2016 PHAP (Public Health Associate Program) application - General discussion thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm still waiting.. 🙁
Has anyone that lives in the southeastern part of the country received an offer yet?

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully, we get calls/emails within the next week or so. I am so nervous. I thought my interview went well. Now I am second guessing myself and like the girl stating earlier - I can't concentrate on my work for checking emails and the volume on my phone to make sure it works LOL! But if anyone who had a preference for the South hears something, please share!

Furthermore, congratulations to those already accepted. This opportunity will definitely open more doors for you.

I also just got an offer in Richmond, VA! Are you accepting? It's my second time being offered a place in the program so I'm highly considering it. I just know nothing about Richmond, so it's a big decision! I would be coming from Philadelphia, PA.

Also, did anyone else with an offer NOT receive a phone call? It was strange because I knew offers had been rolling out and just happened to see an email notification on my phone yesterday afternoon.... But no phone call. Oh well!
That's awesome! Yes! I am totally accepting, this is an opportunity that I will definitely not pass up. I understand the anxiety about making such a huge commitment. Coming from CO I imagine life on the east coast will be different but I am excited for the challenge. Please let me know if you decide to accept the offer, I would love to connect with a fellow Richmond Associate

Does anyone know if people are being accepted by region? I noticed that most of the people accepted are east coast?

It looks like most people accepted might be from the west coast but who really knows?? lol🙂
Past years have tried to solve this question... Pretty certain it's never been figured out.

If I had to bet, I'd say it's random or based on ranking of applicants.

I actually just thought about that aspect as well...thanks for the input!

Hi 2016 Hopefuls!

Current 2015 (Richmond, VA) here with a few words of advice: Stop refreshing the emails and put the phone down! You'll drive yourself nuts like I did :poke: ! I didn't get a call until September (yes a month before the program started)! Also if anyone wants any insight into the program and the onboarding process feel free to message me.

Good Luck!😉

To former and current public health associates: Is it possible to go to graduate school while completing the program? Maybe get an MPH while doing the program? Has this been done before? Does the CDC program discourage this?
I know I'm late, but I'm just catching up. I am a current PHAP of the 2015 class and I am attending graduate school online. In my opinion, it's manageable, but it's your personal preference and it depends on how well you manage your time. CDC actually encourages furthering your education. There are others who are in the program and attending grad school as well. (some even have 2nd jobs) hope this helps 🙂

Just got the call. I got placed in New Orleans....ahhhh!! Soooo much to consider, but this is exciting. Congratulations to everyone.
Congratulations!!! Hope to see you soon!! I am a 2015 PHAP currently in NOLA. Please feel free to PM me for any assistance or questions 🙂

Hello everyone! Congratulations to everyone who has made it this far- we have so much to be proud of!
I'm from Florida and just accepted a position in Sarasota, FL. I did not receive a phone call, but did receive an email. Anyone understanding the onboarding process? Thanks so much! Really excited to meet you all and very thankful for this forum.

Hi all. Congratulations to all who have made it to the interview process and good luck to those still waiting to hear back. Does anyone have any idea about life after the PHAP program especially in terms of future prospects of employment with CDC perhaps as PHA? I've an MPH and a few years of PH work experience and I'm kind of G5 salary is way too low! Please advise. Thank you.
Bariyow.

Hi,
2015 PHAP here. After 2 years of PHAP, you can transition to a federal job at the GS-9 level, but nothing is guaranteed. Just depends what openings there are the year that you finish. As an aside, if you have an MPH and a few years of experience, you may be better off skipping PHAP altogether -- the salary is way below what you could get elsewhere and a lot of the trainings, advice etc. are geared toward those with a bachelor's. I know many of the MPH's in my class are pretty frustrated with the program. Just my two cents.

Hello and congrats on your offer! I'll be in st Petersburg. I just signed up for the on boarding site and started filling out the paperwork. My email said one of the forms is due by Thursday so I filled it out on the site and submitted it that way.

RIP PHPS... It just wasn't the right move to merge it with PHAP.

I don't see instructions on how to sign up from my email. Is there something I am missing?

Your HR Rep will send you a link within (I believe) 24-48hours after you have told them you've accepted the position.

2014 PHAP here- did anyone get offered Baltimore? Please let me know- we want to find out who we are getting at our host site and we are so excited!

My guess is random.

In theory, a ranking would work, but then they go through a process of matching PHAP to host site based on needs, abilities, site requirements (requiring an advanced degree or a specific field), etc which would probably screw up any ranking they do.

More than that, though, is that there are several HR folks that are sending out calls and emails. I can't see a way that they are going out in order if they've been split out into several different people's hands.

Congrats! You are the county north of my host site! I will see if I can't dig up someone to link you to in the area!

And how. I will echo the other person. I've got my MPH and the program can be awfully frustrating. I just look at it as more stuff on the resume and buckle down and do it!

Has anyone gotten an offer today? Or heard anything? Is there anyway to find out faster? 😉

Hey! I haven't received an offer yet, but I have my MPH and I would love to know a bit more about why the program is frustrating for you. Is it the pay scale or is the program limited in other areas like opportunities to work on projects or the work in general? I'm still applying for other positions because my classes end in a couple weeks, but if this is offered to me I would like to make an informed decision.

Yes, I was wondering about this as well.

Now I'm worried about the MPH program dynamic. I am in Chicago where I feel like I can't find much without having experience. I don't have any in public health but some in healthcare. Where have you guys been finding alternative job opportunities. I really want to wait it out with PHAP.

I live in NYC and that is mostly where I've been applying. I don't have a lot of experience either but I have done a couple internships. I concentrated in global health, so i've been looking into jobs with that kind of work. If you're having an issue doing a broad sweep for jobs I would suggest looking into individual companies/organizations and non-profits, and finding their listed affiliates to branch out your search. I understand wanting to wait it out, I still think it could be a great opportunity and I hope I get an offer.

I have my MPH also and I'm Currently working as a Health Educator!!!! I'm still waiting on a offer from PHAP but I did apply straight through to the CDC for. Public Health Analyst in regards to the Zika virus and got a call about that position so fingers cross! So I would be Excited if I got that or the PHAP doesn't matter which one as long as I get in with the PHAP!!! I however do want to get my DRPHD in the future

Just accepted my offer to work in Richmond, VA! Thanks to all who have been helpful to people like me on this forum and who continue to be helpful to those waiting for acceptances or who already received offers. It's an exciting but stressful time for many of us!

If you'll be in Richmond starting this fall, message me and we can exchange contact info! 🙂

Just got an offer! Phoenix, AZ! Phone call. Will be receiving a follow up email.

Hello! Again, congratulations to all who have received offers and good luck to those who are still waiting! I was wondering if in the PHAP application do they give you location/geographical preferences? If so, how many? Are you allowed to choose locations that are near you?

As far as the MPH PHAP experience: There used to be two separate programs, PHAP and PHPS. The first was geared towards an internship/bachelor's degree model, and the PHPS was geared more towards master's degree holders with some experience. It was designed as a way to learn public health program planning, implementation, and evaluation. This started prior to the phenomenon of people going straight from bachelor's to their MPH as a starting point, so that program was all geared to expand your knowledge and mentor you into a leadership position.

In 2013, CDC merged the two programs. Dr. Frieden wanted the PHAP classes up to 200 and the easiest way to expand the program was to remove the requirement for experience and move everything under the Pathways recent graduate authority. So, now, PHAP still is the entry level, but now the eligibility has expanded.

There are two big problems with this: First, the program is geared towards trying to convince people who were thinking of med school or something else that Public Health is a great field and they should pursue that instead. That's a perfectly legitimate goal - but I just dropped 40 grand on a master's degree, I KNOW already what I want to do.

The other problem is that much of the programming, online training, webinars, etc. is geared towards someone who is coming out of a bachelor's degree with no real-world work experience at a professional level. Things like how to politely send emails, how to dress for an office, how to interact with your supervisor, how to listen - lessons that I already learned. Don't get me wrong, these are very valuable lessons, but I am 35 years old and came into public health very late and much of it, when it's not wasting my time, is talking down to me (as a perception, not necessarily in reality). But I knew this when I came in, too, so I just roll with it.

The real benefit of this program is to get you hands-on experience at a local, front-line level. I have 8 years as a firefighter/EMT, another couple as a life safety inspector, and then 5 as substance abuse educator (with a couple years of killing bed bugs thrown in there). I don't have any public health experience, though, except on the periphery, so the opportunity to get a paycheck (such as it is this first year), add a couple years of good experience and get to put CDC on my resume was a no-brainer, even knowing that I'd be an old man in the program comparatively.

I went to East Carolina for my MPH and knew I wasn't going to be sticking around the area after I got done so I did my internship somewhere where it wasn't going to lead to a job (although one was offered it turns out). I didn't think I was going to have the science chops or connections to land a job quickly, and if I did, I'd be jumping in at a bottom rung somewhere and would be taking it just to get a job. Actually, that happened, I took a contract position in Atlanta, left my wife in Greenville, NC, and had moved away for 6 months with no promise of anything past that. So 2 years of work guaranteed with the premier public health agency in the world sounded great. If you have a different experience, better contacts, more promising job options in a field and region you would be happy for, then this program may not be a good idea.

The big thing is this: remember that this program is, just like a master's degree or anything else in life, WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT. I ended up getting assigned to Quality Improvement my first year and hate it, and didn't want to do that and don't think it's actually public health - but you know what? It is certainly helping me learn how to run a health department, and I'm pretty good at it and have become a valuable resource to my colleagues. I also am in Chronic Disease (they screwed up the host site application)...I went and got my MPH to do infectious diseases, particularly nasty arboviruses, and have zero interest in that part of the field, but it's helped me learn program planning and delivery. More to the point though is that I've advocated for as much training as I can get my grubby hands on to keep my skills up and expand my marketability, and I've deliberately volunteered for any assignment I can get my hands on (particularly when it's in our Disease Control, Prevention, and Preparedness department).
Heck, last week I spent all week getting a national certification as a Child Passenger Safety Technician and learning about car seats. Do I care much? No, but by golly that will look good on a resume, will help you help your community, and will further round you out as a candidate for later opportunities.

PHAPs are there to expand the capacity of local and state health departments, and to me, that means picking up the slack wherever I see it. If you show up, learn quickly, show your worth, and appear hungry most host sites will feed you what you want, give you what you need. Go in demurely but confident and make these two years YOURS, whether you're fresh out of your bachelor's or you're coming into this with experience. This program will be as good as you make it.

Some tactical advice, too, for those who aren't sure. If you get an offer, go ahead and accept it...doesn't mean you have to stop looking. We had people drop pretty near the start date because something better came up, be it med school or some much higher paying job. I was gung-ho for it, so I worked out half of my contract as a temp and moved to Florida without a second thought.

For you MPHers, I can only say this (after I said all that earlier, anyway): This was a good decision for me. It could be for you, too, but YMMV - if you go into it, it is much less frustrating when you know what to expect. I think that many of the people who are disgruntled as MPH thought it was going to be something other than entry level.

Oh, and final pet peeve - Never...NEVER let someone call you the "intern," and never act like you are. Nobody is necessarily better than you just because they've worked there longer, have more letters tacked onto the end of their name, or are in charge of something. Go in, do your thing, introduce yourself as a CDC Associate (I also use CDC Field Assignee). Trust me, it will help your image more, and more quickly, than pretty much anything else you will ever do at your host site.

Ok, /end rants

Thank you so much for your honestly. One of the questions I actually asked on my interview was if they try to match candidates to particular fields of interest or expertise (they don't, obviously) Because I studied global health and have been involved with neglected tropical diseases. Your tactical point is what I had in mind as well, but you're right...it is what you make of it. I'm glad that you have been able to make the program work for you and gain valuable skill sets through it. Thank you again! I think this will really help everyone that has been questioning if this is the right path for them 🙂

Hi everyone! I got a phone call then an email right after.

I'll be in Albuquerque New Mexico in the Tribal and Territorial Support (OSTLTS).

Is there anyone who will be located in this area? I am actually very nervous and extremely excited!

Can someone please help me network? I am not familiar with my area so I was wondering does anyone know a good place to look into apartments? Any advice? What to expect? I got the memo that orientation might be over Skype this year. Any information to prepare for this all will be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Congratulations! I'm one of the 2015 PHAPs in ABQ. Btw, all PHAPs are OSTLTS lol. You should be getting your specific host site assignment soon. There are currently 3 of us in ABQ (two 2015s and one 2014) and 2 in Santa Fe (one 2015 and one 2014). Depending on where you are coming from, it's DEFINITELY different and will take a little time to adjust in different ways. I'm from the mid-Atlantic region...it's waaaayyyyyy different lol.

Don't be too nervous. In my short time here, it looks like the NE part of town or West of the Rio Grande are the best places to look for apartments. Let me know if you have any more specific questions. 🙂

Hello all! I'm a current first year PHAP stationed in New York City (in Queens). When the offers for NYC start coming in, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions! About the city, moving here, the host site, etc etc. I'm so excited for all of you.

P.S. patience is the name of the game right now .. the offers will slowly trickle in, so don't get too anxious if other people are getting offers and you are still waiting!

Good news to those of you who are still waiting to hear back: I just declined an offer to be placed in the Cleveland Department of Public Health, so that spot will be up for grabs when they start working out round 2 of selections!

It was a tough one to turn down. I absolutely LOVE Cleveland, but I got a job during the waiting period doing something I am loving even more.

Also, if the future Cleveland PHAP sees this: get in touch! I live right next door in Akron so I would love to get in touch so I can be a friendly face in the area!

Hi there! I am absolutely grateful you messaged me! Would you mind switching emails that way I can communicate with you better? My email is [email protected]. I was told that I would be at the Indian Health Board Inc. Also are there specific apartments you would suggest? Where I can research online? It's literally my first time leaving home so I am nervous but extremely excited for this opportunity. Any help will be great help. Also I am coming from California. =)

Thank you so much,
You can not imagine how much I appreciate every word of your post. I still think PHAP is good for me because I have a MPH but no public health experience. I can be way more patient since I have advanced notice of the dynamics.

Auctoritas: Thank you so much for taking the time to document your experience and share it with us. It will help us make a more informed decision. Best wishes on your future endeavors!

Anyone else still struggling on not checking your email/phone every hour?

I have become obsessed with having my phone near and refreshing my email. Part of me wishes I never saw that offers were coming but then another part of me is glad that they are. I am so anxious! I really, really want this 🙂

Did you just receive phone call or email
I got an email on Monday evening, and they gave me until today to accept. No phone call (last year I got a phone call and then received an email with details, so maybe it just depends).

You get to rank regions, but those can be fairly large. Both the past two years I applied I have listed Region 1 as my preference and have been offered a placement in that region (just not in Philadelphia, PA, where I'm currently located). Last year I was offered Baltimore, MD, and turned it down, but I just accepted my Richmond, VA, placement. I think they try to honor region preferences but just can't guarantee exact locations. I didn't want to move but couldn't pass up this opportunity.

I can confirm that they are trying to honor regional preferences very strongly. They were not so thoughtful in the past and it really hurt both the acceptance rate and the program completion rates.

But, as smac said...regions are big places sometimes. Particularly the Southeast region.

For anyone who has accepted and begun the paperwork: how long did it take to receive that? I replied to my offer with my name and sent my transcript as requested, but I haven't received anything else yet. I only just did those things yesterday afternoon, so I'm probably being paranoid about not having heard back anything else from my HR recruiter. But reassurance is always nice!

It took me about 36hrs to get the link with the on boarding info 🙂
