You know, for med schools and the AAMC to be so adamant about professionalism, this whole process seems like a joke. No transparency, lack of clear instructions, stringing applicants out to the very last minute. And all we can do is be "patient." They know we are desperate and will put up with it. Smh

We’re the guinea pigs that got screwed over I guess. Kinda salty that as many as a third of accepted applicants are ignoring this process bc there’s no enforcement. In other news the admissions timeline for my school seems to have changed for next year requiring a PTE by mid February and CTE by April 30.

A lot of this is cyclical. If a school allows someone to hold their acceptance without PTE after 4/30 then the person has a higher chance of going there because they have more time to decide. So this then prompts other schools to not require it as well.

I honestly wonder how many people are holding on to more than one acceptance right now.

If applicants aren’t using the “choose your medical school tool” and if some schools aren’t enforcing a clear policy for their accepted applicants then that means this cycle will drag on longer for waitlisted applicants.

Well if true, that makes me feel less cruddy about not being pulled off this last week lol

Typically how many students med schools keep in waitlist?

Got my first acceptance off a high priority waitlist this Friday!! Could not be more excited, honestly didn't process it for a couple hours because I've been waiting for that call for so long!
Congrats that’s such great news! Do you mind saying what school ?cause one of mine also has a high priority waitlist

My school has taken forever to post grades....I ended up with a 4.0 this past semester, and I have been eager/frustrated trying to get them up/not being able to do so yet. Waiting for Tuesday is going to be hard, I hope they're up tomorrow

I can't see much...and there hasn't apparently been much movement.

Hi Gyngyn, would you speculate that this is due to higher yield, or schools being more conservative with acceptances (inb4 "both")? Or even if schools really are dragging out acceptances as compared to last year.

If you've talked to adcoms at other schools, can you comment on whether schools really are waiting longer/are more slowly releasing acceptances compared to last year? I haven't really been keeping track, but it seems like at least before April 30th movement has been pretty similar.

PTE doesn't open until 4/1 and CTE doesn't open until the 4/30--and this policy would more or less prohibit any applicants from staying on any waitlists. I think something has gotten lost in translation here.

iirc, gyngyn is an adcom at a top school so his experience isn’t representative of every school...

Oh those were two unrelated points. The problem is that the April 30th deadline isn’t enforced and there are for sure people holding multiple As at this point. It’s just frustrating having to wait until the CTE deadline for the school I’m on waitlist at

Given that that schools under-accepted this year (in an abundance of caution), the explanation is: we still can't make an educated guess who is coming!

@gyngyn I know you can't answer on behalf of other schools but does the average school accept only up to class size by end of interviews, or say april 30th, or do they accept more? in other words, does every withdraw right now lead to a vacancy or could there be a surplus of accepted applicants at a given school?

@gyngyn I've had this question for so long and I can't find an answer. School I’m waiting on overfilled the class and is slowly getting down to class size to potentially draw from waitlist, you know, if it ever drops below lol

Hypothetically how bad of an idea would it be to send my 1 waitlist school an email saying "hey I really want to go here but I also gotta prepare for unexpected gap year 2: electric boogaloo if it comes to that and I want to know how likely that is to happen, so how many spots are left and how many people are competing for them?" Or something like that. Theoretically their waitlist is already ranked (they don't tell us the ranks though lol) so it shouldn't hurt but OTOH I feel like it could still be risky to annoy admissions, idk...

I personally would not send that email. A lot of people are in the same position as you and I think they understand that and would tell you something along the lines of thank you for your patience, they are unable to provide you with that information, and they are doing their best.

I know some people have called schools just to ask how much waitlist movement they’re expecting. Different schools give different levels of details but it’s worth a shot Maybe calling would be a less risky way

They usually accept at least twice the number needed to fill.

@gyngyn
Wake already started pulling from the waitlist... considering they only offer few interviews to begin with would you say that I have a decent shot at getting pulled off?

I’ve also heard that they over accept... Maybe that’s why there’s nothing but silence on the school specific thread I’m constantly checking

by 4/30. This may be different at smaller state publics with a single medical school.
I’ve been told that while schools usually accept double by 4/30 it might be different this year. Is that true? There’s a solid chance that person was just trying to make me feel better

Aren't most schools going to try to give out less offers per seat this year? If they normally give out 2-3 maybe with the new rules they're giving out 1-2? That way they can just pull from the waitlist. At least that's what I'm really, really hoping for.

i mean ive heard multiple people say schools were waitlisting more this year and accepting less outright due to the rules. it depends on the school yes but im sure many will deal with the rules this way. its pretty apparent from some threads that schools like albany did not accept as many people as they used to before 4/30. just have to keep waiting i guess

Wondering if anyone is in a similar situation here...currently accepted at a school starting in July. On waitlists at two other schools that start later this summer. How long can I realistically give these other schools before having to withdrawal and just go to the school I'm accepted to? Really would like to wait as long as possible but I'm also tired to being strung along and not being able to make moving/living plans.

How far is the A from where you live?

I’m in the same position. Neither school is within driving distance to where I live so I will need to commit to housing at some point. My school that starts in July requires our semester be paid by June 15th, which I think realistically requires me to start the loan application process by early June. As of right now, I’m trying to be patient and wait it out for the program that starts in August, but come early June, I am going to need to start planning for the July program.

lmao being on albany's waitlist (my only waitlist at all in fact) you have no idea how grateful I am to hear you say that, hopefully you are right xD

i was trying to butter your biscuit meridian! jk i am on that waitlist too and it does look like they are treating this year differently. i have a feeling there will be more movement this week. i was like you last year with one interview except i got rejected and was devastated so i feel your anxiety about having one chance.

i currently have a DO acceptance but im on 3 MD waitlists, 1 DO waitlist and waiting on one more MD decision. really hoping i get into one of the MD's. its been a long time coming. the wait has been brutal.
