This might just be me being hella neurotic, but if we didn't have any extenuating circumstances outside of normal things like Zoom school it would be fine to leave the COVID essay blank...right?

I would mention the Zoom school as an impact. Some applicants might have already graduated before COVID struck and weren't affected like that.

has anyone received a confirmation email after submitting? or just on the portal where is says finished at the bottom is how we will know it’s all good

Is the covid essay optional? The other essays say optional but they force you to write something for the covid one. Should I just put N/A if covid didn’t really impact my app??

That's what I did

I personally left blank and went to “zoom school” during the pandemic. It didn’t adversely impact me. In fact, I enjoyed the virtual lectures and being able to rewind if needed.

If you don't have a Premedical Advisory Committee, NYMC asks for three letters, two science and one that can be (non science, science, research...)

It also seems like they accept optional letters of evaluation. If we meet the three-letter requirement, can we add a fourth letter as well? If so, how would I let them know which letter would act as the optional one?

Update - so apparently my major letter doesn't count because the prof didn't teach me a course that matches with my major exactly, even though the class is required for my major and the prof is in my department. Think I shot myself in the foot here :/

Is the class course code not the department?
Like how would they know it’s not required lol

Having a letter from Professor in your major as a hard requirement is so dumb. Why is nymc so strict about its LOR requirements?

So I applied under the assumption (whoops) that a research letter would count as a science faculty letter but it did not. I opted to submit my application as is with the letters I submitted and they told me they use a holistic review process so maybe we haven’t shot ourselves in the foot too bad…at least for now.

Yeah, I’m opting to have my application complete as is… I figure might as well be marked complete early than try to scramble for a last minute LOR that probably will be bad :/

If they let u submit it’s prob not the worst thing especially if they are saying they do holistic review.

Ironically, I was speaking to my mom about this and nearly said the exact thing word for word haha. No point in trying to scramble for a bad LOR from someone I haven't seen in 6 years or so.

I also have a research letter and will do the same. Did they ask you if u wanna submit with ur letters as is after u said you won’t be able to get a letter? Also, considering if u have a committee letter you bypass the requirements I don’t think they matter that much.

Yeah, they had emailed me saying I was missing a letter, so I replied regarding my research letter, as I really thought this counted since my PI was science faculty in my major dept. My research was for credit towards my major, and in a physics-based lab, so I was sad it does not count.

They replied that the course it was in does not count for a science letter (must be a professor in an AMCAS BCPM category; it can't just be a science faculty member) and asked if I would be able to secure another letter or if I would prefer to submit what I have now.

I opted for submitting what I have now and asked if this would greatly impact my consideration for an interview - to which their response was about the holistic process they use. So, hopefully, I am ok!

I emailed them about this a couple months ago, I don't have a major letter either and they told me to email them when my application is complete stating to use the letters I have available and they will consider my application without a major letter.

Has anyone received a confirmation email that their application is marked as complete, submit everything early July including the LORs but haven't heard back yet.
Same, submitted 7/3, everything is good but havent gotten an email about being complete yet, although they did says they can take from 4-6 weeks to process appications so not too worried right now.

Received an email inquiring which of my letters was from a professor that taught my major. I'm nontrad/career changer so 3/4 of my letters are from science faculty and PI at my post-bacc, and I submitted one humanities letter from a prof that taught a humanities class required for graduation (that was also part of my major)... will they be okay with that?

They specifically are looking for a professor who taught within the department of your major. So, if you were an English major, then someone in the English department. However, per other posts in this thread it looks like, if you don't have a letter like this, you can still submit your application as is and it will be reviewed holistically.

i also emailed them about this requirement. They said that if you graduated before 2023 then the major LOR requirement is waived

EDIT: i was mistaken you must have had to of graduated before 2022 in order for the requirement to be waived

Is it necessary to complete the secondary? I was in my Freshman year of college when COVID-19 started, and other than Zoom school, I wasn't really affected by the pandemic. Would it look bad if I didn't complete it?

It's always necessary to complete the secondary, whether or not you fill out the COVID prompt is your call.

Has anyone else not received an application complete email? Or for those of you who did, how long did it take? I submitted my secondary on 7/10 and haven't heard anything yet, but they say not to reach out about your application status.

I submitted first day (7/1) and got my "complete" email on 7/2. However I know historically they tend to be pretty slow to get through and verify/complete apps, so I wouldn't worry!

edit: per NYMC "It typically takes 4-6 weeks for our office to process your application. "
