2024-2025 McGovern

Could someone clarify to me the WL process for Tx schools.

I matched to my 3rd choice. If I’m WL at McGovern and get accepted, am I automatically withdrawn from my current match because I was accepted to a school I ranked higher or do I have to formally accept?
I answered a similar question over hereWL offers

I need to do a FAQ post on our Republic of Texas thread pretty soon

In the past, most movement has happened in April/May. It's honestly unpredictable 😀 All dependent on if a lot of people want to give up their seats for OOS (or other reasons)

Could any current students shed some light on the exam schedule at McGovern? Tried looking online but was a bit confused. Is it mostly fridays, mostly mondays, or a mix of both?

Hi there, I'm an MS1. So exams in foundations (1st semester) are held in 3 blocks (roughly 4-5 weeks each). Exams during this semester are held on Thursday (for the main exams) and Friday (anatomy exam). Second semester onwards, exams are held at the end of each module (generally around 4-5 weeks except for a few which are longer) on Fridays.

Oh that’s really nice. So you in theory get a weekend off on exam weeks. Thanks for the response!

Yeah actually you get the weekend off after exams and you get the week of the exams to prepare with no extra classes or required activities (except for like review sessions).

That’s amazing! Nice to see they make exam week a little bit more bearable

Random hypothetical question...
I was waitlisted at McGovern. I have 2 other As at OOS DO schools. I know that the majority of waitlist movement happens in April/May, but they can hypothetically pull you off the waitlist until the day before classes start, right? Well, both of the schools that I have As at start before McGovern, so let's say I enroll at one of those schools and then get a notification that I was pulled off the waitlist at McGovern... Would I be able to accept that spot even though I've already enrolled and maybe started classes at another school?

Are you IS? You could in theory drop out of a DO school to accept an MD but it will come at a great cost (a semester or two of fees fees?). Texas schools make you write a promissary note for second semester and I assume D.O. schools might do the same.

Agree and the other thing is that McGovern will be pretty much done with their WL offers by the end of June so unless your DO school has orientation that early, you won’t have this time conflict.

Anyone finish McGovern's scholarship application yet? I know it's only been available for a week, but any idea of when we might start hearing back? Trying to not be neurotic and anxious over here, but not having much luck lol 😱
Checked up on this!
- Scholarship decisions were released in late April last year for some... that was the earliest they heard back
- There also was not an application last year; all accepted students were automatically considered

Prediction is late April when we can first start hearing back if they are committing to it being on a rolling basis.

Does McGovern match scholarship offers?
this only applies to someone considering a waitlist offer from McGovern.
Have seen some people in the past switch from other schools to McGovern after asking them for some money to match they already had while coming off a waitlist but having a match and scholarship at another school.

Did anyone else get an email from U of Houston housing? I would assume this isn’t the waitlist for university housing but not sure.

Does McGovern match scholarship offers?
They have been known to consider (if not match) other scholarship offers in the past. If you have another acceptance with a scholarship, whether you are already accepted to McGovern or get pulled off the waitlist, it is worth letting McGovern know before they send out scholarship offers, especially if it is a substantial amount.

I took a quick peek at previous years' match lists and noticed a rather large upswing in ortho matches. Have they been putting ancef in the water at McGovern?
I think it means that McGovern has opportunities for those interested in Orthopedics and supports those applicants in being successful in the match

Did med schools already started processing WLs, someone mentioned they got off WL in El Paso?

I don't know what you mean by processing WLs, but with most if not all of the seats at TMDSAS schools filled by the Match, a person who is on a WL can only be offered admission if someone withdraws from the current class roster.
There is little action until the end of April when people might decide among several choices to go to a school outside of Texas.

Anyone receive any information about when we should hear back about scholarship info? Anyone call and ask?

It was an OOS and as @wysdoc states OOS seats in particular require someone to withdraw since the numbers are controlled.
IS is a little more complicated since they would have had some cushion in admits and so more than a few have to drop before they start adding.

Best of luck man, if it weren't for the insanely cheap in-state tuition here I'd probably also have done the same if I had options OOS

If anyone attended the reapplicant seminar today and took notes, would you mind sharing them with me? I wasn't able to attend due to a time conflict.

Yes but only for students who didn't interview at McGovern
Interesting. The assumption seems to be that if one made it to the interview, they dont need help in reapplication?

Has anyone been to more than one of these, i.e., different schools reapplicant seminars? Wondering how much difference there is in the advise given by different programs.

I would take that to mean that if they interviewed this year, they still have an active application and might still be on the WL if they didn't match

I've attended 2 so far, and both of them gave similar info on the common mistakes/deficiencies in applications, with only minor differences in the content. The Q&A is the big part where they answer specific questions

Interesting, I didn't get any reapplicant seminar email from McGovern and was pre-II R'd. I got them from UTMB and TAMU

Yes i agree, i believe this is the reason
