2014-2015 University of Kansas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was in the first batch of interviews. I think it's safe to say I need to get started on the next cycle.

Did you apply to KU alone this cycle, @docksan? Will you seek out an application review to see what you could do to improve your chances for next round?

Yes, I did that last year. I was told I was a great candidate with a great interview but I'm betting as a non-trad my early academic record reflected poorly.

I'm not about to give up.

I love your tenacity and perseverance. I was rooting for you--still am--and was confident you were going to get the acceptance this round, and it sucks that you haven't gotten it yet. If you have to reapply, I'll be tackling 2015-16 with you, man.

Well I'm going to assume I didn't get in since it seems like all the acceptances went out yesterday (even for February) and all the rejections will go out tomorrow or Thursday =/. I'm kinda disappointed that I had to find out indirectly that I didn't get in, instead of KU just letting me know day 1.

If I wasn't having a baby and wasn't a non-traditional student I might just feel inclined to throw in the towel.

In other countries there's no bottleneck. You score a certain level, you can get into school. So, like everything else, I'll do my best to rise above the status quo.

I interviewed February 13th and received my acceptance yesterday. Don't give up hope though! Good luck to you 🙂
I get the feeling that everyone else is a no at this point.

Hard to believe it would take them this long to dole out the yes and wait list candidates, at least at this point.

As I said before: disappointing but not discouraging.

At this point, mentally prepared for a rejection email/mail.

However, still open to the idea of getting pleasantly surprised lol.

Crickets today? Noone at all got any word? I'm still out in the wind. No emails no nothing? Expecting an automated rejection at this point

Still nada here. Post-bacc invitations won't even be for another couple of weeks.

Has anybody gotten their acceptance letter in the mail yet? I'm over here freaking out as if I'm going to miss something lol.

For those of you who have already been accepted prior to March, how do we go about holding our seat? Is there a form or something which arrives with the letter?

Chill out man, if you're already accepted there should be no freaking out necessary.:meh:

We haven't even gotten any rejection email yet let alone an acceptance letter

Typically you get an acceptance package that has the stuff in there to pay your fees.

No need to freak.

It's a letter and there are two forms you sign if I remember correctly to hold your spot. They give you a month to get it back in. No deposit at first

Well, time to study for the 2015. I don't really have time for games.

The envelope I received had the official letter as well as a couple of forms, one of which basically said "I intend to matriculate here." We will be coming up on the deadline for people with multiple acceptances to notify schools if they intend to matriculate. The envelope did not ask us to pay anything yet.

When were you accepted?

Left an email after no return call! I'm sure they love me for flooding their day with a question they've been asked a million times. Once again, if I hear anything at all, I'll update you guys.

It's Match day which is probably one of the busiest days of the year for any medical school. I am in the same boat as you in that I haven't heard a thing from KU yet but I don't really see how any of the stressing that has gone on in this thread this week and now pestering of the admissions office can do anything positive at this point.

You've worked hard, you applied, and got interviewed but now its pretty much out of your hands. I agree it would be nice to have a definitive answer but there's nothing you can do to force that along so why not just relax?

Well said sir. It is what it is. Only time will tell what the verdict is. Good luck everyone.

That's true, but it may also be easier for you to be patient if you were accepted elsewhere! I understand that they're busy hence why I'm not expecting a response. I have another job and am a nontrad; I have a few other factors that require planning in advance which is dependent on whether I get in, am waitlisted, am considered for post-bacc, or flat out rejected. I've based that timing on KU's projection of when they'd send out letters/responses. For me, and most nontrads I presume, it's not really a matter of going to classes and staying busy;. I have to notify my work my plans as well, relocate my family, etc..; long story short, I have other dependants whose lives would be effected.

My current plan of action is structured around someone who hasn't been admitted, but it'd be nice to know I'm not eligible for postbacc or am on the waitlist.

But then again I am a bit anxious😛

I am a non-trad and working a full time job as well, I definitely agree its hard to manage work life while not being sure if you will stay in your job, stay in your state, or up-root entirely to somewhere else. As you say, I was fortunate to get an acceptance early on (Nov). I ended up getting 4 IIs this year and attending 3 of them. I would certainly, however, go to either of the schools I have not heard from if accepted (KU and my own state school) before the one I have been accepted to so I definitely understand the flux of not knowing where you will be a year from now. But as I said there is really nothing we can do (if anything pestering them might harm us) so I advise only worrying about the things you can control and patiently anticipating the results of the things you cannot. Did you apply to any other schools or programs?

Nah, this is the only school that is financially feasible and wouldn't have to move out of the state. I guess I'd feel worse about pestering them, if they stuck to their initial plan of notifying everyone by mail by mid March. I don't fault them because I'm sure there are many variables that I am not aware of, but I shouldn't have to feel like I'm pestering them for wanting an update on process which played out much differently than the one we were informed of. Can I wait a few days? Of course. Is it out of my hands? Yes, very much so. But do I have a justifiable concern? I'd think so and hope there was a bit more transparency since they were adamant about snail mail decision letters with a mid March projection, instead we had acceptance emails sent out mid March and no word otherwise. I'd hope they anticipate questions and concerns about a rather unorthodox process.

What is your state school?

Boo! That sucks bad. Sorry to hear of it @docksan
Don't be. As someone here who is now a med student once told me... It's all a game of politics.

If I want it, I'll work harder to make it happen. If that means going DO instead of MD so be it.

If it means studying for the new convoluted MCAT, so be it.

Where did you hear all acceptances have gone out and rejection letters were sent Wednesday and Thursday, @viva117? Last year, people continued to hear about acceptances until the end of March.

No I apologize, there is definitely still hope but because acceptances were sent out by email, it seemed a bit discouraging if you didn't receive an email.

@docksan! was it a letter via snail mail? Now I feel more nervous than ever because I'm out of town =(. I'm sorry docksan, I was hoping good news for you this year.

Rejections were given via mail. If you didn't get an e-mail, you didn't get in.

Is there still a chance to be waitlisted or is everyone else getting rejected?

The waitlist letters went out with the acceptance letters, my sister has a friend who got #43. On a separate note, my actual letter came today! Woo! I was surprised they don't want a deposit.

Does anyone know about how many alternates end up being called up for admission?

I think on average maybe up to 10. This last year they went up to 40(!). The year before that a friend of mine was number 6 and didn't get in. I remember them saying it's usually around 5-10 though, at least from what I recall (by all means someone correct me if I'm wrong or they told you differently this year!).

Like I said. If you didn't get an e-mail, you are most likely rejected.

Received my rejection letter today, as well. If you did not hear anything from KU, then it's safe to assume you're going to open up a rejection letter. It comes with a yellow paper inside.

The better question is, does a flat out rejection disqualify me from post bacc invite?

Hi all! Congrats to those who were accepted, and best of luck to those still waiting to hear!

Update on Post Bacc,

I spoke with the office that handles the post bacc mailing and they said they haven't received the list of invites yet and should have it next week!

Hopefully, I qualify because I think the main reason I was rejected was my very poor GPA (3.1). I thought had a solid interview, have extensive clinical experience, and a decent 10-10-10 (30)Mcat. ISS

I know in life you don't get many second chances nor am I entitled to one but I'd be totally humbled if KU gave me a second chance. :xf:

Congrats to those of you who were accepted. To everyone else, I was in your shoes two years ago so I have an idea of how it feels. I did the post bacc program and I'm finishing up M1 now. If you have any questions feel free to post them or send me a message. Best wishes everyone

Wow. Not even with a 30?

@docksan, @didymus.

I'm quite a few years out of college, had a "U" shaped trend, and my MCAT is from like 2012 (I took time off to backpack and work). I also had a huge red flag with a terrible grade in physiology.

I was a different person with much much less motivation and drive than I have today. I'm sure there were just a lot more people with better numbers or more well rounded applicants this year.
