2024-2025 UCLA (Geffen)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I agree. its very slow .. I was hoping for some movement myself..

And I was wondering since morning about the chances here...

1) With April 30th deadline .. whoever had multiple acceptances and decided not to go UCLA, MUST have withdrawn by now.
UCLA Admission should know those numbers by now and should have given those to Waitlist already. Isn't it ?
I counted btw sdn and cycle track for those numbers to be <20. (agree not everyone would have updated in the forums)

2) People still holding UCLA acceptance in "plan to enroll" are those who are waiting for some other school's waitlist results.
These numbers may not be that high and we are waiting for them to make their decisions soon.

3) Lastly, some of those who got an A from Waitlist on 4/30, would have rejected the offer.. (like I see one person above did that.
Again, these numbers will be low..

So whoever is still in waitlist bucket, are dependent only on #2 and #3 above. right ? This is making me more and more less hopeful at this time..
maybe they’re just monitoring the yield for now based on the people they just took off? im not sure if maybe they want to be extra careful not to overfill?

I wonder why nothing was sent today :-( it just feels like movement is so much slower this year
38 new people joined the group chat since April 30 so expect the movement to be much slower and not everyone accepted has joined the groupme or accepted the acceptance offer. I predict that around 50 were offered April 30-May 1 and more will come off gradually (once every week or two weeks).

Last year, 376 were offered acceptances for a class of 176 so a lot of waitlist movement (a reason being that the financial aid packages were trash last year and might have been better than this years). I think a third to half of the current M1 class was from the waitlist. People will be coming off the waitlist til probably late July tbh so have patience folks!

On a side note, I think with the current economic situation and the current government trying to attack/get rid of things like Grad Plus Loans, PSLF, and other loan forgiveness programs and increase also loan interest rates, I think it is safe to assume that yield will be a bit lower or similar to last year's cohort at DGSOM.

Also, if you are a newly accepted student, please feel free to reach out. I ended up decommitting here for financial reasons but did extensive research and contemplation on the school and would love to answer any questions! (I hope I am still an honorary Bruin and hope to be back for an away rotation!)

Did all of those 38 students confirm that they would be attending? Also thank you so much! Your responses have always been super informative and helpful.

Last year's thread suggests that all top of wl people + a few regular wl people got offers on/around this time, is there any reason to expect something different this year?

That I am uncertain since a lot of them joined today. But I think individuals have til like 5/7 or so to decide. Some are visiting this weekend and others will probably wait til they receive fin aid packages or at least have conversations with the fin aid office, and there are M1s there to answer questions. For some, I think this might be their first A of the cycle or their highest ranked acceptance while others it might be a completely different story. Also, some of the admitted students from the first few rounds are also on WLs at other top/desirable places so a lot of them can potentially decline in the following weeks too. As probably seen by the chaos of this cycle, anything and everything can happen so just be patient.

I just feel like they’ve been operating so different this cycle compared to previous cycles. Minimal post interview rejections sent thus far, slow WL movement, mysterious UID assignment, etc. Certainly makes it more unpredictable

Does anyone have more info about the graduate housing offered here? what pricing is like / how it all works just got off the WL and am considering feasibility / cost.

So the two main/popular graduate housing options for med students are Weyburn and the Boulevard. The rent prices are subsidized by UCLA and depend on which type of apartment you get (rates found here: 2025-2026 Single Graduate Housing Contract Rates). The Bouelvard is also the more sought after apartment since it has a walk-in laundry and there is a shuttle that picks med students up and drops them off at Geffen Hall (around a 10 minute drive). Link to more Boulevard housing info: The Boulevard Apartments

Weyburn is a 15 minute walk from Geffen Hall and info on it can be found here: Weyburn Terrace Apartments
Rates for it here: 2025-2026 Single Graduate Housing Contract Rates
(Weyburn's price range is $1650-1860 so not too different based on apartment type)

Your placement is decided by a lottery and there is a housing application that you need to fill out (it opened up on May 1) and usually most med students get housing as we are prioritized (sometimes there is a waitlist). Students are allowed grad housing for only 3 years and would have to find outside housing for the 4th year.

Also med students are eligible for Cali Fresh (something similar to SNAP/food stamps) and students usually receive around $290-300/month for groceries and I think everyone is eligible, so please use this!

Hope this helps!

thank you SOOO much this is fantastic!

Happy to help! Also, not sure if you are in the Groupme yet, but there are also great stuff in there as well such as documents and posts from M1s. I recommend reading the whole chat from beginning to end for other insights into the school (also helps you get a feel/vibe of the admitted students who are so amazing) and for filling out stuff. It shouldn't take too long (3-5 minutes max)

If this were the case, wouldn't waitlist movement be on pace with or faster than last year? Last year's thread has multiple people not top of wl receiving As on May 2nd, which seems not to be the case this year (I could be wrong/they could not be on sdn). I'm trying to speculate on what makes this year different from last year.

Also, thanks for all of the information you're posting! Certainly will make it easier on anyone deciding rn

Yeah that’s what I’ve been wondering too! It’s like this year they’re using an entirely different playbook. There’s certainly something going on internally that we don’t know about. My assumption is maybe they don’t want to risk overfilling? I’m not sure if maybe that was an issue last year where they released decisions too quickly? Who knows.

Yeah looking through the past threads, I think the top / regular WL is new as of 23-24 (22-23 thread has people saying UCLA didn't disclose their position on the WL). IIRC MSAR says 177 matriculated last year, which would only be overfilled by 2 seats if the desired class size is 175. Last year had a number of reg WL people get As Apr 30 - May 2, and I'm assuming all top of WL people got As then as well. Wonder what's different this year? Speculating here - it may be that more people are included in the 'top of WL'

Regarding UID: since getting pulled from WL (near top designation) and committing, having the UID has been super important in accessing the myUCLA portal, getting financial aid info (only loans lmao), and completing housing application. I got my UID number on the portal the Friday before getting pulled on Wednesday, April 30th. I hate to fuel speculation, but it seems like the UID is really important in getting things moving with admissions. My UID was also provided in my acceptance email.

That’s actually really helpful to know. It’s almost like they knew ahead of time that they would be releasing acceptances slowly so they wanted to have the UID’s prepared in advance. Especially since students only have 5 days. I mean obviously having a UID ≠ getting accepted since it still depends on if they have space available

Has anyone been successful in getting UCLA to match a peer institution’s merit scholarships? I know it was possible for the past year’s but interested to hear any successful stories from this year + how you went about it. Please DM, TIA.

In my meeting with financial aid they said they are unable to since they already awarded all of their scholarships. I thought since the scholarship came from a higher ranking school I would have some luck with them matching it but the answer for me was no. From what I’ve seen in the group me and speaking to a few people, it looks like the full tuition scholarships went to PRIMELA students but if someone got a scholarship that isn’t prime please correct me.

Some of my friends and I also received some small scholarships from them, and we were not Prime-LA or even California natives. It was around a 20-25% tuition scholarship. I had substantial scholarships from 5 other places and they were not willing to match at all lol. With federal funding cuts and Geffen not renewing his financial commitment to DGSOM, the school and its students are at a tough spot unfortunately.

Apparently, the admit.org people are now basing [or heavily basing] the entire rank list on "match list strength". I have a transcript saved from someone on their website corroborating this in case they try to fake news me. The algorithm they are using is completely different. New MSAR data had not even been released.

They are also seemingly treat the top 50 different than others in this algorithm.

I think it is very low-quality of them and borderline nefarious of them to have released updated rankings while not telling the general public that they are basically using an entirely new algorithm.

Their new algorithm is flawed imo, and I think hurts west coast schools because west coast residencies are ranked lower across the board on doximity.

Their new algorithm assumes that all people essentially just seek the best ranked residency possible regardless of geographic location, which is just simply not true lol

Again, I do not know why they released these rankings right before impressionable students make decisions while also not sharing they changed how they are doing it.

They are not factoring ANYTHING [or nearly anything] but match list for the top 50, but that seems to be clear to no one. I had to ask them on their chat feature for them to tell me they decided to make this change. I.e yield, research funding, number of low SES students, etc. none of that is in their rankings anymore lol [according to the person I talked to on their website]

Source:
02:45 PM | J------ from Admit: For the top 50 schools, we didn’t incorporate stats - we based their algo largely on the past 2 years of match lists (and next year will be based on 3 years, so larger sample size)

02:46 PM | J------ from Admit: Match lists are the most indicative of a med school’s strength (as long as the sample size of years is broad enough)

02:46 PM | J------ from Admit: Because it includes factors like regional connections, specialty strength (like UMiami having very strong nsgy and ophtho programs), etc

02:55 PM | J------ from Admit: As for a disclaimer - we’re trying to move away from publicly posting in places just so that it doesn’t feel like we’re trying to moderate/sway discussion

02:55 PM | J------ from Admit: We want it to be open - if people want to discuss admit they can, and if not then not

02:57 PM | J------ from Admit: At the end of the day, it wouldn’t make sense to use number of low or high SES accepted students as a control. We did that last year because we had to adjust for MCAT scores

03:00 PM | J------ from Admit: Measuring the ending outcomes with match lists just made the most sense for this year

03:14 PM | J------- from Admit: Match lists are just the most ironclad way to have rankings right now, and they’re an improvement on last year

03:15 PM | J------ from Admit: And the best part about Match lists, they include factors that couldn’t be ranked before such as prestige, program director strength, specialty strength, etc
Even USNWR rankings (to a lesser degree now since they are just Tier 1, 2, 3 and 4) are flawed because stats averages they use such as the MCAT average disproportionately hurt state public medical schools that have rural campuses. These schools for obvious reasons cannot publicly release averages for each campus and the lower stats of matriculants to the rural campuses brings down their overall average.

Yes I did, another scholarship from the school, and the final year tuition waived through the PRIME program
Thanks. I think Dr Moreno said that the masters year free, and a base 20k scholarship/year was provided for every student, but It's great to hear that they are providing additional scholarships. Maybe they'll try to match aid if I get off the WL.
