2014-2015 University of Kansas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Alright guys, do any of you know how much of a difference it makes regarding your chances doing the EDP versus regular decision? I was planning on applying early and taking the July 17th MCAT (last acceptable date for EDP), however my current tutor strongly advises that I not rush the program that much. But in all honesty, since the rest of my application is very strong, I only need about an average score (at least high 20's low 30's).

Ugh I just don't know what to do! Stresssssss🙁

I know this sounds super lame, but can someone copy and paste the text of the acceptance letter? I want to print it and pin it on my wall to motivate me haha. I already have the rejection letter pinned

In case you guys didn't know, if you didn't get accepted it is possible to meet with Dean McCurdy to gain tips on re-applying.

Found out that my application was "highly impressive" (3.9 GPA, honors, thesis, tons of research in neuroimaging through KU Med, one of my letters of rec from a department head of KU Med, volunteered as a counselor for the NSPL for 3.5 years, etc)...BUT I literally scored ONE point too low on my MCAT to even be considered 🙁

It is what it is, and I understand that this is part of their criterion. Of course I'm not giving up and going to take the MCAT yet again (*cringe*) because that is what needs to be done. But still can't help but to feel a little frustrated and bitter that even the dean agrees I would have had a pretty high chance of getting in if it weren't for that one score.

Just needed to vent I guess? Congratulations to all that got accepted! As for me, it's back to the books...

Yea, I'm a bit skeptical about KU "looking at the WHOLE applicant"

I was definitely told the only reason I didn't get in was my 3.1 GPA. They told me my interviews went very well ("your interviewers thought you were very personable and would make a great doctor who patients could trust", I have extensive clinical experience, had a strong application, and a sturdy MCAT (30).

Maybe I misunderstood them but not even wait-listed.

I'm sorry you weren't able to get in. I would totally let you into my medical school if I was an adcom with those stats!

There are many personable people from my class alone with better stats and EC's who did not get in. MCAT admission scores are getting higher by the year,so a 30 isn't seen as too sturdy these days. I'm sure you'll get it next time though!

I cannot believe it has almost been a year since this thread was created. It doesn't seem like that long, but this application process truly does take about a year to complete. Seems like yesterday I was freaking out about submitting the primary on time..

Your GPA isn't far off from mine and I was told something completely different. Trust me. It's the whole applicant.

Anybody know if we can withdraw from a course and be fine with KU? It's just a pain in the ass and unnecessary for graduation & med school.

Curious as to whether any applicants accepted to multiple schools have decided to go elsewhere (besides KU)?

Not off to a good start already?

It does say "Accepted" under her name so I'm assuming she's off to a pretty decent start.

I would just e-mail Sandy McCurdy about it. Honestly, as long as you don't get a D or F, I don't see why finishing it up this late in the year is a problem...I mean, You've already been accepted.

Anyone know when scholarship information should be coming out? Has anyone received the financial aid/som scholarship e-mail yet?

Thanks guys! And docksan, I'm off to a great start I would probably get a B, but I would rather just enjoy some more personal time with my friends and family before I do start medical school in the fall. Thanks for your concern though.

I got one today too. woo. Won't make much of a dent in loans, might as well just add it to my cost of living 🙂

Yea I got mine too. And you're right, not much, but better than nothing. Instate tuition is already low compared to most schools so hey we're still going to get a solid education for a discount.

Any medical students from KU-Wichita on this thread?

If any of the accepted guys on here need a roommate for next year, hit me up! 1Br's in the area are far more expensive than I would like.

Are you on the Facebook page? Put something up there! I know people are still looking for roommates

average MCAT, average GPA. It can be done.

Don't give up folks.

I got accepted into the post-bacc program as well. I believe orientation is in less than one month. If any post-bacc students are looking for a roommate, feel free to send me a message.

Goodluck to those currently on the waitlist!

Has anyone on the waitlist for the entering class been called yet? I know the letter said "Mid-May" but just wanted to check if they are starting earlier!

I haven't heard anything yet. Hopefully it'll be this week. Good luck!

I was accepted into the post-bacc too! We should start a Facebook group. If you want to privately send me a message with your name, I can start a group for us. 🙂

If anyone else in post bacc this year wants to join and hasn't yet been added let us know via PM.

Log on to the Meds_Online website and see if you have a "pre matriculation" tab. I haven't got a call or anything but the tab is new!
