I know there is another one scheduled at 2. I think I remember reading somewhere that they only interview 3 or 4 people a day.

Yes, you are right after me! I bet when I'll be interviewing you'll be having lunch or the tour. My tour with a student starts at 11, and then there is lunch, and finally the interview.

No, you'll all be touring together. AVC does three interviews a day (part of the reason why our interview period is so long) You guys meet at the small animal hospital at 11 am, and a student will then take you on a tour through the school. The tour ends more or less at 11:45, and the student will take you to the cafeteria to meet with Dr Singh for lunch. Then the first student goes for their interview at 12:30, the second and third wait - not ideal for number three, trust me, I've been there, it's a long agonizing wait!

I think it's kinda cool that we get to have lunch with Dr. Singh and then interview. I know it's closed file, but I have heard that he has your application in front of him? And the other two interviewers are blind. Correct?
 
Coquette - I have noticed you are quite helpful to pre-vets with their questions about AVC. That is very kind of you. I do have a question which perhaps you or an international might be able to answer? I am aware that internationals are being interviewed right now yet I have not been contacted. How long do international interviews go, or should I consider my application unsuccessful. I just don't want to get my hopes up too much. Thanks in advance and I do wish all applicants success.

I didn't think it was too bad being last. I chatted with the other student and their family, who were nice. I don't think the interview itself takes that long (although I felt like it was like, 5mins and I know it was longer, haha) so it isn't as though you're there for hours on end.
 
I'm sure it will be fine. I will survive! Just the nervous waiting is going to be killer, I am sure! :laugh:

Along this line, does anyone know if they allow dual citizens (US/Canadian) who obtain residency after the first year to receive in province tuition? I couldn't find anything on their website, although I'm sure they don't come across this situation very frequently.

TooLove - Sorry I mis-read your question the first time. One might have to work in one of the maritime provinces for 12 months without attending university. It is a good question. I have a degree from a Canadian university and finishing another from a U.S. university and I wonder if that makes claiming residency difficult, or if they perceive you only moved there to improve your chances.

You can't claim residency simply based on living here during school. I would think the same rules would apply for a dual citizen as would apply for a Canadian only citizen, Unless you could claim residency somehow in one of the Atlantic provinces, but I've never heard of people changing residency.

Yeah, unfortunately just being a Canadian citizen doesn't help you. I'm assuming you've been living in the US (since you're interviewing with US students) so that would be your residency.

I know one student who is a dual US/Canadian citizen and she used her father's address when applying. She's was born in Canada and she's lived in the US with her mom since she was a toddler but she's in as a Canadian. She also gets US loans so it's a questionable situation to me but I guess no one in administration sees an issue with it :shrug:
 
Yeah, I can see people doing that, I had a classmate who was a dual citizen who'd spent a lot of time in the US, but also lived in Atlantic Canada and was in as an Atlantic Canadian (so she applied as an Atlantic Canadian and would have been compared to the others from her own province). I've never heard of someone applying as an International and then switching to Canadian though.
 
Whoa head spinning. So (and this is all assuming I got accepted) living there for a year while going to school would not be sufficient to claim residency? I know some US schools will allow this to receive in state tuition but Canada may be different so bear with me...

No, that isn't sufficient. If you're in school, you're not really a resident, you're just going to school there. To claim residence in a province, you'd need to be in that province for 12 months while not a student, or went to high school in that province, or if you have a parent/guardian who permanently lives in that province.

A resident of the Atlantic Provinces is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident:

a. whose last attendance at high school was in a school in the Atlantic Provinces; or
b. whose last province of residence for twelve (12) consecutive months during which time the student was not attending a university or college full-time was one of the Atlantic Provinces; or
c. for whom the permanent home address of parent, foster parent, or guardian is one of the Atlantic Provinces.

Dr. Singh will insist you have a snack. My sister came with me for my interview and she is very shy. She declined the snack Dr. Singh offered and he brought her a chocolate bar anyway :laugh: He is the nicest man 🙂 Being last isn't so bad; just make sure you have people to talk to or something to keep you occupied.

Does anyone know approximately how long International Interviews continue? Do they go into March as well? Just wondering as I have not heard anything yet. Conversely, if one is not granted an interview when might they find out? Regardless, I wish success to all applicants.

I had my interview March 2nd two years back. I imagine you would have heard something by now, but it may be worth an email to double check.
 
Question for the current PEI inhabitants. Are there any shuttles or something of the like in Charlottetown?

My current plan is to take cabs everywhere, but I'm staying less than a mile from UPEI and that just seems silly especially when most cabbies have minimum fees. Why drop 25 bucks for a 3 minute drive? Plan B is to rent a car. Still paying out the rear, but at least I could explore a bit.

There is public transit but it's not very extensive. I've taken the bus twice since moving here; it really depends where you want to go. Here is the website: http://triustransit.ca/schedules/charlottetown_transit

To anyone who is still wondering, they said today that next week is the last week for international interviews,and also that we'd likely get our decisions by the end of the month!

Good luck tomorrow! And don't be too nervous! Everyone is really friendly and seems to honestly really want you to succeed. Don't worry too much about being last--we actually had a random student come over and she sat and chatted with my dad and I while the second interview was going on, then continued to talk with my dad and the girl who had just come out of her interview the whole time I was interviewing. She even spied on the interview room to let me know ahead of time who would be interviewing me and what they were like 🙂
 
The end of the month?! As in this month?!?! February???

So that means I will find out less than a week after I interview 😱

Well that was just a general guesstimate Dr. Singh gave us, not an official date or anything! So if late Feb comes around and you haven't heard anything yet, don't panic!

Cab fare is pretty cheap to the university. If you live at the hotels suggested by AVC it should cost you no more than 7 bucks🙂
 
Oh, and not to put anyone off, but if when you arrive in PEI you're thinking, "Wow, this is a lot of snow, I bet it's just a bad year..." Sorry. It was like this last year too. Last year was more of a slow build and this year is sporadic massive snowfalls, but the overall amount is more or less the same. So if you're accepted (and I hope you all are!) and if you choose AVC (and I hope you do!), I just thought I'd warn you, since nobody warned me!

It went pretty well. Not my best, not my worst. It was pretty low stress, although a few times they were a bit overly eager in asking follow up questions, basically cutting me off in the middle of a sentence to ask about something else. But I generally try not to let stuff like that bother me in interviews and stay focused on myself and what I have to say. I did end up skipping a question. There is supposedly no penalty for doing so, but I still worry that it altered their impression of me, so I felt bad doing it. I essentially felt like I was saying there was never a time in my life when I had done this positive thing they were asking about, but I just couldn't think of an example.

And as a word of advice for anyone who hasn't interviewed yet, bring some water into the interview with you. They don't give you water like some schools do, and you'll need it!

This is the greatest tip ever. I've never interviewed before and I would have never thought of it.

See, I thought last year was a lot better snow-wise. I feel like we got less over all. Maybe I'm imagining it/wishful thinking:laugh:
 
I had my interview with AVC yesterday! As many people have already said, everyone there is so incredibly nice! Our tour was with Janice from the Dean's Office because the students were all busy with the start of their midterms. But whenever we ran into a student they usually stopped to chat with us, and pretty much everyone we passed wished us good luck in our interviews! I was also really impressed by how the faculty and staff seemed to be on a first name basis with every single one of the students. When Dr. Singh found out I had a good friend from undergrad who is a first year there, he even offered to go find her for me so I could see her before my interview! My mom came with me, and we both really loved the school and the atmosphere there!

My interview went really well, I think. The interviewers seemed to like my answers and at the end of the interview they told me they were really impressed by how well prepared I was! Dr. Singh did say that they will be sending out decisions for International students by the end of the month! Keeping my fingers really tightly crossed for good news! :luck:
