for those of you recently accepted, has your statuses online changed?

Just wondering if anyone has been waitlisted for an interview and eventually received one? Trying to figure out if they actually reject anyone or just waitlist them for interviews and reject them at the end.

Thanks

Did someone say video games?!?!?!?

By the way I'm thinking of buying a house in the area. Anyone interested in being roomates for $400 a month?

I've heard, from mostly MD physicians, that the level of skill of people coming out of AZCOM varies widely from person to person. This basically goes with the saying, "you get out what you put it" and seems obvious, but it is something to note. These physicians, 3 to be exact (2 PM&R and 1 ER), also spoke negatively of the high tuition and the number of seats and said that it has gone down hill since they increased.
The quality of the student body since the class size increase is impossible to determine from a clinical standpoint, seeing as that class is still a year and a half away from rotations.

So i'm not sure how any physicians can say anything is 'downhill' because they havent even interacted with the lone increased class size.

At the end of the day, whether DO or MD, whether carib or azcom, where anything you will still be a successful practicing physician. Now make it easy on yourself and come to azcom. I need someone to play madden 09 (or call of duty u can pick) during the many study breaks.
you will find that video games become marginalized very, very quickly...some people will crack open a Wii during a party or two though

Oh, and congrats to everyone getting accepted, whether it be AZCOM or elsewhere. And to those discouraged, keep trying...some of the top people in my class didnt get in the first time around.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying initially. The physicians weren't specifically talking about the quality of the students decreasing with increasing class size when they mentioned the school is going 'downhill', they were implying that it will probably get worse - meaning it wasn't great to begin with, and that increasing the class size isn't going to help the problem. These aren't my words, but theirs, and only 3 at that, though they did seem to all share the same opinion.

I'm not saying this to get a rise out of anyone, I'm only shedding light on something I think is important when considering a medical school as it helped in my decision. Take it how you want.

I know several recent graduates of AZCOM who are quite pleased with the education they received at the school. The opinions of recent graduates mean more to me than some random doctors who didn't attend the school and aren't familiar with the program.

Are those physicians you talked to aware of what the school is doing to increase rotations opportunities, such as expanding access to clerkships within Arizona, starting the Ohio rotations this year etc? I am guessing not. So I would definitely think students who are currently in the program and working with administration are a lot more qualified to evaluate how the school is doing than random physicians who are just going off their own biased opinions without really knowing anything about it.

Trust me, I'm one of those people who makes decisions slowly and carefully after REALLY looking into the issue. I was concerned about the availability of clinical rotations in the beginning - that was my biggest concern. That's why I talked to current students on this forum (and even another current student over the phone), and even met up with the assistant dean to discuss the clerkship situation. That's how nervous I was, and how proactive I am about getting appropriate guidance. But after talking with them all, I saw that current and former students were really happy with the education, and I've been told that as long as a student is proactive he/she can get a solid education here. (I did meet a few students who had some concerns about clinicals, but those concerns were merely things for me to consider while going through the program - not reasons to NOT attend the school.) I also dug up the old match lists, and was very pleased to see students match into excellent residencies. So after actively pursuing answers to my questions, I am not worried about things. Yes, we may need to be proactive about our education, but others before us have gotten a quality education from this school, and so can we. Although we need to be well-informed (and not keep our heads in the clouds), there is no particular cause for alarm - as AZCOM is a solid program.

I agree with what you've said Rkaz, thanks for adding your own experience to the mix. I think the moral of the story is "you get out what you put in" and it's the same anywhere you go.

AMEN!! Amen to the tenth power! Very well put, and I also enjoyed the closing statement - as AZCOM is a solid program. 👍 Everything she just said is backed up with CURRENT physicians that is practicing of whom graduated from AZCOM and also from a current student in a residency program that graduated in AZCOM also, both of whom I spoke too and reassured me that you will get a mighty fine education at AZCOM. Your chances are there, just put your all into it and go get it, the school wont hand deliver an ortho surgery level rotation or residency spot you have to work for everything!

So random question:

I went online and noticed that my matriculation agreement for AZCOM is up. We also apparently have to send in another hard copy of our transcripts....

I have a slight problem with that. On my AACOMCAS there is a course listed as still in progress (a SPA 101 course I signed up for to try and learn some spanish in my free time). I realy did not like the online format of the course and totally forgot to withdraw from it so I now have an F in it....could AZCOM disqualify me because of that? For a class I took just for the hell of it?

Don't worry about it. I actually had the exact same situation--thought a dropped a class but due to "site maintenance", it didn't drop. AZCOM received my transcript and I am still accepted. I think the reason they want your transcript is to just have a hard copy; AACOMAS doesn't provide them with one. The secretary probably just opens it up and puts it into your record folder. 🙂

If the class wasn't required, I doubt AZCOM would drop you for it - though I'd still recommend bringing up this issue with them to try to clear things up.

The only issue is that U of A might drop you for an F, as if you get accepted there, they make you sign an agreement upon acceptance that any failing grade results in a revocation of acceptance. So this may be an issue at U of A.

Does anyone know how many spots/offers are left? I applied very late and got an interview invite today. I haven't seen a very helpful number on this thread...Thanks!

Any AZCOM students out there listening? I could really use your help.

I live in southern california and need to choose between Azcom and Touro Nevada. I love the campus, but during my interview day at azcom, it seems that most of the students were busy studying for an exam and i didn't get enough time to talk to the students. I would really like to know about what the experience of attending azcom is all about. Please PM me an email or phone number so I can ask some nosy questions about daily living and try to decide if azcom is right for me. Thanks!😳

Just called them and they said it would not be an issue.

Just paid my deposit so its official! Protein, i see you werent accepted to uofa as well, azcom for sure now?

The gym opened this week with hours from 7am - 7pm. I am very pleased with the gym. There are free weights and they are actually pretty nice ones with dumbbells that go up to 100lbs. There is a room that houses the machines (both cardio and weight) and then a separate room that houses the free weights. There are also two racquetball courts and an indoor basketball court.

Overall I was way impressed with the quality of the gym. I have had memberships at both LA Fitness (in CA) and a couple of different Gold's in Utah and I lift 3-4 time per/week. I would say this gym is actually nicer than one of the Gold's that I once had a membership to (although not as nice as most commercial gyms). Anyway, it is definitely a nice perk.

Check out Lifetime Fitness.

Are there showers so you can get fresh and clean after you workout? Plenty of cardio machines? Any instances of not having equipment available due to more students than there are machines/weights? Thanks for your insight!

Me too. I was WL really low (bottom 25%) for UA, which translates to me as a rejection. I am very excited about starting here this fall.

It almost makes me upset though that I studied so hard for the MCAT and spent so much damn money on prep books and stuff...b/c ultimately that wasn't what got me in.

Protein,
I totally feel you on that one. But, hey, at least you know you tried your best...we're all gonna do great at AZCOM. I am one of thoes "things turn out the way they are supposed to" people, so I feel like where I end up is how it is meant to be. If my state school doesn't want me, I will go elsewhere to get my education and still succeed at becomming a great physician. 😀

I had called student services on the phone, and they told me that the gym would be open from 6am until midnight. Do you know if this 7-7 hour thing just temporary... and they will expand hours later?

Thank you! We'll do great and I'm going to start prepping for the boards from day one with First Aid. I'll get my HAHA when I get 90th percentile or higher on them 🙂

And who cares if the glass is half empty or half full? There's still beer in it already so just drink it already!

haha, man, i feel you on that! I was thinking about doing the same thing, continually reviewing the board material and practicing here and there as we cover material, that way, i wouldnt have to re-learn things while studying for the boards...save lots of time to study for the usmle's as well.

anyways, ive got my last final to take this friday, and I am seriously having a hard time focusing!

I was also planning on buying the Kaplan study package (for the USMLE), but it seems really expensive and maybe not worth it? ...

Have you ever read the Rumors were True? It's probably my favorite thing on the web. The guy is hilarious!

http://rumorsweretrue.wordpress.com/

Anyway he scored really (99th percentile) on the USMLE step 1. Not bad for going to St. Georges 🙂

He wrote a lot on how to prepare:

This is his blog for the USMLE:

ENJOY!

This is temporary. They don't have a full-time person staffing the front desk there yet and so they have work-study students filling in. This is why it is only open limited hours this week. This could have even changed since the last time I talked to someone.

Also, there are showers to clean up. The old gym in the barrel student center still has it's showers and lockers too.

On a side note I overheard other students talking about the gym today (right after I wrote my original post) and they weren't as pleased with the new place as I am. Said the weight room is too small. I figure it is way bigger than what we had before and the old place was never full anyway.

A lot of students (I think) have a gym membership at the aquatics center down the street and I guess hypothetically if they all canceled their gym membership and started using the new school gym regularly then it could get crowded. In my experience, however, very few people go to the gym as regularly as they intend to. I usually see the same couple of people there every time I go.

Excuse me but do you know where the weight room is?

::starts bouncing pecs::

do you think the class size increase will affect the number of students going into specialties? azcom is growing but residencies in specialties such as ortho are not significantly increasing openings to keep up with the growth. either way, i see a trend in diverse residency matches at azcom.
