2024-2025 McGovern

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received my secondary 6/10, but submitted it 6/25 (2 weeks + 1 day later).

Does anyone know how heavily the 2 week "deadline" is weighed during the admissions process?

In their FAQ's section they said "We encourage applicants to complete the secondary application within 1-2 weeks of receiving the secondary application invitation" so it isn't grounds for an auto-rejection, just wanted to see if anyone had insight into whether it's a strong factor they look consisder.

Thanks!

to my understanding, the whole two weeks rule is more for timing. the earlier you submit, the earlier you can get a potential interview and potential pre-match/acceptance kind of situation!

but as a personal anecdote, last year i turned in secondaries within that two week time frame while some of my friends took 1-2 months to submit and they got accepted... while i'm reapplying 🤣 but that's okay, that's life!

so while it certainly helps you in the long run, i don't think adcoms will look at your application and look to see if it was within two weeks or not and hold it against you or anything.

good luck! 👍

Please discuss
one of the following:
* A challenging situation or obstacle you have faced in the past
* Any academic road bumps in your academic career (low academic performance, failing course, dropping/retaking of courses)
In your answer include: Why was it challenging? How did you handle it? Knowing what you know now, would you do anything differently? What did you learn?

Question 2: (2500 character limit)
Describe a time or situation where you have been unsuccessful or failed. What did you learn from this experience and how have you applied this learning to your work and/or life?

Question 3: (2500 character limit)
From what you understand about the rigors of medical school, what do you think will be the biggest challenge for you? How do you think you are prepared for these challenges?

Question 4: (2500 character limit)
What hesitations or reservations, if any, do you have about joining the medical profession?

Good luck to all applying!
Interview Feedback:

Would my response to the following prompt from another secondary that I've prewritten also fit the "Any challenging situation/obstacle..." part of McGovern Q1? For context, I've written about a group project
Describe a situation in which working with a colleague, family member or friend has been challenging. How did you resolve, if at all, the situation as a team and what did you gain from the experience that will benefit you as a future health care provider? (Max 2500 characters)

Does Mcgovern send an email letting you know they received your application?

yea I believe so. also do y'all think mcgovern is gonna send interviews this week, or is it more likely to start like august 1?
Im looking on the portal and it says my app is complete, I just never got an email from them like the other schools. I was wondering if that was just the norm

Not all schools send a bunch of emails. If they have a portal that they keep updating often that's the best way for you to see status.
If they want to interview you, they will send an email.

I appreciate the insight, I was in a similar situation with another school and just got interview invite today haha

Hii longtime lurker here - I got an II today and a one-way virtual assessment. Does anyone know what the vibe of this is? Similar to UTMB maybe?
This is new for McGovern, so you may have to clue everyone in about it!

For the 1st question, what is the general opinion on writing about family issues for my challenging situation? It's nothing crazy deep, i really didn't have a great relationship with my parents coming into college and it was kind of both of our faults and through college our relationship has gotten so so much better becasue i've done more self reflection on the kind of daughter i was being to them and just learning to forgive them for things.

When would be a good time to send a letter of interest? I haven't received an ii and was wondering if I should send one.

If anyone has done the Kira assessment, would you say it’s similar to UTMB’s/Dell’s secondary?
Here's the comment of one of this year's applicants who has completed this:
#78
don't grill the poor dude with questions, now, McGovern asked people not to share what the questions were.

Just completed the one-way video questions! The confidentiality agreement says I can't share any details but I found it to be pretty low-stress even as someone who *despises* these types of assessments.

My LM is 72 and I submitted 6/10 : )
Congrats! Have you had your interview yet? How did it go?

Incoming MS1 here. Happy to answer any questions!
1. What have you heard about the interview process this cycle? Looks like McGovern changed the format (from MMIs to 1:1s with professors).
2. Why did you choose McGovern over your other choices? Looks like you had quite a few options (congrats!)
3. What advice would give to an applicant who is getting ready to interview?

Not sure they were MMIs last year.

I agree, they have not used MMIs at McGovern in the past, it has always been two one-on-one interviews.
The MSAR this year does say MMI format, for some reason.
We will hope to hear back from the first few people who go to McGovern interviews to see what the format is.
The new thing for McGovern this year is they are asking you to do a brief online video-response exercise before your interview day- maybe that is what they are calling the MMI-style?

After receiving my II the portal changed and it confirms that this year it will be 2, one-on-one interviews.

Thank you for the clarification. My confusion stemmed from the MSAR (which I guess is wrong). Since the format hasn't changed, is there a place you recommend I go to get a sense of what to expect and how to prepare for the one-on-one interviews? Grateful in advance for your advice!

First post of each school thread has an interview feedback link, see previous people’s comments about their interviews at this school

someone plz help me understand the interview day schedule:

on the schedule, there are 2 two sections for interviews. the first one is 2 hours and the second one is one hour. But we're supposed to have two 30 min interviews.
So are we supposed to log into the interview portal and just wait an hour to see when the interviewers will show up? Why is the allotted time 2 hours when the interview is supposed to be 30-60 min?

Your first interview might be at noon for example and your second at 1:30, both within a noon to 2 pm window.
