You know, I'm starting to regret putting the 2/1 as my first choice for on campus housing because it seems a lot of people would like the extra bonuses for the price 🙁 Anyhow, would anyone be open to the idea of rooming?

DrBello, I'm going to guess that they're probably at the end of their invite schedule. April is usually when the interviews finish and they try to give a few weeks prior. I'd give them a ring and ask them, along with an update on your status.

rkaz, you know what's interesting is that each Winter quarter for the first two years, the med students undergo a rite of passage of sorts where they saturate the last 3 weeks or so with tests. I believe the first years had 13 tests in the last 3 weeks of this past winter quarter, which included finals.

I don't know if it is poor planning or that they're trying something new, but it happened to the c/o 2011 too in the same fashion, so maybe we can look forward to that 🙂

wow that schedule looks horrible, 6 finals, 5 days?!?!? Also are all the 2 bedroom apartments on campus a 2/1???

Yeah, it was a pretty rough quarter, but like I said, it seems like a weed out type of ritual that everyone has to go through. I have a feeling c/o 2013 won't be any different.

Also, there are 2/2s available, from a 'luxury' one to a 'super luxury' one or whatever it's called. I picked the cheapest one because I'll be living off of loans and I think I could manage without a washer and dryer in house.

Either way, on campus is pretty affordable. Everything except power is included and if you take my option, that's about $350 per month. For the next tier, I think it'll be $550, which isn't too bad either.

Flushot, so are you in the standard one bedroom with den option, i dont see the 2/1 option anywhere

Hmm, yeah, I would look into those sites before buying anything, but did you also have audition rotations in mind? I plan on going out of state if I have the choice.

Also, about safety: I wouldn't worry too much about it. Glendale is a retirement city and the only reported crime last year was vandalism, I believe. Trust me, nothing goes on around here, good or bad

I signed up for the one bedroom with den too. I just don't need all the bells and whistles, so cheap is the way for me to go! If anyone is interested in a roommate, feel free to PM me. I'm 23, female, but I don't mind living with either a guy or girl (I've had both male and female roomies in the past). I usually study hardest in libraries, so when I study at home, I like music or something a little more chill. This may change with the rigors of med school, but I like to cook, and most people say I'm really good at it.

Enough with the mini autobiography....

Yeah, like fratelli, I'm also 1 bed w/ den, so I am in sort of a need of a roommate. The thing is I was supposed to room with my current roommate, but he is currently waitlisted at the Dental school here and it's looking pretty dire (7 seats left, 180 person waitlist).

I want to keep things open, but I'm sure we can consolidate rooms if needed.

Wow, that's ridiculous. I guess I shouldn't have taken the school's crime report list for Glendale as truth right off.

FYI to those who are on the waitlist or have an upcoming interview, 200 of the 250 spots have been filled.

Thank you, Flushot. I called and they said I was "on hold", so whatever that means!

Hey, no problem. Also, you could send a LoI or an updated transcript to move you in a better position. Also, make sure to keep checking back here if anyone cancels their invite.

i think the report you were thinking of was the campus crime report they emailed to all of us...in which the only crime was theft. glendale as a fairly large city will obviously have its fair share of crime.

Oh, right, I think I remember that. Yeah, it only counted the campus territory.

Overall though, I think Glendale is a pretty quiet city, especially if you don't go beyond a few blocks from campus.

This might be a silly question, but hey I need to know!
I thought the standard to send a LoI is after you had an interview. Is appropriate to send one before? If so, then I will send one.

The only reason one would send a Letter of Interest before is if you want an interview and haven't gotten one.

If you already have an interview scheduled, it makes no sense to send one before the interview. You could certainly send one after the interview though, especially if you are really serious about attending the school.

does anyone know how full the class is to date? i tried calling but i just got the answering machine. thanks! and also, in your opinion, is there a good chance to get off the waitlist this year if we send in a letter of intent?

Does anyone know when interviews end? I know it's sometime in april but just wanted to make sure.

I can't directly answer your question, but I saw a group of students in ugly black suits interviewing today.

I heard May 5th was the last date...but I know there are interviews the last week of April at least. I'm also on the alternate list so I feel your pain. Last year there was quite a bit of movement I believe, I know of a few people here that were waitlisted last year who got in including my roommate. Some of them didn't get pulled off until a few weeks before school starts though...but I'm hoping for some movement as soon as interviews are over.

Yeah, I guess I didn't clear that up. There's a letter of interest (pre-interview) and letter of intent (post-interview/waitlist). The latter is basically a notice that the recipient school is your one and only, although it is not a contract by any means. SDN often has debates on the efficacy of these letters and whether or not it is right to send multiple Intents. A quick search will net you some of these debates.

Hey guys,
Anyone know where I can locate the cost of tuition online? I have tried to find it or follow the links on the acceptance website, but the link doesn't work. I would greatly appreciate some #s for 2009-2010, or even last year would be great.

After this blizzard in CO, I am sincerely stoked to move to AZ. Certainly can't say I'll love the August heat, but hey, least you don't have to leave an extra 30 mins early to get to work or go outside suited up like the Michelin man (aka a marshmallow) to clean the snow off your car. 😀

THanks for any info on tuition.

tuition is 1 million dollars, well actually around 43,500....super expensice😡

haha. you just have to laugh when you think about how much $$ we are all spending to subject ourselves to this. love it...and thats just for tuition? not COA, right?

Yeah. I was just talking to my father about this tonight, actually. Since I will be taking out the full COA + living expenses, added on to my $30k in loans from this master's, I will be finishing in 4 years $270+k in debt + 6-8% interest. My dad pretty much told me I am screwed if I wanted to start a family later, esp. if my future spouse is in a similar situation. Ouch. Really regretting not spending those few extra hours preparing for that MCAT and perhaps having a better shot at my state school... oh well. Just think that things could be much worse.

how long does it usually take to finish your paying off about 250k in debt??? I would think that if a physician is single and lives minimal and is making around 150k/yr, then they could pay off the loans within 5 years. This is also just what im thinking and havent spoken to anyone on how long it took to repay their loans

That is exactly my plan. Live single and very simply (<$1000/month -- yes, it can be done). I haven't really talked to a lot of doctors/current med students about that either, though.

*edit* Okay, I recalculated and it looks like I could maybe do <$1200/month comfortably since I would prefer keeping some basic comforts like owning a cell phone, driving my luxury vehicle that only takes premium gas, and maintaining my bi-monthly hair/nail appointments. I really hope I don't change my mind by then, haha.

living under 1k can only be done in certain cities, good luck in NY or Cali

Proteinpowda solution:

Buy house
Get roomates
Pre-pay mortgage
Build equity
Upon graduation when loans become due refinance house to shift student loans to house loan and get tax deduction to save $$$$ (since we'll all be making too much to deduct our student loans)
And moonlight during residency as much as possible.

Or I can just become a gigolo and skip all those nasty weekly exams....

I needed an academic year statement filled out, and the registrar quoted tuition as $43,304.00. Close enough I'suppose😉

There's no in-state/out of state tuition correct? everyone pays the same regardless of residence hopefully..please clear this up for me

Thank you in advance!

You are correct

Just an FYI to those interested.... on-campus housing assignments were made available today. Login to the student portal to see where you have been assigned.

Hey is anyone looking for a roommate? I am starting the DO program in August and looking for roommate/s who would want to live in an apartment close to campus. e-mail me if you are interested: [email protected]

i got a studio apartment on campus....anyone have any pictures of the apartment....i just signed up bc it is so close but now im wondering what they actually look like... i never got a chance to look inside while i was there

Yeah, I got my first choice, the 2/1 den thingy. What did everyone else get?

Luxury 2 bedroom apt K 😉

Crap. I just noticed we are on the first floor. I hate the first floor. It's usually noisy and feels more unsafe. Oh well. I guess it's better than 3rd?

I'm in the luxury 1 bdr apartment, same building, same floor as you Renny. I really liked the idea of living on 3rd floor, as the patio view would be wonderful... but I figured moving in/out might be a real pain.

Actually I am wondering now if I shouldn't have gotten a 2 bedroom apartment to share with someone. The one bedroom is a lot of space, but $885 is a lot to spend each month. I'm still wondering if I should get a condo somewhere for the same monthly rent. Hmm..

I wonder how long we have before we need to make a decision on housing. Also, are we allowed to move in from August 1st onwards, or could we move in any earlier?

I am wondering the same thing. Will post if/when I find the answer!!

Are there pictures of the luxury 1 bedrooms anywhere? I got assigned to the third floor... does each one have a balcony/ patio?? Thanks!

Also, does anyone know how strict they are on pets for on campus housing? I'm assuming pretty strict...

I got a 2/1 on the third floor building D.... A-D are the older buildings, right?

A few things:

The 2/1 (which is technically a 1 bed with den, but it is supposed to be for 2 people) is 730 a month. So it'll be 365 a month for each person, not counting power of course. Mine is building D, floor 1.

Second, if possible, I would try to avoid the 3rd floor because in the summer time or end of it, the heat can get pretty ridiculous since there's nothing buffering the rays, but I hear it pays off in winter if you're not fond of the cold.

Third, I believe they are very strict on pets. I would avoid bringing any if possible.

I will have to think about the whole summer sun issue.... as for the cold thing, Michigan winters have hardened my soul :bang:

On another note is there a way to get a floor plan or a layout? Just kind of curious about what I have gotten myself into here 🙂

The only way you could do that is to room with someone else on campus at this point. It seems that the waitlist is pretty hefty and joining it would be what would happen if you wanted to get another option. Either that or you could try a mutual exchange. I don't know how that would work, so you'd have to call Jose and ask if it is possible.

i got a studio, building F, 3rd floor! glad to get my first choice. im also wondering if we can move in a few days earlier than the 1st...

Wait, you mean the 1st of August is the earliest we can move in? I only ask because I haven't accepted the offer just yet.

I think it'll be fine, can't be that bad....

Third floor of K building in a studio!!

It was my first choice too, so I'm excited.

I wonder how long we have till we have to sign the contract.

My move in date is 08/01/09, at least that is the earliest, considering I think building K isone of the new ones.

THree days till orientation should be enough...hopefully to get settled in😕

i seriously applied like 2-3 days before these arrangements were assigned and I got my first choice....the newer studios

I'm also still undecided as to whether or not I want to accept the offer -- not sure if I want to pay $550+/mo anymore (including electricity) and I'm also waitlisted at a couple other schools and probably shouldn't have made any housing arrangements until June/July -- I matched into the new 2 bd/2 ba luxury apts with upgrades (building K first floor); my roommate seems like a really nice girl, please PM me if you are interested in taking my spot and I will email Jose.

btw, for those of us declining the on-campus housing, how much of our $500 deposit do we lose?
