Accepted, Fall 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is that 120 seats for the program you applied to or 120 seats in general? Either way, it really is an incredibly small program and I would not feel bad at all! Congratulations on all your other acceptances!!!

I believe it's 120 seats in total. 120 seats per MPH program would make Yale a pretty big public health school!

Hello! I have been following this thread for a few weeks now as I anxiously await my own decisions. Here is my info for those who want to know:

Undergrad: 3.71
Postgrad: 3.86
GRE: 570V, 660Q, 4.5A
I have six years work experience in maternal and child health
Lots of volunteer work including 7 months in Sub Saharan Africa Peds HIV clinic
2 years in AmeriCorps

Applied: UW Global Health (local for me), UNC MCH, UCB MCH
Admissions-UNC
Waitlisted-UW (with favorable position on the list, whatever that means😕)
Waiting: UCB

My questions for those who want to share:
Assuming I get a choice between UW and UNC, is one better the other? I want to work internationally in maternal and child health when finished and UW is a stronger international program, but lacks the strong MCH background. UNC has the strong MCH part, but it would be harder to get the international experience. Tuition expenses also factor into this as UW would be in state tuition and UNC would be out of state.

2nd question: For those who have heard from UW, has anybody received acceptance into the global health program? Waitlist? Rejections?

Thanks,
M

Hi Melissa,

I also applied to the Global Health program and was waitlisted a few days after my phone interview. It also read "favorable position". Did you have an interview before the wait listing?
Not everyone that was admitted will enroll there, so I have a very positive disposition of being there at the end. The deadline as I was told by the admissions people for candidates to decline or accept is mid April, so we should know our fate by then, hopefully, for the best.

Hey!

I was waitlisted at UW´s global health program too - with a "favorable position", whatever that means. I guess they will let us know sometime around April - though my understanding is that with waitlists there is movement until August, as people get accepted off other schools waitlists and give up spots that they have commited to.

Wow it seems like a lot of people (3/3 of the UW responses) were waitlisted...where are all the admitted people?? I had an in person interview a couple of weeks ago and am now waiting...Wish I would hear before April though!

It's actually ~ 120 per class in the MPH program. My class has 118, but it's funny: it doesn't feel nearly that big.

My first choice was Health Policy & Management. Second was Epidemiology.

From what I've gathered, Columbia releases decisions from Wed - Fri through email and will continue doing so until sometime in March. I submitted at the mid-December and my application was under review beginning December 29. I expected to hear sooner from them, but now I'm flat out worrying that I got rejected.

Hey - How did you know that it was "under review"? Did the status change to that on the application site? Thanks

EDIT: ok I see someone already asked that question....can't figure out how to delete this

Congrats to you and all those waitlisted/accepted to UW's Global Health program! I was rejected, unfortunately. I wasn't super surprised about that because they emphasized how important it was to have substantial international work experience (I have some, but not a ton), and it is such a small/competitive program. Still a bit disappointing though. I have been accepted to Columbia's Global Health program though, and am waiting to hear from Tulane and Berkeley. So I at least have a good option!

A little confused...Per class as in per year? Meaning that there are 240 people enrolled in any two years at Yale, when you combine all grad students enrolled in all MPH tracks?

Make that 4 waitlisters...also with a "favorable position." I'm not sure if I feel better or just more perplexed after seeing these responses!

Edit: I was also notified of my waitlist position about a week after my interview....I applied PCMI track, I don't know if that makes any difference, but it was still a global health MPH.

Berkeley's SPH Visit Day is Monday March 7. I got the email about visit day about a week after I was accepted.

I feel like I haven't heard of many people seriously considering Berkeley on this forum...are you out there?! I was admitted to epi/biostats and I'm really leaning towards accepting.

Thank, sch86 (and phmandsw) for this info! It sounds like it's school-wide and not department-specific; is that how it was described?

I'm definitely seriously considering Berkeley. It's in my top 2 (with UNC), but I feel like a visit to the school would definitely get a better feel for what's going to be the best fit!

Anybody else getting anxious waiting for financial aid packages? I hope I'm not terribly disappointed and have to pay for my MPH with just loans. If that's the case, I might consider deferring and saving for a year.

Also, for those accepted to Pitt, did you get an actual acceptance package or just a letter? All I've gotten is an acceptance letter. I'm pretty surprised I didn't get more.

Hey ReproHlthPlz,

Unfortunately I don't have any answers for you on that one (still waiting myself), but I couldn't help but notice that you're from Columbus. What are your thoughts on OSU's MPH program? My impression from a brief visit was that it is a pretty good program (at least for health promotion), though few students have much work experience.

Would be great to hear your thoughts! Good luck w/ the fin. aid packages...

It's me. No word from 5 schools I was admitted, including Pitt. I only received the acceptance letter form Pitt like you.

Hey Everyone! I've been reading for a bit and decided to post because I was also waitlisted at UW (Global Health) with favorable position on the waitlist. I had a phone interview but it was very informal. I'm not sure the interviewer had seen my application materials beforehand.

I guess that makes 5 of us waitlisted so far! Does anyone know how many are accepted into the GH program and how many enroll?

Here are my stats:
GRE: V-600, Q-750, AWA-4
BS and MS degrees (lots of math and science)
RPCV - 2 years int'l experience
3 years public health experience in US with int'l populations

Applied: UW (GH), Tulane (IHD), UNC (HBHE), Columbia (PopFam/GH), Johns Hopkins (MPH)

Accepted: Tulane, UNC, Columbia, Johns Hopkins
Waitlisted: UW

For those who have heard from UW (waitlisted/etc.), do you hear by email or postal mail? I heard they are deciding on HPM concentration today...so wondering how long I have to wait!

Well, I honestly don't know too much about the program first hand because I never considered it. They don't have faculty that do research in my area of interest (reproductive health), nor am I a fan of Columbus (but many people are!). However, I do have a good friend that is about to graduate with her MPH in health behavior and health promotion from OSU. She absolutely adores it (she was actually the person that planted the idea in my head to pursue an MPH). It has a pretty good reputation and the faculty are supposed to be pretty nice.

It's me. No word from 5 schools I was admitted, including Pitt. I only received the acceptance letter form Pitt like you.

We're in this wait together. Keeping fingers crossed!

To all of you UW GH people- While I was looking through UW's website for PhD programs I came across this little fact about the GH MPH program...
2010, 296 applications for 30 openings

I don't know if you guys have seen this but I just wanted to put it out there. I think its a great thing to even get waitlisted fo a program this competitive.

For those who have heard from UW (waitlisted/etc.), do you hear by email or postal mail? I heard they are deciding on HPM concentration today...so wondering how long I have to wait!

I received an email about being waitlisted 8 days after my interview - about a week after they made the decisions. Good luck!

I totally just got my acceptance email from Brown MPH with 1/4 merit scholarship... I'm way excited!

accepted: brown, emory (bshe), michigan (bhhe), tamu (msph is bs), uthouston, dartmouth

waiting: hopkins, yale, columbia

Congrats! Which school are you leaning towards?

Checked SOPHAS this morning and saw an acceptance from UT-Houston (MPH epi). I submitted my application on 1/25.

Applied: Emory, Tulane, UT-Houston, BU, USF (all MPH epi or global epi)
Accepted: Emory (2nd choice - MPH epi), Tulane, UT-Houston
Rejected: Emory (1st choice - MPH global epi)
Waiting: BU, USF

No word on scholarships/financial aid. I know Emory nominates students for scholarships in late March. Does anyone know about scholarships at Tulane or UT?

Checked SOPHAS, admitted to UTHSC Houston for MPH in Healthcare Management

Applied on 2/8

Accepted: UCLA, Columbia, UT

Rejected: Yale, Harvard

Still waiting: NYU, Hopkins

Congrats! Which school are you leaning towards?
I'm not 100% sure yet... Right now it's definitely between Brown and Emory, but a Hopkins or Columbia acceptance may change all that 🙂

Alright, finally got an email from Harvard today. So I've heard back from all my schools!

GRE: Verbal 660, Quantitative 740, Writing 5
GPA: 3.6 at a liberal arts college, science major
Experience: no work experience, but have done research for the past 1.5 years on a related topic

All schools I applied to are in the environmental health track.

Applied: Harvard MS (80 credit), Columbia MPH, Yale MPH, NYU School of Medicine (MS)
Accepted: Harvard, Columbia, Yale, NYU School of Medicine
Rejected: None

For everyone still waiting on decisions, good luck! 🙂

Congrats awkwardturtles!!!

So begins another round of Harvard emails. 🙂

Good luck to all of you who are waiting to hear!!! Now have to decide between 4 other schools. UGH

Has anyone heard back (rejections/acceptance) from the SM in Society, Human Development and Health track at Harvard??

It looks like most people are hearing back only from the MPH program.

Almost 10 years work and volunteer experience.

And for HealthEdu - the Berkeley Public Health admitted students day on March 7 seems to be a general one - not for any one specific program

I got an acceptance from HSPH MPH Health and Social Behavior concentration today by e-mail!!! 🙂

I've been following the forum for a while, but this is my first post. I'm anxiously awaiting news from Harvard SM Global Health and Johns Hopkins MSPH in International Health! I didn't hear anything from Harvard this weekend, so I guess I'll be waiting on pins and needles until next weekend?

Accepted: Emory, Global Health (interviewed on the phone for merit scholarship consideration); Columbia, SMS Global Health Track- 10k/year merit scholarship
Waiting: Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Tulane, BU
Rejected: None

How many people have heard back from Harvard Global Health and Population for the SM degree? I've only seen a couple I think?

Hey I too am waiting to hear back from Harvard for the SM in Global Health.

If this makes you feel any better I recall seeing acceptances for the HPM program start streaming in the 18th, but people also received acceptances on the 25th for the same programs. I'm also very nervous, but still remaining optimistic.

For Reference Purposes:

Acceptances: GW (MPH in Global Health ) , Yale (MPH in Health Policy), JHU (MSPH in International Health)
Waiting on: Harvard (SM in Global Health & Population)

Rejections: None

Has anyone else heard anything about merit scholarship nominations at Emory? I'm wondering if I should still be keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks, that does give me hope knowing that Harvard's whole department doesn't send out messages all on the same day. As far as JHU- is that also likely the case? When did you hear from JHU for the MSPH International Health?

I saw my decision for JHU available on the application site on 2/15. I'm not sure how/when the Hopkins AdCom makes decisions, only a few people on here seemed to have applied for the MSPH.

For whatever reason it doesn't seem like JHU decisions come in "massive waves" as we are seeing with Harvard. At least it appears that way in this forum.

Finally, an acceptance!

Accepted: UIC
Waiting: Yale, Tulane

Stats:
GRE 1140 AW 4.5
Undergrad GPA: 3.5
Grad GPA: 4.0
7 years working at an int'l NGO
RPCV
No direct public health background

Now, if I could just hear back from the other two...

I think I can officially say that Harvard has rejected me, no e-mail yet but why else would they have sent me the e-mail below:
Dear Student,

You are receiving this email because you have applied to a degree at the Harvard School of Public Health. Although you may not have received a decision yet with regards to your degree application, I am writing you today to inform you about our Summer Session.

You are welcome to request participation into the Summer Session for Public Health Studies whether or not you are accepted into a degree program at the Harvard School of Public Health. Simply email me back if you are interested in participating. Please keep in mind that your participation in the Summer Session has no bearing on your acceptance into a degree program at HSPH. However, courses taken during the summer can be transferred towards your degree once you become a degree candidate.

The deadline to respond by email is March 18

I just got the same email. I think it's just a generic email that the school sends to everyone. That would be really silly if it was some cryptic way of saying "Yep, you are most likely rejected; however you can still be semi-associated with us by taking some summer classes."

However, it's a bit frustrating to be anticipating a decision only to recieve this summer session info email

I have received that email as well and I have not received a response from them yet. I didn't take it as a sign of rejection but I actually just thought they sent it to all students in their database. Hopefully I am not wrong...

Don't worry yet! I was accepted to the SD in Epi at HSPH and just received the same email too.
