Any one else applying to Texas A&M c/o 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I left a voicemail, but I don't like doing that either. I want to call and check that they received it, but I am not sure when there will be someone back in the office, because Yolanda's voicemail says she is out until Jan. 3. I sent her an email about it (I got the "out of office" auto reply), but I figured she would get it when she gets back.

Hey all!

If anyone needs a free place to crash for their interview day, hit me up via PM 🙂 I'd be happy to host you. I'm a first year anatomic pathology resident, so while I don't see a whole lot else of the hospital (lol), I would be happy to tell you about the area, etc. I don't have an extra bed, but if you bring a sleeping bag you'll have your own room (my office) and bathroom, and I can drive you to and from the school as needed since I work 8-6 anyway.

Good luck! Gig em! 😉

So....has anyone else been able to get ahold of someone in admissions to verify that they got your interview confirmation? I left a voicemail the day I got the invite to "confirm" my interview, but I haven't been able to talk to anyone to make sure they got the voicemail. I even emailed Yolanda, but no response.

I haven't gotten ahold of anyone either. I'm just really hoping they got my message.

Is anyone else starting to get really nervous?
My interview is the 15th at 3:25. Does anyone else have the same time?

I can say that I am definitely starting to get nervous! Especially since the letter said that the interview would take about an hour! Ugh, I thought 30 minutes was long enough to torture us!!! 😳

Mine is scheduled for the 14th at 9:25am...

Well I'm getting more nervous by the second, and I'm jealous that you three are in a group together! 🙂 I assume the order/groups are totally random since the whole point of MMI is to be extremely objective, but I still can't help but think that going first thing in the morning on the first day is going to suck. It seems like they must be scoring responses against each other to some extent, so going at the very beginning seems bad. 🙁

Have you guys done much preparation for the interview? Back when I thought it was going to be a traditional interview, I was ready to practice tons, but now I feel totally unprepared. :scared: I'm scared that I'm going to be so nervous that I can't even form a complete sentence! AHHH!

Anyway, sorry for whining, but hopefully you guys can relate! I'm heading to College Station tomorrow evening, crossing my fingers for everyone! :luck:

Good luck everyone! Don't worry too much about being nervous. They expect you to be extremely nervous! Feel free to ask any of us questions if you happen to run into vet students. We all (should) have name tags on so it's hard to miss us!

I am basically preparing like I would for a traditional interview. I figured there might be traditional questions at some of the stations, and that there is no way to prep for the non-traditional (ask about a scenerio) stations.

Does anybody know what will be involved in the luncheon? Is it just a lunch with other applicants, question and answer session, etc.?

I was wondering that too. My husband is coming down to CS with me and we were thinking freebirds for lunch, but I don't want to miss anything important

My hunch is that nothing important will take place during the luncheon. Since interviews are running from 7am to 7pm, I bet lots of people are skipping it. But maybe one of the current students knows something?

I will probably miss it unless I hear otherwise. I expect to be drained of all energy and adrenaline by well before 1pm.

Traditionally they had the interviews spread out over a month, so I don't think they have had luncheons in the past. However, I could be wrong. I didn't go to one though, so I wouldn't worry too much if you can't/don't want to go.

I don't think they ever had lunch's in the past. A Q&A with vet students during the lunch would be a good idea though. I don't know for sure if they're doing it or not. I didn't see anything sent through e-mail but the adcomms could've just handpicked some vet students they know well or something, or the e-mail was sent to upperclassmen who have more than one semester of vet school life under their belts.

tl;dr: I dunno. I can try to ask tomorrow though if I remember.

But if it's not, I'll suggest it for next year. They did it at Ohio State's and it really helped keep my mind off 'oh **** I have an interview in THIRTY MINUTES....TWENTY MINUTES....TEN MINUTES...I can still make a break for it..."

Words of inspiration, which I recall receiving as a pre-vet and meaning little at the time because it's 'easy for you to say'. 😀 But really, don't be nervous. All the adcomms I know are very nice individuals and they just want to get to know you as a person and how you'll react. Be yourself, dress nice, and don't play with jewelry in the interview (if you wear a ring, nix it if you're a twister). They expect a certain amount of nervousness and are there to let you INTO vet school, not keep you out of it! They're on your side, as much as it might seem they're not lol.

Also remember, this is the first time A&M's done the MMI, so the interviewers are just as lost as you are, so there's a margin of error there in and of itself.

Oh and if you have an answer, do not change your answer. Stick to that answer til hell and high water! They sometimes like to try to get you to flip-flop but you need to keep your resolve. Just say something like "well, from my current understanding, I believe X, but if new evidence came out supporting Y, I would have to review my position" or something similar if they're pressing you to change or keep bringing up 'what ifs'. They like the 'good cop, bad cop' set up some times.

just wanted to say good luck to everyone tomorrow and saturday! my interviews at 11:25am!!! AHH!!

It's over! I survived and you guys will, too! 🙂

Good luck everyone! :luck: :xf:

I was one of the early interviews too. The MMIs aren't too bad and in my opinion there's not quite enough time to say what you want, so I recommend trying to be concise 😛 good luck everyone!

If you are a dude, I think you were in my tour group. 🙂

ATX00 - how did the early/first time slot go? I know I was mentally exhausted by the time I got out!

I would just like to say that I agree with a similar thread (I think about VMRCM's MMI) that it is more stressful than the traditional interview. I do agree that it is probably more fair/objective, but I definitely didn't think it was "FUN" (as it was referred to during the pre-interview orientation!!) 😛

i totally agree. it was stressful. i just wish we had more time to look over the situations sometimes all i could do was read it over once or twice and fully understand what was going on and then it was time to go in. not to mention the complete BLANK expressions on the interviewers which were no help at all. i have no idea what they thought about my answers but i think thats the whole point lol!

I think going first was probably fine. If anything, maybe there's some benefit to going when the interviewers are still really fresh and not sick of hearing the same thing a million times. But to be perfectly honest, I have absolutely no clue how I did. I wish I could have watched some other people do it just so I'd have something to compare myself to, lol. 😳

I would definitely not call it "fun" either. 🙄

I agree. Some of the interviewers were totally straight-faced throughout, and gave off a vibe of "I AM JUDGING YOU EVERY SECOND!" ... and I know they were all technically judging us, but some of them were a lot friendlier about it than others.

Y'all got a handout of all the situations they'd be talking about prior?

I feel better that I'm not the only one that walked out afterwards like "Wuuuuhhh? What just happened??" (*big ball of stress*) Hopefully that means we did better than we think!:xf:

YES! I felt the same way. We only had enough time to understand the situation, and no time to think about it. Forget making notes on that paper!!!

Not a handout, but we had two minutes to review the scenario before we had to go into the room with the interviewers (each scenario was posted outside its respective room). It was supposed to give us time to "think", but there really wasn't enough time. I know that all MY thinking had to happen on the spot in the rooms (and I think that was probably the point....😡)

I definitely had the same vibe. I was on the red track (there are two tracks of interviewers so you've got people cycling through two sets of stations at any given time), and I noticed one station seemed stonefaced the entire time and never talked (I don't think I ever stopped talking for that one), about 2-3 were extremely friendly, and the rest were in the middle.

Really! I felt the same way. I also felt a little cheated since the first station I went to, I didn't hear them say we could look since I was just getting seated and they had kind of whispered it from across the room, so I wasn't able to read the whole thing before going in. For a few others, I wrote down notes but never referred to them. I think I took the eye contact a little too far and did an eye-to-eye deathlock for six minutes.

And ATX00, I think so too! We have the same name, right?

I just wanted to say congrats to everyone who interviewed over the weekend! does anyone know when we're supposed to hear the results by? Is it March like it has been in the past? Personally that seems like an eternity from now.

They told us spring break time, but I found out the last week of February. Since they got all of the interviews done in such a short period of time this year, you might hear back in early-mid February, but I would be surprised if it is any earlier than that.

My interview was the 15th at 3:25, red track at 5:10. Did anybody else have that one? I felt that the questions were pretty intense, but it was kinda fun and exhilarating to have to think so quickly on my feet! Anybody else feel the same??

Hey guys,

Congrats again to all that got interviews. I thought about y'all when I get this in an email that was sent to everyone in the vet school and thought I'd share. Apparently they were really pleased with how the process went and sounds like they'll be sticking with it for awhile. Again, nothing important but thought I'd share. Good luck!

Dear Colleagues,

While there are many successes in our college every day, I would like to alert you to the recent success of the MMIs (Multiple Mini-Interviews) conducted at our college. The instant Dr. Kenita Rogers learned about the effectiveness and benefits of this type of interview, she ran the idea past our forward thinking, progressive admissions committee and others, including TVMA. In nothing flat, the concept was adopted and participants were invited and trained. Last Friday and Saturday about 230 interviews of DVM applicants went off without a hitch. They ran two tracks with six stations each both days for 9-10 cycles each day. There were 45 practicing veterinarians who come in to help side-by-side with our own faculty.

There are so many people to thank - Kenita Rogers, Yolanda Brinkman, the student workers, Justin Flynn, faculty participants, practicing veterinarians, TVMA, Lauren Pluhar, and more.

Gig 'em!

Eleanor

Are you guys writing thank you notes?

I wasn't planning to because of the whole MMI setup, but after that email, I feel like I better do it. It seems pretty silly to me to write 12 identical, impersonal notes, but if everyone else is doing it... 🙄

I wasn't planning to, either. I figured it wouldn't mean much if their names weren't even on there, and I have to admit that I don't remember any of the names. 😳

I felt the same way. I would have with a traditional interview but I don't think I'm going to. I have a lot going on this week and I'm not sure I can get them sent soon enough. But, we'll see.

Now that interviews are done and I no longer have any control over my application, how am I suppose to concentrate on my classes and my life? I am so anxious to know final decisions! Does anyone think we will find out earlier this year because interviews were finished so much sooner? How are yall passing the time and not going crazy? I am sure this is a mixture of senioritis and uncontrollable anxiety about getting in, but I am really having a difficult time focusing on classes and passing the time. Any suggestions?

They said they're shooting for it, but I wouldn't hold my breath to be honest.

And remember, you still have to make a C to get into vet school if you're accepted. And if you're not accepted, you still need good grades for next time! 😀

My only suggestion is that you call A&M and ask when we'll hear from them, and then report back here and let us know what they say. 😀

I'm just trying to stay busy and not think about it because there's nothing I can do at this point. Focusing is definitely hard right now, but it probably will be even harder after we're accepted or rejected!

...and even HARDER if we are waitlisted! I was waitlisted last year, and the extended waiting period is the worst!

Oh gosh, I momentarily forgot about that possibility. You win. That must be the worst by far!

Well guys- I called admissions yesterday and they said that they may be sending letters out electronically first -like they did our interview letters. I was told by Yolanda that for sure the letters would be mailed out by mid March. Nerve racking :scared:.

And no, they didn't specify on when elecronic letters would be sent- if they are at all.

Thought I'd let you guys know since I know we are all desperate by this point in time.

i never thought waiting would be this hard. thanks so much for telling us what they said...hopefully they will send them out sooner than mid march. i wonder why they would send them electronically, i feel like they only did that for the interviews because we were on christmas break, hmm. well thanks again for the info!

Thank you for the update!

I was starting to get antsy myself. I have to say, though, mid-march is even later than it was last year! Ugh! :scared:

i was reading a thread from last year and people were hearing around feb. 26, so maybe, just maybe, we will hear this month! but i dont want to get my hopes up on finding out early...

hey i have a question...is it true they mail rejections a couple weeks after acceptances are mailed? that makes me a little nervous :/ i wonder why they would do that?

They told us mid March last year, but I got my acceptance letter on Feb. 28th (I think). So I would hope you would hear something by then. As far as the rejection letters, I'm not sure. Just consider yourself lucky if you live in/near College Station because you will get your letter first, unless of course they send them out electronically.

Sorry Gals, don't know if I added to your stress by telling you about the electronic letters. That's what the secretary told me. But Yolanda said she wasn't 100% sure on it.

I got an offer from Ross and I have to start booking my flight and stuff for the May start. So- the wait for A&M's letter is killing me! I'd rather not book a flight if you know what I mean 😉.
