Good luck to everyone applying!

Interview Feedback: University of Nevada School of Medicine

Does anyone know if OOS students have any chance here? My aunt/uncle who I am very close with live in Reno but i'm unsure if this is enough to even be considered since their OOS applicant guidelines are so strict. I guess I'm wondering if its even worth contacting admissions over!

Questions are:

The State of Nevada faces a challenge in meeting the medical needs of some patients from diverse backgrounds; such as non-English speaking patients, patients from different races or ethnicities, or patients from the LGBTQ community. Please briefly describe the disparity being faced by one of these groups and respond to the following:
1. How would you personally contribute to meeting challenges in serving patients from diverse backgrounds?
2. How could you contribute to institutional efforts to alleviate these health disparities?
(350 words or less)

Is this a reapplication to the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine?

Please list only experiences not already included on your AMCAS application.
Indicate any paid or volunteer work experience, activities, or duties and the amount of time spent which you feel to be relevant to the study of medicine (NOTE: Include dates and hours).
Have you had any practical experience in laboratory or medical research?

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

OOS chances aren't the best. They only accept about 10% of their class from OOS. But I'm an OOS student myself so it does happen, it just may not be as high yield for OOS students as some other schools. With that said, having ties to the area always helps, especially family ones. Also don't be alarmed if you don't receive a secondary for a long time from them, I think secondaries for OOS come out super late; I got mine around October/November

Got my secondary today. Just a heads up to anyone applying- you must submit the secondary within 5 days of the email, or your application will be considered incomplete and they won't review it.

So... are we supposed to receive a confirmation email after submitting the secondary? I have green check marks next to everything in the portal

Question, did y'all get clinical letters from a doctor?

Most of my hours were under a clinical/recreational therapist (I'm not sure what his exact degree is, but he both works for the hospital and has a private practice). I emailed Pat & she said it was fine but to include one from an MD too?

The few other schools that wanted a clinical letter are perfectly happy with the therapist's letter... the only doctor letter I have is a DO one that specifies "osteopathic physician" loud and clear multiple times and doesn't reference much about patient contact. Kinda leaning towards not even submitting the secondary because of this :/

I wouldn't worry about the letter too much as long as they write you a quality one. Go with whoever you believe can write the most strongly about your clinical and patient experiences. My clinical letter of rec came from a physical therapist and I managed to get in last cycle.

For anyone else who has already submitted-- did it take them a few days to download your LORs? I checked the box next to mine and submitted two days ago, but I haven't gotten a green check mark yet. Just want to make sure I don't need to call about this

Got an II here today. But wondering if anyone has issues with the interview portal? The only available date showing up is Aug 31, and all other dates up to 2019 are unavailable too.

Congrats! I also only had one date option, so I think you just need to go with it if you can 🙂

Yeah I just took it. Now I literally only have ~2 weeks to prepare 😱. It was just strange to see one available date and was wondering if it was real lol.

Got an II earlier today for the Sept 4th/5th interview. When do we find out which group we're in for interview day? How are we supposed to set up travel around this? I've already had to call work in a frenzy to request those two days off, so if I'm spending another day in Nevada work's not going to be happy with me. D:

I haven't heard anything since submitting my primary on the 6th. IS

That's strange. Did you get a secondary? IS as well but I was verified and added UNR on 8/9. Got secondary within a few days and II couple days after I submitted that. I say just wait it out. They're probably just sorting apps.

Does anyone know if the psych requirement can be filled with another class? Something humanities-based? Also, if I needed to take psych (which I would) and have already graduated and submitted transcripts to AMCAS, would I be able to update this coursework later? As in, could I take the class this winter to fill the requirement?

I highly recommend emailing Patricia, who is the admissions coordinator. I've contacted her a couple of times with questions and she's extremely helpful. You can find her email on their website.

Anyone (current student or someone who has already interviewed there) have a recommendation for where to stay? They mentioned hotels in the email and a shuttle to campus? Just wondering if that's the best option, or if I should go with AirBnB and Uber to campus

I live here, but already interviewed, I would think the GSR (Grand Sierra Resort) would be one of the easier places to stay and get to campus from. It probably is a 5 minute drive to campus from GSR if you're not traveling during rush-hour times and 10-ish minutes from the airport. Would you need nights on week-nights only? If so I am pretty sure it fairly cheap if there isn't anything in town that week/weekend. You can PM me (have never used that on SDN before, though) if you have other questions.

Rejected today. First R of the cycle. Not too bummed since I was an OOS applicant. Good luck to the rest of you!

Interviewing this week and have a couple of questions. I'll call tomorrow but thought I'd try here first.
Is there a place to put my luggage, since I'll leave for the airport right after?
I'm in the first MMI group, which says the wrap-up will be complete at 10:30am. Any word on if this is true? I have a flight out of Reno scheduled for 2pm.
How casual is the Welcome Day, as far as what people wear to that?

Did you have any ties or were in one of the OOS regions?

Idk if my family ties are enough to avoid auto-reject

Question for those who have interviewed! Just want to make sure I have the information right, since it was never in writing.
I believe they said that we could send an update letter after our interview, as long as it was before November 1st. Is that correct?
Are any of you sending an update, or have you already? Did you just write an email, or did you save a letter as a pdf or something and attach it to the email?
Thanks!
