2024-2025 McGovern

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone 🙂 This is my first post on SDN, so I'm sorry that it's a bit awkward and that I'm changing the subject. I just recently got off the WL so I'm currently scrambling through a long to-do list and lots of big life changes.

I'm writing to see if someone might be able to help me check just one thing off my list--transcripts. I'm very confused about it and what I'm supposed to do. I'm supposed to submit to TMDSAS and McGovern separately, right? I got the request email from TMDSAS, but when I go into the portal, there's nothing there (can't see my application beyond a pdf, no [status] page, nothing). For McGovern, do I just download/send the transcripts to myself (from Parchment and Clearinghouse), and then from there send the pdfs to the email they provided on the '2025 Entering Class Checklist' page?

I'm sorry if this is actually meant to be straightforward and I'm just not getting, but if someone could please help an anxious, overwhelmed girl out, I'd really appreciate it 🙂

Congrats, future classmate! 🙂

I sent my transcripts separately to TMDSAS and McGovern. I was able to send mine directly to McGovern (may also be UT Health Houston depending on the service) and did not have to get them myself and then send. I’m not sure what the TMDSAS issue is, if this is your first A that may be why it’s funky. It doesn’t hurt to send them a message to double check, usually they’re pretty quick at getting back to you!

Feel free to PM about other specific checklist items! You should be able to submit a scholarship application until June so definitely be sure you remember that 🙂

Official transcripts have to go directly from your college to the school, not passing through you as an intermediate step.
Request your college to send the transcript directly to McGovern, at the email address McGovern gave you.

Sorry, they are as clear as mud 🙄

Okay, got!! Thank you so much for clarifying that for me! It actually makes me feel much better to know my TMDSAS portal is not supposed to be doing that and it's not just me haha (it is my first A, so that makes sense because it seems like they've just deemed the cycle over for me and closed my access to that application). I just sent them a message, so hopefully they'll be able to help me with that soon!!

I am already anticipating having questions about other checklist items, so I'll definitely PM you if I'm lost again haha, thank you!!

Yes, you're totally right about that, my bad! It's just been a minute since the last time I sent transcripts electronically, so I was a bit fuzzy on the details and wanted to have it all clear before doing it (because knowing me, I would mess it up and have to pay for it twice :/). Thank you for clarifying that for me! TBD regarding TMDSAS haha, hopefully it's just an issue on their end and they'll be able to help me out soon.

I’m pretty sure that schools can see if you have a match but they don’t don’t know what your rankings were. When I went to the preview weekend, McGovern dean mentioned that schools have to contact each other if they want to accept an already matched student
That's an interesting comment lol... so like.. what is the other adcom supposed to say when one adcom says they want to take a student from them lol

If you’re Nico Harrison, you simply send them to the other school even if that student is perfectly happy where they are
no thats wrong. you wait till they sign the lease to the apartment, move in, meet their classmates, then 5 minutes before orientation you stop them at the door and tell them to pack their sunscreen because they just got traded.

I know you guys are bantering here, but for future people who might come back and read the last few posts I'd like to clarify:

Med school admissions are not like pro sports: you can't be traded to another school like a player can be traded to another team, without your consent.
If you get an offer from a WL and you are already accepted in Texas, you have the choice, to stay or trade.

All this trading up ends tomorrow by 5 PM.
The TMDSAS school directors respect this deadline and will get any more planned offers made tomorrow.

After that, people could still withdraw from a TMDSAS class to go to a new offer OOS. Any gaps created by this action will be filled with Waitlisted students who have no present TMDSAS acceptances.

The thing @greenfuzzypeople mentioned is pretty rare and refers to an admissions director asking to take a student who has already committed (CTE) to another school. The other school can say, "no, you can't have him!"

Now that the May 15th deadline has passed, is it likely that McGovern has already filled most of the waitlist spots? Are the odds of getting off now pretty slim?
Unless you do not have a texas acceptance, then it would be more in your favor (since all acceptance-holding waitlist candidates would be disqualify from being considered). This is assuming there are positions opened of course.

Question for current students: Are people talking about HB 5294 (bill currently in committee in the senate that, if passed, would mandate all Texas medical schools use A-F letter grading, eliminating any form of P/F grading--regardless of clinical or non-clinical years)?

I'd just really like to know what students are saying/how they're feeling and if there are any organized efforts to fight this because I can't be the only one who's scared by this.

Somebody posted this email template yesterday to reddit if you desire to advocate against this bill.

"I'm writing to respectfully urge you to amend House Bill 5294 by striking the following clause: (b) Each medical school: (1) shall ensure that any coursework offered in the curriculum required for a medical degree or certificate assesses a student's performance on the coursework based on the assignment of a letter grade from A to F; and (2) may not offer coursework described by Subdivision (1), including any assignment or other component of the coursework, on a pass/fail basis. This provision would eliminate pass/fail grading -an evidence-based, merit-driven system used by over 80% of U.S. medical schools, including Harvard, Stanford, Mayo Clinic, and Baylor. I urge you to instead consider language similar to Indiana's recent bill, which requires a "merit-based evaluation system" while preserving institutional autonomy. Pass/fail grading is not part of DEl policy and does not advantage or disadvantage any racial group. It is widely supported in the medical education literature for promoting collaboration, reducing burnout, and preserving academic integrity. Consider the following studies:

  • Bloodgood et al. (2010, Acad Med) - Pass fail reduced burnout with no drop in Step 1 scores.
  • Spring et al. (2011, Med Educ) - Pass/fail improved well-being and interpersonal skills.
  • Rohe et al. (2006, Mayo Clin Proc) - Pass/fail increased morale, no impact on academic performance.
  • Hojat et al. (2009, Acad Med) - Cooperative grading fosters empathy and professionalism.
Personally, I chose Baylor over other top schools outside of Texas in large part because of its pass/fail curriculum. I wanted a learning environment that prioritized skill-building and clinical growth, not competition and rote memorization. Had this bill been in effect, I likely would have chosen to leave Texas. Mandating A-F grading will make Texas medical schools less competitive and push top applicants to other states. It will increase student stress, discourage innovation, and weaken the clinical focus of early training. Please consider striking this clause and replacing it with a requirement for merit-based evaluation that gives medical schools the flexibility to uphold rigor while also prioritizing well-being and workforce readiness. I am not reaching out due to a lack of academic commitment, but of a desire to focus on hands-on skills and real medicine over rote memorization. Thank you for your time and your service to Texas.

We have until 2:30 today to be heard. You can send written testimony by email to [email protected] by 2:30 TODAY (5/22/2025) in order for it to be addressed before they vote in the Senate. Please take the time to do this, even if it’s verbatim from the wording above."

Some TX medical students spoke on the bill this morning at the capitol. The recording is available on the TX Senate website: https://senate.texas.gov/videoplayer.php?vid=22251&lang=en. The testimony over bill HB 5294 specifically starts at the 2 hrs 39 mins mark. Really proud/grateful for the medical students who spent hours waiting and provided their testimony here!

Hi!! Got off the waitlist earlier this week. Sent two LOIs (probably overkill bc they say it won't affect your chances but mentioning for transparency). Only II this cycle so super excited that I don't have to apply again!! For current/future pre-meds reading this, it's not over until it's over. All you need is one A 🙂

Hey everyone! So, unfortunately, I had 4 II this past cycle and am still on the waitlist for all 4 of them :/ I was really hoping McGovern (my top choice) would really pull through but I’ve come to terms with reapplying. I was wondering if anyone had insight on how much I should change for my essays in reapplication? I’ve already rewritten my PS and PC essays completely, but how much should I change my activities descriptions since I find it kind of hard to rewrite my tasks in the 500 characters limit. Any help would be amazing! Thanks

Also on the WL for McGovern and prepping to reapply so you're not alone! I've heard from an adcom at TT El Paso that activities don't need to be changed or changed as much as the 3 primary essays since they're so short and more just descriptive instead of storytelling. If you find that you can word things better or have better reflection on some activities, feel free to improve them but you don't have to change them just for the sake of changing them.

I'm collecting start dates for all the TMDSAS schools-
Can someone in the 2025 entering class please inform me of the date you report for orientation?
Thank you and I will list them all in the Republic of Texas thread.
