2022-2023 APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey I saw that someone wrote in the google doc that Oregon Health and Science University sent out a mass acceptance email today (congrats!). Was that to all tracks? I applied to the neuro track but didnt hear anything today. Thanks!
I initially added mass email to OHSU for the Special Health Needs track but I saw that somebody changed it to all. I'm not sure if this means all of the tracks went out today? I got an email today but only applied to the Special Health Needs track.

Hi all. Congrats to those who applied to the Boston Va and got an interview. Did anyone who applied to the PTSD/Women's Trauma Recovery Tracks receive an invitation yet? Thanks!

So this is hard to write publicly to strangers. I have just received my 4th rejection. O interviews offered. I applied to a variety of sites. I was going to submit some applications this weekend but I deleted them. I am feeling extremely discouraged. I think it is because I have a gap last year and my materials must not be strong, which is why I am not submitting anymore applications as of now. My dissertation chair and dct did not mention any concerns after viewing my materials but maybe they don’t care. Thanks for letting me vent 🙁

Oh and all the sites stated they cannot provide feedback in their rejection emails so that stinks!

I appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. And, I'm in a similar position (2 rejections, 0 interviews so far). I'm afraid I am not as competitive as I thought I was and I should have looked into different sites. Anyways, just wanted to let you know you are not alone and remind both of us that it isn't over until its over.

I'm sorry, that sounds really rough. Is there anyone you trust outside your DCT and chair who can review your materials to help you decide whether it's worth applying to more sites or not?

How many sites have you applied to?

I asked a professor who graduated from my program to review and she gave me some feedback -I thought she was my mentor but I honestly felt she rushed my feedback - I will try reaching out to another professor.

I can understand the feeling. I was hoping to have more offers by now and running out of sites, however, I think this is really common? I would not get discouraged. Worse case scenario, you go into phase II. Statistically hardly anyone goes through both phases without matching and despite certain beliefs, phase II typically has great sites to offer. Many sites often reserve 1 placement in order to go into the second phase.
Do not give up, from what I understand, most offers come after Thanksgiving

I do not know if it provides comfort but a girl in my program who was a total badass across the board received 9 straight rejections before getting an interview. And she ended up matching and LOVING her site so much she went back to work there after post-doc. Now situations are different and you know yours better than any random person online but that is what experience I've been holding onto myself as I receive rejections.

You deserve to have any and all the feelings during this insane process but I am holding out hope you are going to hear some good news soon 🤞

Also in a similar position. 3 rejections, 0 interviews. I was told my application materials were very strong by multiple faculty members and supervisors. Sending good vibes your way, keep your head up. There's still several to hear from!

Thank you all for the kind words. It truly means a lot.

I am just realizing I’m not a strong enough candidate for the sites I am applying to. I don’t mean this in a way that I lack confidence- I just think not having a site last year because of COVID and my dissertation proposal being postponed to December might be impacting me more than I thought. I wish one site would give me some feedback.

Wait a minute. You were allowed to apply without being able to proposal? This may be an issue since most sites require the proposal to be completed unless your DCT wrote something specifically to the sites

I do think that this, in particular, may be impacting your responses. I know several sites that won’t consider people who have not proposed by their application date.

I proposed five days before many of my apps were due. Anecdotally, about 1/3 of the sites I was looking at required the dissertation be proposed before applying. Many others require it be proposed before matching or before the start date.

I would recommend looking for some additional sites that explicitly say they don't require you propose until the start of internship, because your odds are probably best there.

I did make sure I only applied to sites that specifically said proposal before ranking. I have a lot of hours but maybe not being at a site last year is hurting me more? Even though I heard a lot of students left sites due to COVID? So maybe my materials are just weak.

Hello, current intern here. I also had a gap year in clinical work and went on to get 8 interviews (w/8 rejections) and matched at my first choice! Rejections are part of this process and its hard to sit with this when we put so much time and effort into our applications - but trust the process and hold out hope! Sites understand how the pandemic has impacted hours/opportunities.

And when you do get interviews, take that as an opportunity to discuss what you learned about yourself and what you accomplished during this gap year - thats what I did on interviews! 🙂

Hang in there!

No I don't think the gap year would make a difference. Sites HAVE to take covid into consideration. Statistically, if you apply to 15 sites, the average number of interviews is 4 I think? I think just prepare your interview skills and hope for the best and trust the process! I know the rejections can be discouraging, but in the end, it will all work out the way it is supposed to!

Thank you. I applied to 18. There is a few sites I still have in mind maybe 3 more after carefully reflecting on my chances and trying to read between the lines.

Silly question but did your interview offer come earlier in the process. A site that reached out to me early on I thought was going to be at least my first offer. I think because it’s so many in a row and 3 in one day. It’s hard to process.

Something similar happened to me last year. I got 4 or 5 rejections in a row with 3 coming on the same day. Then, finally, I received my first invitation. Those rejection emails feel awful, but given the amount of sites you applied to I think it is incredibly likely that you will get a few hits!

Thank you. And thank you all for your kind words of support. Congratulations to everyone who got interviews. I don’t want to bring down the mood. I just felt very overwhelmed this morning.

Official Site Name: The University of Rochester Medical Center
Specialty Track or Site (e.g., for consortiums): Adult Track
Date Invitation Received: 11/19/21 at 2:25 PM CST
Method of Invitation (Phone call, personal/mass email): Mass Email
Interview Dates Offered: 12/6, 12/13, 1/10, 1/24
Congrats! Did the mass email have your name or anything, or just a full on mass email?

I am not sure if all programs tell their students this or not so forgive me if you have heard this. My training director told us that we should apply to a mix of sites with regard to competitiveness such as number of applicants vs interview spots vs internship spots, and PhD to PsyD ratio of past internship cohorts at the site.

Hey everyone I just noticed that for one of my sites their brochure and website have an application deadline that is different from the one on the APPIC page and the AAPI portal? Any thoughts on why that might be an which one might be more reliable?

I applied to generalist track at MEDVAMC, but did not receive an email about interviews. I noticed on the sheet that someone noted that on there - checked spam/trash and nothing is there. Does anyone know what the note on the sheet means? Is it safe to assume if I didn’t get an email, then I’m basically rejected?

This is helpful. I applied to a mix but I didn’t focus on phd vs psyd part so I will moving forward.

Thank you!

From my understanding, AAPI might be quicker to update. APPIC goes through approvals I think.

I'm in the same boat with MEDVAMC, here's some extra info for whatever it's worth: I have a colleague who did not receive an initial invite email from them, however they did receive a "Please respond to our interview request email" today. Reportedly, there was an email issue where some of the invites did not get sent successfully.

However, for those of us who received neither of those emails, I believe the most likely scenario is that we are somewhere on a waitlist/alternates-list and they're waiting to hear back from the first choices before finalizing invites/rejections. I say this because the email that they reportedly sent today urged applicants to respond to the invitation by a certain time today, or presumably they would lose the spot. If they have many gaps from people not responding/declining, they may return to the pool of applicants. Thus, perhaps they don't want to send rejections until they have a final roster of interviews.

This is all conjecture based on very little info, but it's what I'm guessing anyways!

If we received a semi-personal email with a link to fill out interview dates (e.g., survey monkey) should we also respond with a short email? I just filled out the survey asap but now am wondering if I should have confirmed that I received the initial email. I originally thought not necessary bc it's pretty general and they don't need all applicants to email back?

I know I'm probably overthinking this haha

I just filled out the link since it required me to write down my name. However, now I'm questioning this too lol. I imagine they did it that way so that they didn't get a barrage of emails to sift through?

I think we don’t need to worry about it. I did send a very brief response because I liked something in the message that was very unique (idk if we are talking about the same site lol), but I don’t think it’s necessary. Usually sites that do this seem to be confirming within a couple of days, or they confirm by the date when they tell you you’ll hear back.

Don't feel discouraged! You have sites you are still waiting for. So many people receive numerous rejections before they receive interviews (I know I did last year - I received so many before I receiving interviews... then received even more rejections). If your dissertation chair and your DCT didn't mention any concerns, it must mean they truly mean it was strong. This is a tough time... This is super anxiety provoking... But you will get an interview! 🙂 The gap year does not mean anything. A lot of times, internship sites see that you did something with the gap year (i.e., getting more experience, research, etc.). So many people I know with a gap year got a placement. I highly recommend applying to more - IF you feel like the sites are good.

Don't give up! You will get there! 💜💖

I saw on the gsheet that UChicago that rejection emails have been sent out. I applied to Adult/Health but haven't heard anything...
I'm in the same boat with one of my programs. Didn't get a rejection or interview offer. I sent a very gentle email just to confirm I haven't missed any communication from them. Hopefully that's the right move

Central TX VA folks, what locations have sent out invites? Or maybe it was all? I only applied to one of their locations.

Anyone know anything about Lexington VA? Saw they gave phone calls earlier this week but I haven’t heard anything. I’m hoping they just haven’t gotten to me yet? Gotta keep the hope alive!
