2024-2025 Toledo Secondary Essay Prompts: (1, 3 and 4 required, 2 & 5 if applicable)

1. We invite you to briefly discuss any connections you may have to the region of Northwest Ohio. (500 words)

2. If you feel you have any aspects of your record that may potentially negatively influence your application to our medical school, we encourage you to use this space to discuss them in order to provide the admissions committee with further context about your application. (Examples of possible topics include MCAT scores lower than our class average, low grades, withdrawn course, institutional action/student conduct violation.) (500 words)

3. The Admissions Committee considers a wide variety of factors in evaluating applicants, including fit between applicants and our program’s mission, goals, and culture. In the essays below, we invite you to share information about yourself with regard to two aspects of our program. We encourage you to provide information and insights that may not be easily gleaned from other aspects of your medical school application. In responding to the essay prompts below, you should interpret the questions to the best of your ability.

One of the AAMC Core Competencies for entering medical students involves cultural competence. The competency involves several distinct domains, including:

a. Demonstrating knowledge of socio-cultural factors that affect interactions and behaviors;
b. Showing an appreciation and respect for multiple dimensions of diversity;
c. Recognizing and acting on the obligation to inform one's own judgment;
d. Engaging diverse and competing perspectives as a resource for learning, citizenship, and work;
e. Recognizing and appropriately addressing bias in selves and others;
f. Interacting effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.


Discuss a specific experience from your life that you feel demonstrates your level of competence in one of the above domains. (Clearly indicate which of the six domains above that you are responding to.) As part of your discussion, explain how you feel this experience will impact your future contribution to the culture of diversity and inclusion at The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences and later in your career as a physician. (600 words)

Possible topics might include, for example: your biggest lessons and insights from the pandemic; creative ways in which you were able to serve your community during the crisis; hardships you may have faced as a result of the virus or quarantine. (You will have an opportunity to specifically discuss impacts to your coursework/grades in a separate item.) (600 words)

What if we don't have any connections to Ohio for the first question?
 
I’m pretty sure that’s skewed due to majority of out of state are coming from Michigan
i know someone going into the incoming m1 class and they had no ties to ohio (from what i know) and only lived on the west coast/southwest

Just got an email that they forgot to add the "Financial Aid" tab in the secondary application. If you submitted the secondary before it got fixed, you will have to go back in and answer some residency questions on the AMP site and resubmit. Unsure if this applies to everyone's secondary before today or whenever it got fixed, but it happened to mine.
 
I know someone has already asked this question, but I do not have any ties to Ohio. I live in the south and was wondering if I should use that space to talk about why I want to attend UToledo or should leave it blank. I need insight into what applicants with no ties are doing.
 
what if i have ties with northeast ohio. lmaoo the way they specifically asked about northwest

So are we really writing 600 words for some of these prompts or is 350 enough😩 like do they even want to read 600 words?

I decided to use it as a spot to describe my fit for the school and my ability to adapt despite my lack of ties to Ohio. Especially since it's not an optional question. Hopefully, that helps

When applying for their early assurance program I believe they had it at 500 for the diversity and adversity. They moved it up this year, so I am guessing they do.
 
Anyone apply MD-PhD get an MD interview? I am confused! Just received an MD interview but haven't heard anything regarding my MD-PhD app. Does this mean I'm rejected from MD-PhD?

Hi everyone, returning to see if anyone could provide some insight as to what to expect in Toledo's 2hr MMI? Is it pretty formal, or is there a calmer vibe and friendly interviewers? Thank you! It is appreciated.

Everyone that interviewed me was very friendly, but it's formal in that there is a strict schedule where you get (iirc sorry it was last year lol) 8 minutes to answer the question and if you get done early they request that you end the session with that interviewer so there wasn't much time/space for pleasantries. I would say it was nervewracking like any MMI because it's 8 straight interviews but you do get time to breathe between each one and everyone was very nice.

Does anyone know what Toledo means when they say you have 2 weeks to either accept or decline their admissions offer? Would it be binding? I thought we don't have to pick a school till April 30th? There are other schools I haven't heard from yet so I would not be willing to commit to attending, but I don't want to decline unless it it necessary.

Not binding at this point- you are allowed to hold more than one school until April.

edited to add, @JaggedTuba and others, here are the guidelines for handling your AMCAS offers if you have more than one.
It's pretty long, so read it through a few times to digest it all.
In reality, most people do accept their first offer while waiting to hear from other schools.
If your first offer ends up being your only offer, you will not regret doing this 👍

Is the format 8 MMI interviews, and they give you 8 minutes per question to discuss with your interviewer (2 hours total) ?
