2024-2025 UNLV Secondary Essay Prompts

#1 - Required: Why are you interested in the Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV and how does your background and future goals contribute to our mission? (500 words)

#2 - Required: Briefly discuss how you envision yourself contributing to the care of our growing and diverse population in the state of Nevada. (500 words)

#3 - Required: Briefly discuss how you define professionalism and how you will demonstrate professionalism in the classroom at the Kerkorian School of Medicine and in clinical training settings in our valley. (500 words)

#4 - Required: Provide a BRIEF chronological list of your time since graduating from high school up to the point of applying to medical school. Do not write in essay form here. This should simply be a list by years. (250 words)

#5 - Optional: Applicants who are Nevada Connection are strongly encouraged to share more about their tie to Nevada in this essay. Nevada residents or applicants who are out of state (western region) with no tie to Nevada may also use this box to elaborate on their commitment to Nevada, per our mission, if they would like. (250 words)

#6 - Optional: Applicants are welcome to share with the Admissions Committee any disruptions or impacts to your application components, the application process, and/or your personal life that may be relevant to your holistic profile. Please also use this area to present any information related to academic and/or MCAT performance that requires further information. (250 words)

#7 - Optional: If you have any other information you believe is important for the Admissions Committee to consider, please include it here. Do not restate information already in your primary AMCAS application. (250 words)

For individuals who are reapplicants you will also have an additional question appear in #7 due to conditional logic that is:

"If you are a reapplicant to UNLV KSOM, please include your changes/improvements since your last application."

Good luck to all applying!

Hello Everyone and Welcome to the 2024-2025 AMCAS cycle. We're very excited to start another great admissions season. Schools were able to download today and by Monday our application software will start doing invitations to secondary for those who qualify. For details on any portion of our process, please don't hesitate to visit our Applicants website. We look forward to providing insights and resources here and you are welcome (and encouraged) to also email us when you do have additional questions at [email protected]

Would Grammarly count as an AI tool for their disclosure policy?

Would Grammarly count as an AI tool for their disclosure policy?
Grammarly does not count as AI (it falls under the grammar check category). Our question states:
The incorporation of AI tool utilization does not include things like Microsoft Word or Google Docs spell check, grammar check, or word count.
Examples of AI to disclose would include systems like ChatGPT, Jasper.AI, Essai.Pro, etc. The use of AI does not disqualify applicants.

Hi all! I have a question for #4 of the secondary. How detailed should we write for the chronological list? It says by years, so something as simple as like "2019~2023 - college"? If we are taking a gap year, should we describe what we are doing now? I'm a little confused since it asks us not to write in essay form but the word limit is 250 (sometimes I feel compelled to write closer to the word limit...😢). Thanks!

I just followed the outline they gave.
2008-2012: Attended College at Institution Name;
2012: Completed bachelor's degree;
2010-2015: Worked at XYZ Inc.;
2016: Service trip to Venezuela;
2017-2019: Worked as a barista at Super Coffee;
Present: EMT Boulder City Fire
It also mentions that you can upload your resume or cv so if you feel like there is more you'd like to add, you can do it that way.

Definitely simple - it's designed to provide review teams and the committee a quicker read of your timeline to application, especially when the experiences area can be choppy due to its restrictions as well. (Also, the word count is just the limitations of the box area on the site.) If you feel you'd like to provide more, there is an area to upload a CV if you wish, but that is not required.

Thank you both for the reply!

@UNLV Admin 2

I graduated with a B.S. 10 years ago, therefore my biology and psychology prerequisites are expired for UNLV. I have taken physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and organic chemistry in the past year as well as achieved a 515+ MCAT.

Is there a waiver or wiggle room for the expiration? The applicant's website is pretty cut and dry with the language.

Thank you.

You should honestly contact someone directly in admissions who can access your application. Better to get this conversation sorted in writing rather than through a forum where you’re “anonymous”.

Yes, good point.

Anyone not receive a secondary yet but got the “we’ve received your app” email?

So we do send out confirmation when AMCAS applications arrive in our software (sounds like you received that message). Our secondary is by invitation, so you do have to be meeting our minimum GPA, MCAT, and then be a NV resident or Western Region resident. For those with NV Connection to qualify, we do need you to email us and note your tie so we can do an update to your file for eligibility for secondary. If you believe you should have received an invitation to secondary but did not, please don't hesitate to email us at [email protected] so we can take a look at your file to confirm your status.

Have OOS interview invites been sent out yet by any chance
No, we're still in file review for Nevada Resident at this time. We do file review and invitation to interview between now all the way up to end of December. Our full interview cycle is September up to February. We do rolling admissions as well.

Thank you! I just want to say, I appreciate that you are on SDN giving us updates! Really calms the nerves!

Has file review for OOS with ties to Nevada begun yet?

Has file review for OOS with ties to Nevada begun yet?
It did recently begin. Our pools are very large this year (biggest ever in the history of the school) so our teams are working to get through them all in our various stages of verification and then review. We do consider files and issue invitations to interview between August and end of December - so there will be a lot more time across our process. For full details on the schedule of our cycle, please visit: Admission Selection Process and Timeline

Looking at the conversation threads for the past two years, it seems like a majority of calls have gone out on the 3rd or 4th Friday of the month, with one Thursday call date. Are calls being made on 10/25?

Hi Everyone! So with campus being closed on Friday for Nevada Day, calls for October will be made on Monday 10/28. The Admissions Committee date can float a bit from month to month based on their availability but it is typically mid-to-later in the month. 🙂

Any idea when more interviews will be coming? Especially for OOS applicants
Review team has moved into Nevada Connections and those invitations have just started going out (Nevada resident can also still be in review as well). They continue to work through the pools and invitations will keep rolling until mid-to-late December. OOS with no ties are typically reviewed in the last phase and that is the most difficult pool at this time due to the size of NV resident and NV connection.

Have those who interviewed in October been considered by the Admissions Committee, and can potentially receive a call? Or is 10/28 purely for interviewees in August/September?

This would be a portion of the September interviews. We do send files to committee in the order of our interview dates.
