2020-2021 Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do schools release all their WL offers during the first week of movement? Or does it trickle in? My school had 3 days last week and nothing today so I’m not sure what that means
That means they had 3 days last week and nothing today. 🙂

Seriously, please try to relax and stop torturing yourself. WL offers occur exactly as you might imagine they would.

A first wave based on people dropping excess As ahead of the 4/30 deadline. New As come with a new deadline. Some people will grab the As because it's their only one. Other will drop it and keep what they have. Still others will grab it and drop an A at another school.

All the dropped As will lead to another wave, which will be smaller than the first, because some people receiving As didn't have one before and won't be dropping anything. Wash, rinse and repeat until orientation, all over the country.

Whether or not you define this as a "trickle" is entirely up to you. I prefer to think of it as a series of successively smaller waves, occurring unpredictably over many weeks. The biggest movement is definitely the first two weeks of May, as we've been seeing since the end of April.

We're in it now. Your school had movement during 3 separate days last week. That's a lot, and there has been plenty of movement all over the place. There will be more as deadlines from the movement last week pass, and more offers are released. The next two weeks will be slower than the first two weeks, but movement will continue into June and July, with less and less in each successive two week period, until every class is filled and it stops.

Just met a guy who got off 1 WL on his third app cycle.. never lose hope, he also said he sent in a mailed physical letter and it really worked.. might be an idea 😂😅
Lol. Almost feels like that would be asking to get rejected if it isn't taken the right way...

currently on one WL and apparently, the class is full.
slowwwly prepping for reapplication & looking for jobs but don't know what to do 😇
ALL classes are full right now. The reason WL movement isn't over isn't because classes aren't full -- it's because there are still people holding more than one A, which means some classes won't be full tomorrow, or the day after, or next week!

That sense of incredible optimism... lol.

The optimism of someone whose spirit has yet to be broken by the application process.

Nah. I'm just trying to be supportive of all the WL folks, as I have no problem projecting myself to be in their position next year. I have been studying this pretty intensely for the past two years, and expressing myself, to the great annoyance of many, when I probably should have spent more time listening.

While I cannot quite bring myself to embrace the philosophy of the great @gonnif, who advises that we are rejected until informed otherwise (I honestly wouldn't be able to bring myself to bother with that level of pessimism), I do suffer from a fair amount of imposter syndrome, am in awe of people who seem far better than me who are thus far dealing with little or no success to date, and am fully aware that I will be more nervous, worried, sad, depressed, etc. than anyone here if I find myself with zero As at this time next year.

I am honestly doing nothing more than leveraging the objectivity that comes from not being personally involved to remind people of the numbers and the process. So far, so good, as several people I have been communicating with via DM have found success after being very concerned in the weeks leading up to 5/1.

Everyone won't be successful, but, as we both know from years past, many people who are freaking out right now will be M1s in the fall. It happens every year, and this year won't be any different. Someone please remember to tell this to me this time next year!

I don't think that the "rejected until informed otherwise" philosophy is pessimism, necessarily. I think it's just the wisest form of caution that one can take, to not sit back and relax after submitting your application. In the event that you aren't accepted this year, this advice helps you to ensure you're always doing something to improve yourself for potential reapplication until you get that acceptance.

Good morning everyone! 😊I hope you all are doing great. I've been running a program called "Heart to Heart and wanted to invite anyone who would be interested in participating. It's a letter writing program in which volunteers send weekly letters to hospice patients, many who have been impacted by COVID.

I know our waitlist journey isn't over yet. However, for anyone who has begun their reapplication process and are looking for volunteer hours, waiting patiently for an A, or even received an acceptance and would just be happy to participate, I would love to send you all some information to get you guys started.

Please DM if you would like to know more 🙂. Thanks and Goodluck to everyone!

Has anyone heard anything about BU’s waitlist movement? Didn’t really see anything on the thread but it looks like new people joined the FB group in the last week…

Yeah. I've gone back and forth with him a little on this.

I pulled the plug on the last cycle at the last minute because the stars seemed to be aligning against me with ECs shut down, MCATs being canceled, etc. It was definitely the right decision for me, and is the literal manifestation of his advice.

It's not about relaxing; it's about not applying if you expect to be rejected. Preparing for the worst is one thing. Expecting it is another. If I expect to be rejected, why bother applying?

The advice is offered not just to encourage people to constantly improve themselves. It's also offered to admonish people not to be disappointed if things don't work out, because, after all, they started out rejected, and nothing has changed, so, what's the problem?? They started out with no IIs, so, what's the problem? How dare anyone have the nerve to EXPECT a reward for effort and achievement in such a seller's market????

All I'm saying is that I'm not a proponent because, if I were, I wouldn't bother applying, just like I didn't last cycle, because I actually did expect to be rejected then.

I actually find this thread helpful knowing I'm not alone. Thanks to everyone who's active. Keep on posting updates and struggles!
I agree!! I choose to come on when I feel like mindlessly scrolling through posts/memes expressing sentiments we all share
But I also agree sometimes I just need to turn off all thoughts relating to my application because it gives me too much anxiety and stress

is it just me, but I feel like the schools that historicaly have big and great WL movements have been pretty silent this cycle? 🤔🤔
I think so too.... and I can't gauge if that's because a lot of people applied and we all got screwed over OR if things are just taking mad time to trickled down from the top schools. hoping its the latter for everyone's sake.. but slowly losing hope as the days go by.

The only good thing I have done is that i didn’t throw out my MCAT prep books just in case 🥲💪🏼

Could someone help me make sense of the following situation?

My WL school uses a tiered waitlist system - upper, middle, and lower. I was fortunate enough to have been assigned upper tier, and these past few weeks, they've been pulling students from the upper tier, as expected.

Yesterday, a student on SDN reported an acceptance...from the middle tier. There were several others of us still waiting on the upper tier that were really confused because we thought the tiers were like a filtering system (i.e. all upper tier students would be accepted prior to middle tier and then lower tier).

I know that technically med schools can do whatever they want, but what's even the point of having a tiered waitlist (besides giving applicants a sense of false hope) if you're just going to randomly pull students from any position on the list?

if 5-6 people on SDN posted that they got off the WL I'm currently on is it safe to assume that double that number in real life got off the WL too - i really think it's over having missed the biggest wave

It’s most likely that the school couldn’t find anyone that they want from the upper tier. Although upper tiers have advantage, schools are pretty adamant about keeping the class how they planned.

Yeah that makes sense. So they're likely matching waitlist spots based on demographics/experiences?

I'm gonna go ahead and call it for me guys...another year of waitlist disappointment. Best of luck everyone. Hope you get in. Ya'll are super cool people.
I'm feeling the same way about myself and my chances too. I've seen waitlist movement on all 3 WLs that I am on and none have included me. 🙁

Yea, some schools are clear about the fact that they will match demographics/experiences while some schools are pretty vague about it on purpose. But you probably get the point— diversity is an important matter for all schools now so sometimes schools gotta do what they gotta do

Opening the reapp...Is it immature to not apply to schools who require the CASPer.....
I was just looking at the CASPer dates and I noticed several schools I applied to that required it last year aren't listed this year....🤔
