I know they place preference on southern and central illinois residents but does anyone know if they accept suburban residents around the Chicago area?

They definitely accept Chicagoland residents, however I'm pretty sure just less of them. It helps to have ties to Central/Southern IL is what I've been told but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

If you are URM/disadvantaged from the counties north of I-80 - there is a good chance for an interview

I received a confirmation of my primary being submitted today - it said it can take up to 8 weeks for secondaries for anyone wondering

IS from the Chicagoland area. Verified 7/17. Just got an email about receiving my primary, and the review process for a secondary can take up to 6 weeks. They also said typically 1 in 3 applicants get their secondary.

I am part of the Lincoln Scholars Program (rural track) and even we have multiple students from the Chicago area so you have nothing to worry about

Has anyone heard from them since receiving the initial email confirming primary submission?

Hopefully, they'll be sending out secondaries in the next few weeks. According to CycleTrack, some have already received them.

Just got this email:
"The Admissions Committee of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has now completed its assessment of your application to the entering class of 2025. The decision by the Committee has resulted in your status as a SCREENERS ALTERNATE.

Applicants placed into this category have not been selected to receive the Supplementary Application at this time. Although this alternate status does not give you a high probability of acceptance, please keep your file current with updated grade reports and other information pertinent to your academic progress. In the event that you are reactivated for a supplemental application, we will contact you at your most recent AMCAS email address. A final decision on your application will most likely be made by the end of the calendar year. "

Oh well

Not a rejection though, gang.

Are you IS/southern/rural IL?

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna end up in the same boat so I feel for ya. If you don't mind me asking, when did you receive the email from them titled "SIUCOM Application Acknowledgment" and did you receive any other emails after that saying that you were actually under review? Thanks.

I kinda interpreted the email as a soft rejection, but was there a different result that was a more definite "hard" rejection?

Also, I'm from the north suburbs of Chicago.

North suburbs is probably the reason for the rejection, this school very much wants doctors who they know will stay in the area.

I got a secondary today. Generic email. The prompts haven't changed, so I've pasted them from last year's thread.

I'm from northwest Illinois but have lived in central Illinois for 5 years. Have also shadowed adjunct SIU faculty in rural settings (not sure if they are screening to the level where this matters).

The mission of SIU School of Medicine is to assist the people of central and southern Illinois in meeting their health care needs through education, patient care, research and service to the community.
  • Preference is given to established residents of central and southern Illinois who intend to practice medicine in the state.
  • Applicants should have a good foundation in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
  • Applicants are expected to demonstrate facility in writing and speaking the English language.
  • Preference is given to applicants who will have earned a baccalaureate degree by the time of matriculation.
  • Preference is given to applicants who have had sufficient recent academic activity to demonstrate potential for successful completion of medical school.
  • Although the Admissions Committee establishes no quotas, active efforts are made to recruit qualified applicants from groups who have been under-represented in the medical profession.
1. SIU School of Medicine uses a holistic approach to identify students who best fulfill its mission: to assist the people of central and southern Illinois in meeting their health care needs through education, patient care, research and service to the community. In what ways do you believe you would contribute to SIU’s mission and what barriers have you overcome in your life’s circumstances to reach this point in applying to medical school? Please limit your response to 300 words or less.

2. Tell us about your lived experiences that will make you a better physician? Please limit your response to 300 words or less.

3. To be successful as a student at SIU School of Medicine and as a practicing physician, you must be flexible and committed to cultivating and employing critical interactive and learning skills. Describe your experiences that demonstrate: contribution in a teamwork setting; engagement in self-directed and life-long learning (taking personal initiative to identify and address your learning goals and needs); and exposure to the small group tutorial process used in a problem-based learning environment. Please limit your answer to 500 words or less.

4. If you have previously applied to SIU School of Medicine, please describe how you feel you have strengthened your credentials since that application. Please limit your answer to 300 words or less.

5. Have you ever been convicted of a felony? Have you ever been convicted with a misdemeanor other than a minor traffic offense? Have you ever been charged with a felony or a misdemeanor other than a minor traffic offense, or with misconduct on any college campus? If you answered 'YES' to any of the three preceding questions, please explain the relevant circumstances. (no character limit given)

+1 Secondary, Central IL resident. Received yesterday.

Is it still true that they interview almost everyone who submits a secondary?

Seeing these recent IS secondaries is giving me hope as someone who's been waiting since June......

Screeners alternate from the Chicagoland suburbs area low SES 🙁

Did y'all receive the secondaries within that 6 week timeframe initially provided? I'm approaching 8 and haven't heard a word either way.

I'm in the exact same situation. Kinda tempted to reach out, but paranoid that the moment I do, they'll send a rejection email 😭😭

Is anyone still waiting for a secondary past the 8-week mark? I'm slowly beginning to lose hope.

Small update. Very happy to report that after sending an email asking about my application status, I received a secondary within the hour!!

Mind if I ask who you emailed? I'm also past the 8-week mark.

Will the first wave of acceptances go out all at once? Or over the course of a few days?

does anyone know when they started interviews? in my II email, they said they're only scheduling for jan 6th to feb 28th.
