2015-2016 Yale University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I truly don't think Mr. Silverman/the admissions office would have said group 3 is the largest without that being the case. I trust that everyone is being honest throughout this process. I know in threads from a few years ago, one or two people did self-identify as group 3. It's important to remember that SDN is a very small subset of applicants and is also probably fairly self-selecting both in membership and in who decides to post. Individuals who are in group 3 and are active on SDN may just not have posted that particular piece of information for various reasons.

As avgn suggested, given that group 2 was only reached in the last week or two, it's probably not looking awesome for group 3 this year.
oh i wasn't suggesting that they were lying, more like thinking about why we hadn't heard from more people. Makes sense though.

6-10 deferrals expected, which is the standard amount. Deadline to defer is June 30th so movement should happen by then. They are done with tier 1 and moving into tier 2. They were pretty vague about my specific chances, but extremely gracious. It is so kind of then to hold these calling in hours.

Can you tell me when and where you got the 6-10 defferals expected? I received a range of 4-8.

Silverman himself. He said 5 definitely deferring and possibly up to double digits. He also said that surprises tend to happen, both for the better and worse.

Does Yale med have student housing, or does everyone live off post?

We have dorms. They in the floors above the admissions office where everyone interviewed so next door to the medical school. Many live there first year and move out afterwards. If you get off the waitlist at this point, you'll pretty much be restricted to the dorms since the apts close to campus will be all leased out by then. I'm pretty sure they're basically all gone by now based on what I heard when I was looking last month.

Was anyone able to get through today? If so, could you let us know what was said? I can't call from work. Thank you!

Hey everyone, I just tried to get through for the last 40 minutes and couldn't so looks like it's not in the cards for me today. If anyone else manages to get through, I'm sure we'd all appreciate an update on what was said!

So, I didn't get through but I heard from someone who did and they said that it seems like there will be less movement than expected this year :/. I'm guessing that means the 6-10 estimate was high. Either way, crossing my fingers for all of us!

Hmmmm could you possibly get a number range from this source?

Please post updates if you have them! It's so hard to make it through so I'm sure we would all appreciate it.

If anyone manages to get through this morning, please let us know if there have been any changes or movement (e.g. are the deferrals still un-processed? are they still expected by June 30th?). I am trying to get through right now (early I know...) but I only have so much time before I have to be at work.

Just got off the phone with him! He said that all of those possible deferrals are not going to materialize. Everyone has paid their deposit to the school, withdrew other acceptances, and has given Yale their white coat measurements. Apparently this week Yale students were offered positions to other schools (off of their respective waitlists) and all of the students declined the offers. Silverman said that he'll send an email out later today canceling the calling hours. I hate to say it guys, but I think it's over...

soooo 6-10 to 4-5 to...none...? That sounds pretty depressing.

He said that he was working with the 5-6 expected deferrals but they ALL decided to start this year. I'm still crossing my fingers for a miracle!

I spoke with him a week or two ago and was told that "at least 4 students" are "definitely deferring", so can't really help but feeling a bit deceived (multiple posters in previous years' threads have reported being given similar misinformation by Yale).

4+ people had decided to defer weeks (months?) ago and just had some paperwork to do before it's official, then over the course of a few days they all simultaneously change their minds? Awful tough to believe.

I was able to speak with him today, and honestly he seemed as surprised about the outcome as we all are!

Also, just want to remind everyone that no matter where you end up, it's going to be great and you're going to be great. I know Yale's system is unique and seems like a dream to many of us, but every school has its own culture and Yale's isn't necessarily the best or even the best for you. It might be a wonderful option for you, but so might another school too -- especially in ways that you never could have anticipated!

Don't give up guys. Beleive you'll make it. It's not over till the Silverman sings.
