MCG’s yield rate is roughly 65%, so realistically about 130 of those are going to commit!

Trying to gage my chances of getting off the WL rn… How did you find out the yield rate? I see that the Groupme number is now up to 284 as of late, which means there are ~20 spots left to fill initially. Am a bit nervous, ngl 😅

I took a look at admit.org and saw the following for MCG's stats (seems like 2023 b/c it aligns w/ MSAR):

580 interviews & 403 admits.

Their class size in 2023 was 264, so MCG overadmitted 139 students?? Looking at MCG's thread on SDN back then, it seems we had movement on the alternate list. With that, I am struggling to understand how essentially >139 students declined their As. Does this allude to MCG being a very fluid school where many accepted students have this school down as a backup or are just strong applicants w/ multiple As? Do the adcoms know this given prior year trends and overaccept for this reason? Why not just accept 264 spots and just create a WL to then pull off of when spots open lmao. Like that's how I initially thought the WL would work here :/

This is because of yield. 35% of those accepted to MCG turn it down. 403*0.65=262, which is essentially the exact number you cited! MCG’s yield is actually substantially higher than most of the top institutions in the nation. Yale’s yield is only 35% for instance, and Mayo Clinic’s yield is 50%.

Yields tend to be set in stone and usually only vary a little bit year to year, so most medical schools will overadmit with the expected yield in mind. They include a margin for error that helps ensure they don’t end up with too many students. Waitlists are then drawn from to account for the margin if it still exists when all is said and done.

Making up numbers here as an example, MCG might initially admit 1.4x the class, or 370 students. Factoring in yield, 370*0.65=241 students. They would then admit the last 23 seats from the waitlist. If we assume the WL has a higher yield than the regular pool, at ~75%, they would admit 30 total students to fill those 23 seats, arriving at the 403 total admits.

I am just confused with how they're managing the waitlist with regional campus pathway applicants. Like if a regional spot opened up, I feel like a regional applicant should be given preference over a regular applicant. It would make more sense to admit a candidate who's willing to fulfill the pathway requirements, right? If a regular spot opens up, then I feel the person w/ high stats should be given preference. By this logic, it makes more sense to pick the student who's a better mission fit + academically ready. How do you think the school is managing these dual priorities? I wonder if there's a set class size for the pathway program (not counted towards 304 total). Maybe the recent increase in class size was to account for the new pathway?

I'm also regional pathway, I just filled out the campus preference form. Maybe include in the description that the regional pathway is factored into your decision in favor of the Augusta campus? That's what I did at least. At this point I wrote that I'll attend any campus, this is my top choice 😭

I emailed admissions just to double check that they meant to send it out to us, bc the last time I asked, they were very clear about not sending a form out to us. Ultimately, I’ll take any campus I get into, but I do wanna remain in consideration for the NW pathway cuz it’s perfect for me.

Yeah, so regional pathway applicants will only be considered for the Augusta + regional campuses. There’s zero chance we get placed into Savannah or Athens. They’ll just take that spot and give to a regional applicant if they are next in line.

You'd get the A, but only for regional pathway (Augusta -> NW or SW). So they basically ignore the fact that now there's one less spot at Athens/Savannah. That's the info I have as of now. Who knows if they'll change it later tbh, bc idk doing it this way seems to overcomplicate things.

Additionally, the fact that admissions has told us to not fill out the campus preference form seems to further imply this, as we don't get a say in campus choice.

Yeah I just got the same email. I hadn’t realized :/
They said I could just go to the school and tour it on my own but I was hoping to do a student-led one to gain some perspective from their POV.

I haven’t ranked the campus yet because I wanted to see them all first before deciding. I’m not sure if Augusta has ever had an open house or if there will be one anytime soon (besides a Second Look). So I will probably just go up there sometime just to get a feel for Augusta as I’ve never even been there.

Nah I wouldn’t sweat it tbh. It would actually be unfair to rank people higher based on that, given that many people don’t attend b/c of scheduling, financial, or other factors.

I think so--my question was more so does the ranking get reported when residency apps roll around? I know at Mayo and Yale, they supposedly are not, for example. At most schools, my understanding is that if the school has AOA, they will have an internal ranking of some sort - whether they are transparent about it or not - and that is reported later on the dean's letter.

MCG claims on the MSAR that they don’t internally rank. However, I’m not sure how trustworthy that is! Admit.org does not have many of the boxes filled in.

Having AOA does not necessarily mean that the internal ranking is sent to residencies. However, AOA in itself is a way of stratifying applicants, so it is usually considered a bad thing

MCG doesn't rank students at all. AOA at MCG is decided purely by your shelf scores M3 year. Residencies do get our clerkship grades and shelf scores via the MSPE though.

Fellow waitlister here. My understanding is that you get an assignment to a campus when you get an offer off the waitlist.

Also a fellow WL applicant. You’ll get your campus assignment after you get accepted, but there’s no guarantee they’ll give you your #1 (depends on space).

If you’re a regional applicant, then there’s no campus preference and you’ll be assigned to the pathway you chose upon acceptance.

The Office has already begun meetings to distribute these assignments but isn’t able to provide individual updates at this time, so we should just keep a lookout for an email that has it.

Campus assignments have been made already. There may still be some without an assignment because more people chose Augusta than available spots

I've now refreshed my inbox exactly 3,742 times, and at this point, I'm pretty sure my phone screen is permanently imprinted on my eyeballs. MCG, please have mercy. I'm one rejection away from joining a monastery in Tibet to meditate on where I went wrong as a premed. I've started stress-eating vitamins just in case being extra healthy somehow boosts my chances. If I don't hear something soon, I'm gonna write a poem titled Ode to MCG, tattoo it on my chest, and perform it live outside the admissions office. Please send help. Or preferably an A.

The April 30th deadline does not mean you have to withdraw your WL placements. To my knowledge, you can still hold onto any WLs you have, but you can only hold one A.

April 15 is a suggested deadline and not actually strict

I think 4/30 is the earliest WL movement could begin. Ofc depends on how much of the class is committed to enroll. I was told that first week of May is where majority of the WL movement happens.

I expect the earliest we'll hear about WL movement is May 1st. I'm honestly just relieved the PTE deadline doesn't fall on a Friday this year because having to spend an additional 2 days for any news would be torture. On the bright side, all this waiting has encouraged me to spend more time on self-care and my personal hobbies that I had to sacrifice for work, the MCAT, ECs, and grinding out essays. I'd also like to hear something sooner rather than later, though, for financial and housing reasons.
