2024-2025 Oklahoma

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was accepted to both campuses and got to choose which one I attended. One of the biggest reasons I chose Tulsa was because of the Bedlam experience, which is a clinic run by OU Tulsa students. During your 3rd year of school at the SCM, you will actually have your own panel of patients in which you are their provider. There is an attending there to help you through your treatment plans, but you get a good start on practicing medicine. Another reason I chose Tulsa was because of the small class size. By being on a small campus, there are more research and leadership opportunities than there are students, so there are lots of opportunities to build your CV. Tulsa is a very generous city and that shows in our scholarship opportunities as well. Because we are smaller in size, we get to do a lot of retreats and build one-on-one relationships with attendings. They all know your name and interests, which makes for a really welcoming, safe learning space. A drawback of the Tulsa campus is there are limited residencies based here, so I do occasionally have to go to OKC to get involved with the specialty I plan to apply to, but it hasn't been a huge hinderance and I feel like the opportunities I have here outweigh the con of having to go to OKC a few times a year. I hope this helps!
Thank you for sharing your experiences!

OUCOM hosts various information sessions about the application process as well as about the program in general. Advisement When I was applying, I went to the application workshop and it was very helpful!

By the way, I'm a recent graduate from OUCOM, current Internal Med resident, and happy to answer any questions 🙂 Good luck with applications!
Hi! I am also interested in going into IM residency. Did you go to OKC and also how has OU helped prep to get into IM residency?

Yes, I was at the OKC campus. OU is really good at helping students prepare for residency, not just for Internal Medicine but all types of residencies! Before application season, students are paired with someone from Student Affairs who helps them to make plans, and if needed, backup plans as well. During that meeting, they go over things like how to write a good application, what your clerkship evaluators have noted as your strengths and weaknesses, how you stand compared to the rest of your class, if you are competitive for your chosen specialty or if you are at risk and need to apply to other specialties as backup, etc. (They’re also really supportive if you don’t match and have to SOAP as well.) OUCOM also provides various specialty-specific information sessions, both general fourth year/application workshops, as well as meetings featuring residents and attendings which are geared towards students of all levels through their interest groups. I found all of that very helpful!

OOS II received 9/9!

Secondary submitted 9/4.

Strong ties to state and attended OU from 2010-2014 (did not graduate).

2024-2025 Oklahoma Secondary Essay Prompt:

1. What other medical schools did you apply to? (List them)
See the helpful interview tips here: (Post # 7 in this thread)
Good luck to all applying!
Interview Feedback:
HI @wysdoc,

I completed the secondary. On the first page of the application the only question to write something was,
"6. Where else are you applying?"

But on the second page "OK Ties" it had the following prompts even though I selected the "NO" for all the questions on the first page, and they were the type of essay prompt boxes that you can not leave blank.

OK Ties (250) words)
1. Why are you applying to The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine?
2. Did you attend K-12, undergraduate, or graduate school in Oklahoma?
3. Do you have family or friends in Oklahoma?
4. Do you have another connection to Oklahoma?

For everyone that’s interviewed so far: MSAR says OU’s first date they’ll begin to send acceptances is 9/16. Dr. Baker told us in the interview yesterday that people could hear back starting next week all the way into January. I thought traffic rules were that we can’t get any accepts/WL until 10/15?!!!

My interview is 11/20 so I have not interviewed yet but my thoughts....

it seems pretty common for MSAR to be outdated in some of the smaller details. Also I think the traffic "rules" are actually traffic "strongly recommended," so maybe OU doesnt care about that date and wants to inform potential matriculants a little earlier? I do believe AAMC recommends that date because their system only allows response after 10/15, so they probably just want the schools to go by their timeline.

I could be wrong about all that either way, but I hope your interview went well! I wouldnt start freaking out if you dont hear about an A on 9/16. (I know this is easier said than done <3).

has the interview date fill up to November already?

I heard today is the first day that OU will send out acceptances… has anybody heard anything yet? OOS I on 9/12.

Do they reach out for an interview by email or phone call? I want to make sure I have their email set to VIP lol.

People who have interviewed, what was it like. Im a little scared going into a virtual interview, i feel like its harder to get my personality across. I tried to do some research and look at the SDN interview page but couldn't gather much. Is it open or closed, and do they ask traditional questions like why medicine, tell me abt yourself etc or is it more situational questions. Any help would be great!!

I think there's other comments with more info but, essentially the interview is split into two sections:
1) First 30-45 min is almost solely based on questions from the AAMC Core Competencies, asking you to show how exemplify them etc. It's closed file.
2) After a 15 min break, the 3 interviewers (2 faculty, 1 student) take a look at your file, then you go back and either discuss any red flags or questions about your app, or just continue as earlier if there's nothing that stands out

Honestly I felt that it was very well done for virtual interviews! They said they review applications after every 2 interview dates and send out acceptances. I interviewed on the 2nd date but still haven’t heard anything back yet. I’d love to hear if anybody’s gotten an A already!

Thank you! So after the 15 min break, is this just one session with the 3 interviewers or 25 min with each?

I interviewed the 1st date and haven't heard anything yet! I'm hoping we hear soon!!

Sorry I should have clarified; the whole interview (both sessions) are with 3 interviewers all at once. So it's basically like a panel style interview, where the three of them take turns asking you questions before the break, and then after the break they'll kind of just ask whatever they are feeling or curious about, not as structured.

thank you! was it kinda stressful with 3 interviewers all at once? I have only done 1 on 1 interviews so not sure how to feel.

I haven’t heard anything yet either, and if someone had they definitely would have posted it about on here. Hopefully we all hear soon
I’m curious what they tell the next batch of interviewees about the decision timeline since we were told they’d start making calls on the 16th and seems like maybe they didn’t?? We’ll see! Wishing the best of luck to everyone interviewing today!

I'm curious, too, but supposedly, they did the exact same thing last year and then waited to start calling until the week of October 15th (when schools are technically allowed to start accepting people).

I interviewed last week, does anyone have a guess for the earliest I could hear back? I’m assuming it’ll be at least two weeks.

i just interviewed on October 16 and wanted to ask if anyone knows what they look for after the interview? do they look at stats mostly or the entire file like the essays and letter if rec to make a final decision?
In the tour for interview invitees they told us that they combine your application as a whole (mcat, gpa, essays, letters of rec etc) and give that a score, and then they give you a score for your interview and add them together. everybody above a certain score/metric is automatically accepted, everybody else requires more consideration and could be accepted/could not be just depending on the situation.

Did they give you a timeline they’d let you know by?

Learned a lot at the tour yesterday. Last year, they interviewed less than 300 people. This year, they’re interviewing over 600. Okla City and Tulsa campuses combined, they’re only increasing the class by 12 spots - around 8 in Tulsa and 4 in OKC. If their overall score (interview, MCAT, GPA, ECs, LOR, application, secondaries, etc) for you is 90 or above, you’ve already received an offer. They’ll drop down to 85 in a couple of weeks. After that, they might drop down to 80 for the waitlist, if it’s necessary. They don’t send out post-II rejections for a few months, probably late December or January.

Thanks for mentioning this. Did they let you know anything about out-of-state students? I have my interview and campus visit coming up in November, but everything I've read so far mentioned that they have a high post-II acceptance rate. I'm just wondering how this would affect the rate for out-of-state students, and I'm too anxious to wait until next month to ask during my campus visit lol.

Do you guys know if a campus visit is mandatory? I am OOS and working full-time right now.

They didn’t say specifically. The high-II acceptance rate will inevitably go down as they more than double the number of interviews and only increase the class by 12. Afterward, where you return to get a swag bag and stuff. a woman from admissions would literally look up people’s score and tell them so they’d know their chances. If they give in state preference, I’m guessing that’s part of your score but I don’t know.

i am screwed i'm OOS too and already interviewed but now worried after this 🙁
If it was recent, you may have just not heard yet. If you’re above 90, you’ll be fine. And probably also if you’re above 85, just might take a little longer.

Did they say what a 90+ point application looks like?
