CAMPUS ASSIGNMENTS
Our selection process is described at KU School of Medicine Selection Process. Applicants’ campus preferences are not part of the admission decisions. The campus assignment process is as follows:
The campus assignment process will occur in late March after all acceptance offers have been extended and the master alternate list has been formulated.
If the number of accepted applicants with first campus preferences exceeds the number of available positions on that campus, the Admissions Committee will determine students assigned to that campus. Applicants not assigned to first campus preference will be rank ordered for a “campus-pending” list and may later be offered a seat on the preferred campus. These applicants will be given priority for campus preference over applicants accepted from the alternate list.
If the number of accepted applicants with first campus preferences is fewer than the number of available positions for a campus, the Admissions Committee will select applicant names from the oversubscribed campus. Only applicants with documented extenuating circumstances may be excluded from the process. Approved extenuating circumstances are the following—child custody, parent or guardian dependent upon student for direct support/care, and treatment of a serious personal medical condition that would be compromised by living in a different city.
As many as four waiting lists may be maintained—one master alternate list of rank-ordered applicants who have not yet been offered admission and the campus-pending lists for Salina, Wichita, and Kansas City/Wichita. While retaining their positions on the master alternate list, alternates on the master alternate list may also be added to their first-preference campus-pending lists.
When a seat becomes available, the first person on the pending list for that campus will be offered the position. If declined, the offer will be made to the next person on that campus-pending list, and so on until the seat is filled. Priority for assignment to preferred campus is given to applicants accepted between September and mid-March.
Previously accepted applicants on a pending list may be offered a seat on that preferred campus if one becomes available prior to seven days before the first day of orientation.
Entering class size for each campus is determined annually by the Executive Dean of the School of Medicine.
