medicine? It sounds really interesting and I'd like to learn more about it.

New to SDN but have been checking it out for a while. Got an II on Monday as well. I had the same issue because one of my professors took a little longer to write my letter. I was able to eventually submit it after I submitted my secondary to NYU and it still isn't showing up as received (they have my early letters though).

I emailed them and they said it was a system wide issue. They said the letters should be downloaded this week. Hope this helps!

So does that mean that they are issuing IIs without reading letters? Interesting! Good to know.

Some newer users think II = secondary. It's an understandable mistake. I would put my money on that.

Oh, I see. Thanks for the clarification. I genuinely am unsure of whether schools read LORs before issuing IIs or not -- if I was an adcom member, I'd want to, but I'm not so I have no idea how this all works.

Yeah I was shocked too about the invite. (I may be new to post but I've seen enough people make that mistake 😛 ). I received my interview invite before they received all my letters. What's more, the missing letter was one of my two main science letters, written by my pre-health advisor (so I would think it would be one of my stronger letters). I am baffled by this whole process.

Hey I'm super confused - do we have to do the tertiary application? I can't tell if my app is complete without it.

Bump. My recommendation letters are not showing up as well. Is the bottle neck due to the tertiary app?

No. I was complete on 7/14, II on 7/28, and I haven't submitted the tertiary.

It's Friday! Still no LORs 😀

Congrats to those with II's (includes a good friend of mine)!

Thanks for the info! Do you know when they received your LOR? Most of my other schools have received it.
