Any one else applying to Texas A&M c/o 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are you by any chance a Red Raider? Just wondering- since you have Raider in your user name.

This was meant for RaiderTXGirl. Sorry.

Actually yes...I went to Texas Tech for undergrad 🙂

This waiting would be a lot easier if I didn't want this so much! Does anyone know about the waitlist statisitcs for TAMU?

I know a girl who got accepted off a low teens spot. She's a 3rd year now.

Beyond that, I dunno. Anything specific you were curious about?

I figure I probably won't get in this round, but that I might get waitlisted.... I'm IS and I hear that IS lists move much slower than OOS lists... I was just wandering how far they normally go down the list....

I think they move about 10 or so spaces on the IS wait list every year.

RE: RaiderTxGirl

Cool. I went to Tech too. I currently live here in Lubbock. But God willing- will be moving to College Station soon 😉

Aaaahhhh! I don't know how much longer I can wait for a decision before I go absolutely bonkers! Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. I'm getting so jealous of all the pre-meds and applicants who applied to other schools. If one more person asks me what I'm doing after graduation, I might have a complete mental breakdown.

Same here! Hang in there....February is almost over, so not too much longer!

Well, looking over threads from past years, acceptances could go out this week. In the past it seems that acceptances went out end of feb/ beginning of March. :xf:

Yah decisions went out pretty early last year compared to what it was the previous two times I applied. Getting a response wasn't even in my mind the day I got one. Quite the pleasant surprise.

I'm really hoping we'll hear good news this week! :xf:

I hope so. The suspense is literally killing me! At this point I want any answer, even if it is not the one I want....

Good luck future Aggies. I'll be teaching some of you in Path lab your second year. 😉 I would say "Don't let the worry drive you nuts", but I know how hard it is. I was the same way 4 years ago, it's awful! Keep your spirits up!

Yolanda called me 2 weeks ago with a question regarding one of my transcripts. Since I had her on the phone, I asked her when they thought decisions would be sent out. She told me they were still planning on mid-March 🙁

i think they always say mid march and that is when rejection letters go out. some years they've sent acceptances out sooner but who knows what they'll do this year. mid march is the standard answer every year from what i've heard

Who's ready to break in "Animal House"-style, and find the acceptance list?

just curious, what would be their reasoning be on sending out rejection letters after acceptance letters? it seems kind of mean to the people who dont receive letters right away and assume they got rejected. any thoughts?

All I can figure is it's done to let people down more gently. Like maybe by the time rejections go out, most people will already realize they're not getting good news. 🙁 It does seem kind of mean, but I think bad news is less shocking that way.

I think in honor of Texas Independence from Mexico Day we should all be put out of our terror and misery and be told whether or not we were admitted 😳

I'm planning the raid on the admission office. Just trying to find someone who can sell me the building's blueprints. :ninja:

If you get the plans let me know. I'm on board! 🙂

You know, the funny thing is that in the fishbowl there's a box on the wall that says "building plans" or some such. It's been left open in the past, and probably wouldn't be too terribly hard to get a hold of.

Just sayin'. I'll try and remember to get a picture of it tomorrow.

Soooooo today I got to talk to a rep at the health professions fair at my school, and he said that the decisions will get to us "very, very soon," and we should hear back within 10 days! I HOPE he took mailing time into consideration!

Excellent. The wheels are in motion. (It sounds a lot cooler if you imagine a Darth Vader voice)

hahaha yesss! Love the vader reference. I am literally dying here. Hopefully we get them this week or early next week. I cant take the suspense anymore. Good luck everyone!

Just curious, does anyone know what size envelope we should be looking for an acceptance vs. a rejection. I'm just wondering if I should be hoping for a big envelope or a little envelope?

I think someone said last year that acceptances were in big manila envelopes (I'm picturing full paper-sized?). I assume that rejections are standard envelope-sized and thin. Maybe a current student can confirm?

When things have been mailed out before, I got my letter in Austin the day after folks closer to CS, so I'm counting on you SDN'ers to give me 24 hours notice of when my letter will arrive. 😀

(But I'm stalking the mailman anyway just to be safe :scared:)

Having gotten one of the former and two of the latter, I can confirm.

Just thought I'd give yall a heads up. Our classes met with the administration yesterday and tuition will likely be going up starting in Fall of 2012 until it reaches $18,000/yr for IS students. 🙁 I also asked if they were going to increase class size for this year's applicant pool and they said no. The administration also said that they have not yet decided on the members of class of 2015 yet and will be working on it for the next few weeks. With the differential tuition issue popping up this week, I bet decisions will be delayed a little bit. I would probably plan on mid march right after or during spring break.

AAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHH I feel like I can't wait any longer! And after that rep told me I'd know soon 🙁 Oh well.. Thanks so much for letting us know, even if it's not good news!

Omg. Implosion is eminent. Feel like they are purposefully torturing us.

...and just to specify, that $18,000 is without ANY fees. So tack on another $4-5,000 a year for fees.

Hurray! Fun times all around...

Anyhow, since we've still got some time before acceptances go out, just a friendly reminder...

If you're not accepted, remember:
1-don%27t%2Bpanic.jpg

And carry a towel to wipe up tears/spilled drinks/injuries to others/etc.

If you get rejected, it's not the end of the world, though it'll seem it at the time. What you need to do is (1) don't tear up the letter and throw it away in frustration and (2) go out to dinner any how or something else that's fun to take your mind off it. When you get home, you'll be glad you followed (1) because the next part is very important: read the rest of the letter and at the bottom it'll have a phone number to call in the morning or whenever. That's the phone number to call Yolanda Brinkman to schedule an exit interview (or, more colloquially, a 'postmortem'). If you're in College Station you can go down to her office and sit with her one on one and go over it. If you're not, you can do it over the phone. It is some what frustrating though that this isn't done until May or June, so you only have about 3 months to *know* what you need to improve before next time.

Basically this is where they tell you how close you got to acceptance/waitlist in number of points and what you can do to improve.

Also remember that ANY changes help if it's likely to add points! The second time I applied I was, literally, 0.263 points (out of 250; or 0.1%) away from waitlist. I was 4.243 points (or 1.7%) shy of acceptance. The areas that hurt me most were:
- GPA which I really couldn't improve drastically at that point
- GRE which I could most certainly improve upon, if even a tiny bit
- 'Veterinary Experience Environment' which I lost 2 points on. Basically don't do all your experience in one setting or even in one clinic if possible.
- And I lost 17 points in my interview that time. It was out of 60 that year but the weight they apply to various sections is always changing. My first time the interview was only worth 40 points.

They'll break it down like that for you so you know, as close as possible, exactly what you need to do to improve on for next time. As you can see it comes down very close to the wire at times and there's drastic changes in positioning based upon just a few points. So I'd highly recommend doing the exit interview.

At least IS for TAMU isn't like UC-Davis. I was talking to some girls who applied there when I was up at WSU and they said they're tuition was up to 32K. But I could be lying, that was just the word on the street lol. I haven't looked it up to verify.

So I was looking at the OOS acceptance stats for TAMU and in '09 only 6 OOS kids went? Does anybody know if that's all they accepted or all that accepted their invites?

I've heard they normally accept 10 OOS and put a handful more on the waitlist, so I think only 6 must have accepted.

In the past, I think they've notified OOS applicants several weeks before now. They must be really behind if OOS hasn't heard anything yet. 🙁

They must be having a field day (and a bad one, like when it's rained the whole week prior hahaha) trying to figure out how to grade their questions from the new MMI system. Some of those situations were complex to start with and the "what ifs" that the interviewers threw in I'm sure took it to a whole new level.

kind of depressing topic...but what is everyone's plan if you don't get in this cycle? I have decided to stay in college station no matter what and improve my application here before next cycle. I was just curious to see everyones plan B. I am now dealing with the living crisis since all my roommates are graduating, is anybody else dealing with this type of stress? It is just building more and more the longer it takes them to make decisions, it feels like my life is on hold. Sorry for the minor panic attack, I just thought it would help if I knew what other people were doing/thinking right now.

Aw, don't panic 🙁 I haven't decided what I'm going to do next year either. I live with my bf in Houston, so if I don't get in, I'll be staying here. One of my profs offered me a job working in her lab, but at this point, that would only be for the summer unless she can get more grant money secured. I'm a planner, so it's driving me nuts that I don't know what I'll be doing after I graduate in 2 months. I'm looking into 1 year Master's programs, and I'm also keeping my eye out for animal-related jobs/paid internships. I'm not going to waste time, money, and effort filling out applications until I know what A&M's decision is. It'll be okay though! Only 1 more week in limbo, right?

Thanks so much for your response! you're right, we are in the home stretch now! but I am convinced they enjoy torturing us haha

If I don't get in I'm looking at it as an opportunity to take a break from a hard class load. I'd love to start immediately, but if not, I'm goof to visit my friends in Scotland, take a couple if classes if need be, and volunteer at a wildlife shelter while working in a vet clinic. Look at it as a way to spend a year doing things you love before starting a carreer you love.

If I don't get in this cycle, what I do will depend on what they tell me at my file review. I'm not sure if that will be more upper division classes, more diverse experience, or what. I won't graduate until the fall, so I'll unfortunately be taking classes no matter what. Ugh, I hope we all get in. This whole process is awful, and right now I can't imagine going through all this stress all over again. 🙁

I'd take that job, dependent on what it'd be doing. I worked in a clinical pathology job for a summer and learned quite a bit and I think it looked good on my application too, because not a lot of people have that experience, so it was something to set me apart. I don't know if you applied OOS as well, nor intend to, but it was brought up at three different schools. At Ohio one of my interviewers was a clinical pathologist lol. Wouldn't be that much of an issue with A&M though since they changed formats.

But any opportunity to set you apart is probably worth taking unless you're deficient in some other area.

I'm kinda in the same boat. Have you found any good 1 year Masters Programs there in Houston?

The UT Health Science Center here has an MPH that can be done in a year, although most do it in 18 months. The deadline for fall 2011 was March 1. I do actually want to go into the public health side of vet medicine anyway, so I might start working towards that. Texas A&M has a program in veterinary public health that I've checked out too. We'll see. I'm having trouble working up enthusiasm for going through another application process right now!

Howdy! You are I are kindred spirits. Though, I've decided to go ahead and get an MPH/VPH prior to vet school. I really want to go the epidemiology route. I've applied to both the VPH at Texas A&M (very small program!) and the MPH at UT Houston. If you have any questions about the application process or anything, feel free to PM me. The MPH application process is through SOPHAS, but the VPH is through ApplyTexas, which is a super easy application...unlike SOPHAS.

Good luck to y'all! I'm living vicariously through you! :luck:
