Once it starts at a particular school it is likely to continue, albeit slowly, until orientation.

I rarely see more than one admit at a time.
If I do, it's likely to be the tip of a much greater number since we don't have that much overlap.
 
@gyngyn in the LOI, is it wise to say "I have been admitted to [specific school name], but I want to attend your school" if that school is either better or in the same par as the school you send the LOI to? Also, have you seen a lot of movements for baylor/ are you predicting more movements? Thank you!

We already know where you have been admitted.
Mentioning the name of the school that was generous enough to have admitted you seems tacky.
I've seen movement at UTSW. Baylor, I can't recall offhand.
 
@gyngyn I sent a LOI May 1st after i withdrew from every school but 1, do you think sending one again would be too much to get off the wait list? Thanksss

Based on your experience, do you think it's likely SLU will continue to have significant WL activity after today? I didn't see any posts of acceptances today, however someone posted today that they were rejected from the waitlist. Thanks!

UCLA PRIME isn't going to move much more if any. I talked to Lawrence "Hy" Doyle (guy in charge) and he told me that and he didn't have anything positive to say about our prospects.

Thanks. I'm accepted to Mercer. I applied EDP to my state school and then late to 13 other schools once I was released from EDP. I only got an interview at Mercer. So yea, not the best cycle for me, but whatever, I'm in!

Im sorry if this has been answered before but how are you able to detect movement? By seeing student which have been accepted by your school receive another acceptance? Im assuming this is shown to you instantly, whereas the applicant may be notified at a later point?

We can see where anyone we interviewed is accepted.
We do not know when the individual is notified if it is a waitlisted candidate.
 
From the JHU Admissions FB Page: We are still using the waiting list, so those of you who are on it need to be a little more patient. If you said yes to being on the waiting list but now know that you wish to attend another school, it would be appropriate to send us an e-mail stating you wish to withdraw from the wait list. This allows us to concentrate on those who really are interested in being here and not those who merely want to collect an acceptance letter but have no intention of coming.

In more ways than one. Schools that rank their waitlists, but don't tell us our ranks, should tell us what third we are in and what are chances of getting accepted are, and those that rank us and tell should be more explicit about our ranks/chances. Telling us our exact positions would be great, but that's probably a total pipe dream, as is everything else in my post.

It's really hard to not be able to communicate with anyone and be unable better idea of our chances at this point when some of us should probably be preparing to sign leases across the country or at least consider it. If we knew our chances realistically, then we'd be able to make an informed decision.

@gyngyn or anyone who has experience with waitlists and the background check service through Certiphi, do schools every initiate these checks with only a waitlist placement, or are the always indicative of an acceptance? I spoke with Certiphi and their parent company today and they can't indicate who initiated the check or why the check was initiated, except that it was through AMCAS service.

Does that mean a couple or more people have been shown to be accepted at UCLA today in your system? Or does that mean a couple or more people already accepted at UCLA have been accepted elsewhere and they withdrew today? Or what?

School policies vary on the timing of the Certiphi check and status of the applicant.

People are being accepted off the waitlist at UCLA.
 
@gyngyn - Does your school have any overlap with UCF (central florida)? If so, have you seen any movement at all recently?

Interesting, I figured it could happen whenever. I've also heard that many school won't waste the time/money to run background check on those they don't plan to accept.

Were you eventually accepted off of that 1 wait list?

The rash of acceptances from UCI in the last month were primary acceptances.
The cycle ended somewhat later than at other schools.

In other words...there's still hope for us fellow waitlisters?? 😀 Bc I read somewhere here that half of the total acceptances given are off the waitlist I think?
 
Hey everyone, new member to this thread. Boy, this thread has had some very informative stuff!

My story: no acceptances last year, this year I interviewed at the University of Utah and the University of Miami. I was wait listed at Utah on March 15th and Miami on April 8. On May 15th Utah told me that I was no longer being "actively considered."

So, 1 wait list spot is the only thing between me and the prospect of applying for round 3. It's scary, as many of you well know. Hopefully there is a little more movement even this late in the game, though I'm planning for the worst and getting ready for reapplication.

It’s curious to me that, in the case of this article, a school like Sinai is (at least in part) throwing traditional standards of admissions to the wind. On multiple occasions I’ve heard that more and more, schools are shifting their focus to a more holistic approach in selecting their applicants with the apparent hope that they will thereby produce more well-rounded doctors who can connect with their patients, etc.

I’m curious as to how this all fits in with the notion that medical school admissions committees are competing for the best applicants. Are the metrics of GPA and MCAT the primary indicators of a good applicant when compared across the board? It seems that showcasing the fact of “our accepted students had X shadowing hours, Y research publications, and Z experiences in volunteering and leadership” really isn’t a metric that you’d go by to compare your school with others. Perhaps I’m wrong though. What standards do you, when comparing with other schools, use to determine a “good applicant”? Or does each school have a different definition of what constitutes a “good applicant” based on that school’s mission, etc.? I suspect that one of an ADCOM's primary goals is to raise it's profile by attracting the best applicants, and it doesn't seem like the intangible, "holistic" characteristics lend themselves to raising a school's profile. Perhaps I am wrong.

Without have much understanding about these things, it’s a bit more difficult for me to form an educated question about the aforementioned article, but I’ll attempt one all the same. What is the relationship between the holistic “we want students who are people” approach and the “we want students who look good on paper”?

I realize that I’ve asked a lot of questions here, and I realize that it's a bit all over the place. Perhaps an ensuing dialogue will refine my understanding and thereby will better inform my questions. Thanks for all of your guidance to us so far, it is very appreciated by a large body of pre-med students dwelling in a realm of uncertainty and apprehension.

Good luck man, hope it works out, I have heard of people getting in right up to orientation for many schools so there is still a possibility!
