2017-2018 University of Washington

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dear XXXXXXX,

Thank you for applying to the University of Washington School of Medicine. We have received your preliminary application from AMCAS, and in the near future your file will undergo a preliminary review.

If you have signed up to take a later MCAT exam (administered before the September 30th cutoff date), please make sure that your next test date is indicated in AMCAS. If you indicated a new test date in AMCAS after you received this email (but before you received a decision), please let our office know ASAP so that we can postpone the preliminary review until those test scores have been received.

You will be notified as soon as possible if you are selected to submit secondary application materials. All secondary application materials are due in our office by December 1, 2017.

Did anyone else receive this email on 7/5/17 but not hear back? What does this mean? I'm OOS but have not been instructed to write anything, so far as I can tell.

I'm OOS and was verified June 1st. I never got the above e-mail, just a 07/05/2017 e-mail asking for a "Mission Statement Request."

I guess it means you're still under consideration until they decide on the first batch of secondaries?

Anyone out of the region make it through to the secondary? How long did it take them to respond?
I'm OOR and just got the secondary today (7/14). I submitted the mission statement supplement on the 6th (7/6) and the email said it would take them up to three weeks.

In-region, received secondary yesterday (7/13) and submitted AMCAS primary on 6/1!

OOS, primary verified 6/23, UW prelimin completed 7/6, UW mstp secondary received & submitted 7/10

Same I'm OOS and I got the same email that day and I still haven't heard anything back either so don't know if I should be concerned right now

What are MSTPers doing for the autobiographical statement? Between my personal statement and the preliminary personal comments section, I feel like I've already given them an autobiography...

Submitted preliminary on July 11th, so following some of the other posters timelines hopefully I should have an answer tomorrow or Wednesday.

OOS (New England), got notice I would not be receiving a secondary today. I submitted the pre-secondary on 7/6.

Edit: more info - URM, LizzyM of ~74.

Edit: Totally read this wrong... Sorry, I did not have my glasses on 🙁 Best of luck with the rest of your apps!

Still radio silence since the first "we have your application and haven't looked at it yet" email on 7/5... not sure what to make of that, since others have already been rejected.
+1. I'm assuming I've been tossed on a "reject once we're sure there's enough other qualified candidates" pile, but who knows? Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised.

Anyone submit a mission statement prelim and still not hear back? I've received neither a secondary or rejection

yeah, submitted mine a week ago. Maybe we have been put in the "maybe" pile X)

Will not receive secondary. Notified today.

LizzyM 78, Nature publication. Good luck all!

Why the heck would they not send you a secondary, woah

Their school mission is aimed more towards community service, which I completely respect. It's hard enough for most OOR applicants to receive a secondary/acceptance. All love tho.

Well, you'll clearly get into a different top institution. Good luck!

Well maybe I'll just save myself the trouble on the preliminary essay and not worry about it... ha ha.

No No, Go for it! There is one thing I was told about admissions cycle, you never know until you try. Seriously... All it takes is one adcom to enjoy your story. That is all. Good luck

I can't emphasize this enough. I've been told the same by multiple mentors. Even if the OOS acceptance rate is low. You never know. Then again, you have to keep an eye on finances and your sanity. But if you already applied, you have nothing to lose but your self esteem.

Well, first official rejection of this cycle. Hopefully my Texas schools show me some love!

Those who are providing their status and who are OOR, please always indicate if you are applying MSTP because it doesnt matter if you're OOR for that.

Nothing still ever since submission of mission statement. Better than rejection at this point though

Same. Prelim sent on 07/13. It took early posters a little more than a week to get their secondaries. I figure it would take ~two weeks now. Plus, it seems like they actually read the mission statement and review your app.

+1 submitted 7/11

In the same boat as you guys (OOR w silence) but I'm going to be in Seattle during their early interview season.. (end of August/beginning of September). is it worth mentioning to someone when I haven't even gotten a secondary? could save a $$$ flight tho

OOR - still silence after the "we have received your application and will get to it eventually" email on 7/5. Not MSTP since people seem to care about that.
So wait, you didn't get the mission statement email? That is weird.. I never even received the "we received your application" email. Maybe call or email them?

No mission statement email and no rejection. I'll give it some more time since it is still early, but if I don't hear back in a reasonable amount of time I will definitely contact them.
If I were you I would wait like 2-3 more days. It is almost the end of the month and I feel you have waited enough, especially considering that I don't believe UW screens.

I can't answer the strong ties to the state question, but here are the acceptance stats for out of region:
Acceptance Statistics | UW Medicine
Roughly a 0.4% chance.

That being said, the secondary is one of the cheapest out there. And you have an opportunity to mention your ties to the state in the secondary.

For the MD applicant, the chances are even worse since that .4% includes the MSTP applicants which are probably the majority of those OOR that were interviewed.

Same position haven't heard anything back since the e-mail on 7/5 I think I'll contact them in a few days too.

You won't be there during their interview season. Their first interviews aren't held until October at the Seattle campus.

Just scroll down to the interview schedule part and you can see when each state and site does their interviews, even for TRUST interviews.

OOR Rejection post-mission statement and pre-secondary. Good luck to all other applicants!

Are all OOR applicants first asked to fill out a mission statement before receiving the secondary? I still haven't received anything since that first email saying they received my app

Just received my pre-secondary. Gonna write and submit it this weekend. Here's hoping.

Does anybody know if they use a weighted GPA or just the raw AMCAS calculated GPA?
