2014-2015 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was looking over the selection criteria listed on the website, and it says that
"Account is taken of the following: excellence in course work at the college level; capabilities as judged by college instructors and premedical committees; the results of the Medical College Admissions Test; and the results of an interview at the School."
Does anyone know if that means that apart from your interview, your application is really just your MCAT score, LoR's, and GPA?

II just now! I can't load their site though! anyone else having problems?

Complete 7/4 and still nothing from NYU. Anyone else in the same boat?

Hear hear. Don't think I'm going to be getting good news in January, as they seem to extend IIs in order of complete date. 🙁 Can't catch 'em all.

I think a few people with earlier complete dates got IIs in the winter (Nov-Dec), but I'm not 100% sure. Thought my app would be a good match for NYU as all my IIs are in their same stats range... ah well, time to start obsessing over the other NYC schools.

Complete on 7/30, II this afternoon! In state. Super excited! As of this afternoon, most available interviews were in early-mid October if that's helpful for anyone!

I was complete 7/27, and thought my app was competitive for NYU, but haven't heard anything either. Let's not give up hope yet!

I assume this is their version of "on hold," making us wait with no status update. But people that were complete in August are now getting invites so I have officially stopped having hope for this school. Congrats to all those who got IIs.

it saddens me that a school would SKIP over applications without letting dedicated applicants know about their status.

on the same boat. i'm actually hella tight at this point and feel personally offended. but i've actually decided, in a disgruntled, last-resort, gotta-make-the-best-outta-this-situation manner, that any school that has the audacity to silently reject and SKIP over applications without letting people know, is perhaps not the school i want to identify myself with anyway. there are schools out there who have enough decency to not even make an applicant waste their money on a secondary by withholding the secondary, and then there are these other schools. its just disrespectful.
If you are so outraged by the fact that certain schools don't have the decency to do screening for secondary, then why would you apply to those indecent schools? such as NYU? it's an open market, no one forced you to. You should go ahead and show your dignity by withdrawing.

Admission process is a complicated one, each school have different approach when it comes to sorting applications for review. The ultimate goal is to construct a great class consisted of people of diversity, of passion and of quality. It may take the school 1 day to realize someone is a catch while a month to debate upon the qualification of another. While it would be helpful for the applicant to know what's going on, the school has no obligation to do so. I hope you can get comfortable with the fact that except your mother, most of the things or systems in this world does not orient themselves around you and to prioritize how you feel.

Often times the school would rather hold on to certain applications because there are something that they like but they aren't fully convinced yet. They want to wait and see if there are other applicants who might be a better fit or they might want to see if you have something going on later in the cycle that would make up for your weakness. I don't see any of these actions being disrespectaful, but if you feel that for a school to give you a chance is wrong and you'd rather to be rejected outrightly then I'm sure that can be arranged by a simple phone call to the school.

The fact that you have enough audacity to be so entitled and to take things so personally makes you the type of person that I do not want to identify myself with in my future medical training anyway.

One person makes a judgment on an institute for a single component of their admissions.
One person makes a judgment on an individual for a single, disgruntled post.

Just chill, guys.

It depends on why the poster was being disgruntled, being disgruntled for school's error or for a rejection? Sure. Understandable. Being disgruntled because he hasn't been able to get his decision served to him on a gold plate after the cycle just began? No so much.
Funny thing is that, I couldn't be more chill in the literal sense--the type that's teeth shattering and unrelentingly painful--I felt like my bones were made out of thorny icicles. It was because of a week long bad cold that evolved to a pneumonia. Though I've been all right since last night after ER doc gave me some omnipotent antibiotics fighting off the little things.

I don't think that name calling is appropriate. I'm not a moderator, but I would appreciate it if we tried to be friendly towards others instead of hurling insults and acting hostile. These forums should be about sharing information and support, and I vote that we get back on track towards that goal. I'll start:

I'm getting really excited to visit NYU!!! I'm really interested in the curriculum. I've tried to find this on their website, but is the curriculum lecture based or PBL based or both? And are lectures mandatory? Also, does anyone know how competitive the Honors program is to get into? I feel like I should be able to find this stuff online but I can't always find what I'm looking for, haha

Sorry if this question has been answered, but did you guys receive an email after submitting your secondary?

Yep, it said
"This will inform you that we have received all forms and credentials required to complete your application. The Committee on Admissions will notify you as soon as any final action is taken."

Yay got an interview! Don't know why; 33 MCAT not UM. I expected to be rejected.

I have the same score and am currently working on the app! What was your GPA if you don't mind me asking?

Did you guys complete the Tertiary Application as well before the interview invites?

you don't have to fill out the tertiary at all, right?
still trying to finish my last 3 secondaries!
complete 8/15, nyu is a reach but im being overly optimistic 🙂

The tertiary application is for the 3 year MD program, so if you're not planning on applying to the 3 year MD program you do not have to fill out the tertiary application at all. If you are interested in that program, you still do not have to fill out the tertiary application right away. The deadline for that is about 3 months after the deadline for the secondary. Think of them as two separate submissions.

I got in on this round of II's too! It's my first one so far so I'm really excited! Complete 8/1

I'm getting so excited to visit. Does anyone know anything about the housing options aside from what's on the website? They look promising!! Also I've never lived downtown in a big city. Anyone have any insight into what it's like?

native New Yorker here - no way to really describe downtown NYC haha, it's just a special place 🙂 just be conscious of how rushy and bustley New Yorkers are. don't be moseying in the middle of the sidewalk blocking people from walking by, etc. - they will get mad, and maybe a little rude. the biggest shock may be just the pace of the city/citizens

also, unfortunately, downtown/NYU area is where you start to hit named roads - otherwise, NYC is incredibly easy to navigate with its numbered streets & avenues

I definitely think the pace and personality will take a bit of getting used to, as I've only ever lived in the PNW! But I'm excited to experience the city when I visit 🙂 thanks for the info!! Is the area around NYU (Murray hill / kips bay, right?) nice? What about crime level?
