Everyone keeps saying that the class is 50% full.

I just wanted to chime in that I interviewed on Jan 27th and was told the class was 50% full at that time. I was then offered a spot, along with the few people that I kept in touch with from the interview. So there's no way the class is as full today as it was a month ago.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but this 50% full thing doesn't ring true to my ears.

I interviewed on 1/23 and haven't made my deposit yet. I think there are many others who were accepted and haven't made their deposit yet either, so that could be part of the confusion.

Thanks for the help on those dates, guys. Sounds like I have awhile to wait! At least I'm happy with my research job, so if I'm forced to enjoy my free time for another year, that won't be a problem. Best of luck to all of you.

Yeah, I would think that if the class was 50% full, the c/o 2013 would get a little more activity, but that's not really a good indicator I suppose 🙂

I really wouldn't be surprised that if wasn't even 50% full or it dropped down to it after people didn't make their deposit.

Just focus on the interview and don't worry too much about fighting for a spot.

Very well put

for anyone who has sent in update letters, I have a question. I sent in an update letter (both paper copy and email) about 3 weeks ago and just called the office this morning to see if it was received. It wasn't. She advised me to send it again through email at [email protected]. Should i be worried that it will not be in my file again? i don't like to keep calling.

(deleted - wrong thread!)

Orientation is August 4-7th, according to the welcome letter in our online page.

It doesn't say when class starts, but last year classes started the Monday directly following orientation, so I would assume that would be Aug 10th this year.

Just put down my deposit today and submitted my request for student housing. Will most likely withdraw my wait list status at other schools, so 99.9999% attending!!! 👍

KEEP calling them. Your job is to bug them. I mailed a letter interest and they didnt get it so I emailed it and they didnt get it again. I called about 3-5 times until i personally went in and handed in everything. Dont be shy

Congrats renny I can only imagine how good it feels for you! Lets hope we can be classmates 🙂

It's weird; every time I click on Welcome and Orientation on the Student Services tab, it leads to nowhere and sends me back to the front page. I got the dates from here:

http://www.midwestern.edu/AZAcadCalMaster09_10.pdf

Yes, Classes do start Monday August 10th.

There is a welcome Letter under Student Services and once you click Welcome Orientation it says "click here to view AZCOM WELCOME LETTER", make sure you click on the "click here" link, it should open up adobe to a letter.

Hopefully that works!

Well, the problem is when I see the URL at the bottom, there is not link to such a place. Instead, it loops back around to the Student Services tab, so yeah, I can't even get that far. I don't even think I got a physical letter either, so I might just head down to the office and get one. Thanks for the help though.

Speaking of which, Kish, are you pretty much settled on AZCOM?

Yea. I would say I'm pretty sure I'm going to AZCOM. I have dreams about it..hahahha..isn't that weird. Well dream/nightmares....at least some type of visions, in which I wake up in the morning and feel like well I'm going to AZCOM in the fall.

I put in my housing deposit way back in December.

And I like the heat.

I'm looking forward to the opening fountain way.

Does anyone know when the committe is planning on to meet for matricularion? I know its next week but what day?

Can any current student talk about the COA real quick? How much do we get per month approximately....? I would imagine its a lot seeing as how tuition is pretty high....

Whats up yall. asking for some advice from you folks who are either from the area or know the area very well. This is NOT about the educational experience at AZCOM, i know what i need to know already and like what I see, instead, this is concerning the culture/diversity in the area.

I recently got rejected from the only UC i was offered an interview from, so AZCOM is the closest to home i am getting. It comes down to AZCOM, and 2 schools on the East Coast.

My background: Grew up in Cali, raised in the inner city in a city that was VERY influenced by the Hip Hop culture. So I am very used to a diverse group of people, not just racially, but in the way they live thier lives as well (style, manner, music taste...etc)....and I absolutely love the inner city! Well, after graduating from undergrad (In Cali), I ended up going to Grad school in Rural New england and I absolutely HATE IT out here. People are all the same (not only are they of only one race, but the few minorities I have met, they are very homogenous as well), no one listens to hip hop (dont get me wrong, i listen to my fair share of carole king, paul davis, GnR, fLEETWOOD Mac...list goes on)....but the homogeniety (Preppie high class elitist folks) is absolutely killing me, and I feel like an absolute ALIEN out here! lol People have been very sheltered out here and it is has been very tough for me in my time out here.

Question: So, what is the culture like in Arizona/Pheonix/Glendale? The good is that its a very short plane trip to home, but in the city, is it like the northeast? Or are people more laid back and chill like californians? Only thing I dont like about AZCOM is the tuition, but im willing to pay the extra 15k in tuition per year to get back to an area that will remind me of home (also to keep myself from complete insanity!) thanks yall.

how do deposits work at this school if you get in.....is it just a one time deposit or is it a multi-step deposit

I grew up in Cali, so I think I know where you are coming from. I am currently doing a master's here so will try to answer as honestly as I can. From my personal experience, I do not feel like AZCOM has a very (ethnically) diverse student population esp. when compared to any of the schools in Cali. I don't think the city of Glendale is very culturally diverse either, although if you drive about 15-20min into Phx, you will get a completely different scene there. The lack of diversity here doesn't really bother me all that much because I spent the later majority of my childhood in Tucson, AZ (which is even less diverse than the Phoenix area), although it took me several years to adjust to being around mostly one race all the time. Honestly though I don't think it's all that bad here, and your experience in rural New England sounds much worse! Maybe someone else can comment on this, too. Hope that helps.

I know exactly what you are talking about...I don't think anywhere will be like cali when it comes to diversity and lifestyle. Did you apply to Western?

hey! thanks a lot. your input is very helpful!

nope, i really should have though. i dont know what i was THINKING! ( so so dumb on my part......)

any additional input would be GREAT!

I know exactly where your coming from. I initially grew up in New Orleans ( HUGE diversity). I have been living here in AZ for about 10 years. Im a minority myself here and compared to new orleans its a white washed state lol. But again, I have visited cali countless times and to be honest the diversity is really the same as for as the towns and cities go. Im a huge hip hop fan myself thats pretty much all I listen too and I pretty much surrounded myself with those types of people. There is a really good mix but depending where you are Im sure you wont have a problem fitting in at all. If your into the night life I mean its all on location but Id defeninetly say its a good mix of people. As far as the school goes, i dont think it is as diverse. There is a huge hip hop fan here its pretty much taken over through all the cultures. I wouldnt be too worried about it myself. Plus, If I do get accepted than atleast you know you have one hip hop loving person with you 🙂 If you have anymore questions dont hesistate, hope it helped.

All I listen to is hip-hop and unless I get accepted to Wayne State, I will be there in August, so you'll for sure have at least 1 friend hehe. We can study to Nas, oldschool Outkast, Kanye, Pac, or whatever ur into (but no Soulja Boy...ever) hahaha. Maybe we can start a Hip-Hop Doctors organization or something 🙂 lol.

In terms of the area, I have only seen the area a few times, but def doesn't seem like a super-diverse area. This will be a little odd for me too, seeing as how I'm a resident advisor at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where its my job to notice diversity and celebrate it. Oh well tho, hopefully everything will work out, AZCOM seems like a pretty good school and I'm sure we'll turn out to be great physicians that will be able to recognize diversity in the workplace 🙂.

Good luck trying to make a decision man!!

PS: Living in MI I can tell you that warm weather, if nothing else, should be a major deciding factor!

hey can someone post the link to the login for interview scheduling? I need to cancel mine and I guess only kept the email I got after confirming the interview, which dosn't have a link to the login, and I can't find it on their website.

hey. i realize what you're getting at, and i'm basically the same way. grew up in miami, so we have our fair share of hispanics, blacks, whites, and everything else. i also listen to basically nothing other than hip-hop and r&b, and would like a diverse population. in fact, my brother has STACKS of records and dj equipment, so in essence, i'm forced to listen to it even when i don't want to lol. i don't know if you're talking about mainstream hip-hop (rap), or if you're talking about little brother/immortal technique/royce hip-hop, but to tell you the truth, i doubt you'll find as much of that kind of stuff in AZ. from the impression i got, it seemed like it was a predominately white/hispanic population. but hey, anything is better than this rural area i'm in now for undergrad.

i really don't mind, though. i think the school is excellent and should keep me occupied for long enough! good luck with your choice.

you arent down with the "kiss me through the phone"?? thats real hip hop man..lol, just playin. i cant stand him either. but yeah, good luck with wayne man, and if we both end up at azcom, we can definately start a hip hop doc crew, lol.

yeah, im def into the night life. its crazy out here, because ill go to a bar, look around and there would be no one like me at all! its like a bunch of clones, then me.. good luck with the outcome, im sure you'll be good. Its nice to know that there are other folks headed to med school with the same concerns as me.. music really does connect folks.

i was just there about a month ago and absolutely LOVED it! talking to the med students around there (all from places like ohio, iowa, wisconsin and such), they were talking about how they loved the area, but hated the people. I spent about a week down there and there seemed to be NOTHING BUT LOVE from people. Went to the bars, chopped it up with folks and the people really are amazing, reminded me of cali folks. but like dr. frankenstien, ive always surrounded myself with that crowd, so it felt good.
as for the hip hop and RnB, sounds just like me, i listen to RnB as much as I do hip hop. as for what type, if you consider nas, common, death row and such mainstream, then yeah, but i also listen to lots of brother ali, consequence, etc..

some of my classmates were like "man, i really respect the fact that you dont change the way you are because you are out here". so they realize it too, even though they are one of them. so its not just me over reacting to this, they notice the differences too.

Character so are you already accepted to azcom? or are u still waiting?
aww man, ive been accepted for a minute. since back in october. put down my deposit in november, so im just trying to make some decisions now.

did anyone already go through the "apply for aid" section? i'm just beginning and am wondering if you chose MWU as your lender for stafford loans, or did you use another source?

I have withdrawn from an interview at AZCOM scheduled for March 2. Hope someone can jump in there...

Hey everyone! So, I have an interview on 4/27!!! Sounds so late but I did apply pretty late! I'm really excited, though, b/c I LOVE the Phoenix area and its close to home!!!! I will miss Florida but I would love to live there!!! Anyone else interviewing this day?

Woot! Accepted (via phone) from 2/25 interview!!!

Wow, that is fastest turn-around time I have ever heard of. Congrats!

Do you know if you are attending yet?

Yeah...that floored me, too...returning the VMail I thought that it was either very good news or something not so very good...missing LOR or taking pictures of lecture hall/buildings' exterior/construction or something....

I've narrowed it down to 2 schools - AZCOM and PCOM (or maybe NSUCOM)...I can't say that I'm biased for Philly...I was just getting to the airport to head back home when I heard about PCOM acceptance...but it was still sad leaving AZ to head back to PA 🙁 All I could think about when sitting on the PHL parking shuttle filled with cold faces, then scraping the ice off my windshield was AZ....

My wife and I did a pre-honeymoon trip in June in AZ/UT...we enjoyed it more than our honeymoon in the Bahamas. 120F is a little scary (but hey...2 bad months vs. 4 months at extremes) and the move and cost *huge*, but I'm still torn at the moment...I have to research rotations more...

It didn't help when I let one of the recent PCOM grads, who knew I was applying to PCOM, in our ED know I was accepted at PCOM and AZCOM. His reply, "Well, PCOM's rotations aren't as good as what they used to be at all...unless they changed something recently....not nearly as many urban rotations as before, ..., ..."

You Rennykim?

I just put my deposit down for AZCOM last week, so 99% sure I am attending! Currently wait-listed at a cold out-of-state MD school (will probably withdraw though because I prefer AZ location), and am still waiting to hear back from my state MD schools with regards to the wait-list. I guess what really sold me on AZCOM are the strong focus on the boards, research opportunities, and location, of course. Still not sure on the rotation situation, though. Congrats on PCOM and Nova, btw.

This is kind of weird...i talked to admissions and the told me they werent meeting this week and it wont be until next week till I find out. Im suprised and shocked ? I interviewed 2/20.

Congrats on your acceptance! 🙂 Both AZCOM and PCOM are well-regarded schools. PCOM is probably one of the best regarded schools (I think), but from what I've seen on this forum, both schools are solid programs. Since PCOM is cheaper and closer to home for you (near family and friends) and has a stronger reputation, if I were in your shoes, I'd probably choose PCOM. However, in my case, AZCOM is in my family's city and I love warm weather - so I am really happy about my AZCOM acceptance. But even if you did choose AZCOM, I doubt you'd have regrets as it is a nice place here. You seem like a nice guy as well (from what I've seen of your posts), so I'm sure we'd love to have you as a classmate....

As far as rotations go, there may be some rotation issues at AZCOM as well, especially as they find spots for 250 students. I've looked into the issue quite a bit and have talked to current students and even an assistant dean. At this point, I still don't have a clear idea of the rotation situation except that the school seems to be working on things, and I can only go in hoping for the best. Current graduates seem to be doing very well for themselves, and the match list is strong, so I feel like we can all do well for ourselves if we just put in the effort.

Like Renny, I am about 99% sure about attending AZCOM. I'm just waiting for the University of Arizona waitlist to come out (as that's my top choice school), so I can get a better idea of which school I may be attending.

Good luck on your decision! 👍

You were notified today? on a Saturday? Mind tellin us your stats?

This is kind of weird...i talked to admissions and the told me they werent meeting this week and it wont be until next week till I find out. Im suprised and shocked ? I interviewed 2/20.

Interviewed Wed 2/25, on Thr 2/26 6:30pm est they called me via the number listed on my app (I gave my cellphone number as primary number...but I'm not sure if it was from my primary or secondary). I missed the non-descript voice mail and returned the call Fri 2/27 ~5:30pm est. They said they called only because they thought I was a "great applicant" (I don't know how that happened!?! Stats), but it wasn't because of a scholarship or anything. So don't freak out if you don't hear anything right away...I got the impression that it would take ~ 2 weeks for everyone. 👍

Like all interviews, as long as you are confident and not easily rattled, know your stuff about the school's program and reputation, review ~1 yrs worth of SDN questions, are committed to osteopathy (and can explain why), can give an great, comfortable answer to "Tell me about yourself"/"Why medicine?"/"Why osteopathy?"/"Why AZCOM?", and ask one or two intelligent questions other than "So where's the food at?", I think you'll get it...best of luck! :luck:
