Waitlisted? Is the class already full?

no, but Jim Walter mentioned they could possibly take off the list before the class is full. When I interviewed at AZCOM, it was after NSU, and I thought for sure I got into AZCOM....was actually very surprised to be waitlisted, considering how well the interview went. I thought I got rejected at NSU and I got accepted, so go figure.

my point was though that I initially really liked AZCOM over NSU...but since I've put my deposit down at NSU and have thought about it some more, I'm quite thrilled to be going to NSU next August. I had thought that if AZCOM accepted me after the first deposit, that I'd take it, but now I'm not so sure. NSU is cheaper and has great options and flexibility for 4th year rotations, tests every week..all like azcom does.

anyways, happy holidays and best of luck to you...i wish we could all get in somewhere.:luck:

rkaz, calm down, lol. i think you'll be fine -- you're interviewing sooner than me and i'm not really concerned. then again, i may have a false sense of security. but i mean, a class of 250 vs most schools have about 110 spots and still interview through may, is my point...

creekfreek, trade you for my AZCOM acceptance if i get in 😀 i'm really regretting not applying to Nova since I knew nothing about the program and was initially determined to stay in AZ for medical school... congrats on your acceptance.

oh and merry christmas everyone 🙂

Rennykim,
You can still apply to nova. I was still applying and getting interviews up until 7-10 days ago.😀 I stopped now, I am just sick of applying...

Hey,

Does does anyone want to trade my Fri 1/30 interview date for something early-mid Feb? I've decided it works better for my schedule to interview first of second weeks in Feb instead of late Jan.

So if anyone currently scheduled for early/mid Feb wants to switch for 1/30, please let me know so we can get online at the same time and do the switch 😀

Just letting you all know that 1/30 is now open -- someone else kindly rescheduled their early Feb interview date so I changed mine as well.

However, if someone reschedules to something a little later (before 2/13) could you please PM me or post on this thread?

Thanks!!

Are you trying to do it after our 3rd physio test? I think that would be best, not to mention you want to avoid Wed too so you don't miss lab. 5% off for each missed lab is brutal.

I think that test date is 2/11.

Haha actually I wanted to schedule it a little later to give myself the proper 30 days for deposit time since I should be hearing back from both UA schools mid-March and didn't want to waste $1000 in case I got really lucky and accepted to both places since my parents will already be putting down $1k for SOMA. However, it also works out nicely with our testing schedule so that's another added bonus 😀

Hey guys,

I withdrew my spot a couple days ago... decided to stay in the Midwest and go to CCOM. Best of luck to you all!! This is a great school

Does anyone know about the status of the new gym that is planning on being built? Will that be available by August? I heard that there is a small recreation room in the student center, but that a new bigger gym was planned for campus? I will be at the campus in just over 2 weeks, so I will inquire, but I thought I'd check here on the forum in case anyone happened to know.

When I interviewed I thought they said it would be ready by the time we started school.

When I walked by it about an hour ago they had the guys just finishing up painting the lines on the indoor basketball court. Also the carpet just went in this week. I expect it to be done by this time next month. In any case it looks like it will be done long before August.

It seems that they might complete the project during our quarter/Spring break. I saw their progress too today and I wonder how far their wiring and lighting have come on the other areas of the building. But like the other concern, it will probably be done before the summer for sure.

withdrew my application and cancelled my interview for feb 2nd,..good luck to everyone!

Yeah, I was about to bump this up since it was sinking to the 3rd page fast...

Anyone else interviewing? I still see some people coming in and I know some in the MA program are interviewing soon, i.e. next week.

I am interviewing this week, and am really excited about it! Good luck to all the others who are also interviewing this week... I hope we get good news soon!!! 🙂

Awesome, good luck rkaz! Make sure to ask your student tour guide to point out the new gym/rec center. They just finished the lightning it seems and it'll be open pretty soon I hope.

Let us know how it goes and if you need to know anything before then. I interviewed way back in Sept, so if you need any specifics, let me know.

Rkaz, I'm excited about finally meeting you on Fri!!! Did you know UA is supposed to release another round of acceptances next week, for what, another 10-15 people? 😛

Anyway I just gave up my seat at my only acceptance so I really hope this interview goes well. Good luck to both of us next week :xf:

I am interviewing on the 29th as well!! I am just looking forward to getting out of the dreary, cold Pittsburgh weather into warm, sunny Glendale.... Hmm i hope the fact that I'm a Steelers fan wont hurt me 😛

Haha yea,
I'm ready to get the hell outta Michigan.

Hey everyone I'm in interviewing here on the 23rd!! It will be my first interview of the cycle. Is anyone flying in the day before? maybe we can meet up. Good luck everyone 😀

Can anyone here comment on the quality of OMT classes with regards to the recent class size increase? Are instructors readily available? Is it easy to "fake"/pass? Is there enough time to learn it well given the insane testing schedule, etc.?

Quality of OMT education is one of my main deciding factors in choosing to pursue the DO path, so this is very important to me.

Thanks.

What you get out of OMT here is completely up to you. There are usually enough DOs and second year students roaming around during OMM class looking for someone to help that you could get a lot of quality help if you wanted it. Or you could choose never to ask if you were doing something right and just stay confused. The the technology is also good enough here that you don't ever have a problem seeing what it is the instructor is doing.

Also there is a club on campus that is the Arizona Osteopathic Association (or something like that) that do extra instruction after every OMM class. I've never gone to it, but I hear it is helpful.

Hey Flu,

Are you planning on matriculating at AZCOM or are you planning on staying in Texas? Thanks very much for offering your advice about the interviews. I'll read through the interview feedback before my interview on Friday, but hopefully I should be good to go. I've already interviewed at UofA back in November, but this will be my first osteo interview... and one of my top choices at that. So I really hope this goes well. :xf:

Does anyone know where the rotation sites are? I know that ~40 students get sent to CORE in Ohio, but how about the rest? Does mostly everyone else stay in the AZ area? And how much elective time is there to 'audition' for residency spots?

Any input would be much appreciated.

Yeah, I do plan on going to AZCOM if I don't hear from TX on match day (Feb 1st). I like it here and am pretty familiar with the campus, but the in state tuition and to be near family is too good to turn down. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that day.

I haven't written feedback for AZCOM yet, but if you want to know how it went, just shoot me a PM.

There is no definitive list of rotation sites available. The list does, of course, exist. But they do not make it available to everyone. This is because they are constantly changing/updating the list for three reasons.

1. The old dean did not believe in paying for rotations and believed that physicians should volunteer to be preceptors. The new dean has been moving away from this and in doing so, is improving the quality of rotations available. (I don't know all of the exact details of this process, but this is what I have been told).

2. They are working on concentrating all of their rotations (except for those in Ohio) closer to the school. They are doing this because it is easier to control the quality of them if they are closer to the school. The Ohio rotations are part of the "Ohio Core" program and are monitored and maintained by them. More info about those rotations can be found here http://www.ohiocore.org/.

3. Rotations are being added and changed in order to accommodate the increased class size.

Edit: Here is a list of some of the rotation sites available from this website: http://www.midwestern.edu/250/

New rotations for Arizona hospitals include Banner System, Sun Health System, Scottsdale Healthcare System, Abrazo System, and Maricopa Integrated Health System
New rotations for rural hospitals include Yavapai Regional Medical Center (Prescott), Summit Healthcare (Show Low), Verde Valley Hospital (Cottonwood), Sierra Vista Regional Health Center, Kingman Regional Medical Center, Lake Havasu Regional Hospital

As far as the precetor thing, I talked with my father (who is a practicing gastroenterologist in the Phoenix area) about this last night, and he agreed that doctors would be much more motivated to take on students if financial reimbursement was involved. This is because docs are busy moving from one patient to another, and if they have to teach students... it slows them down considerably to have to sit and explain things. Thus it would take them much longer to get through all their patients, extending their day. Thus I think financial reimbursement for physicians only makes sense... as it's not fair to expect physicians to voluntarily extend their work day without compensation.

As far as rotations go, are all these sites available to all students? Or do students have to compete for them to see who gets first dibs? I am hoping these rotations at good locations are readily available.... as it isn't fair for the school to boast such rotation sites if only a few students have access to them... or if it is only for 1 rotation or so. It says nothing about what percent of rotations students get to do at the popular teaching hospitals.

I agree with you and your father on the reimbursement thing. I don't know how rotations are assigned yet as I am only an MSI.

ronehh, nerdsmakegraves, partydoc, or anyone else that is interviewing the end of January/beginning of February....

Just curious, when did you have your supplemental app (and everything else) turned in????

Does anyone know how often they interview?

Just waiting patiently, with my fingers crossed!!!

Good luck to all of you interviewing soon!

Speaking of which, from what I remember, a few SDNers are interviewing tomorrow, so good luck! Let us know how it goes when you get back.

My application was complete (secondary) early November.... but i should preface that i selected that Jan date bc i am interviewing at SOMA the day after and i wanted to do one trip to AZ!

Although with the "hothy" weather here in Pittsburgh i should have done two trips 😉

I don't know how often they interview, i think twice a week (?)...... give them a ring and **remind** them how interested you are and to check on your application - can't hurt!!

Good Luck!!

During lunch today one of the admissions people came to speak to us about the process, and basically told us that unlike most other schools, the interview (for the DO program) is weighted at at least 50% of your total score (other points being added from MCAT, GPA, EC's, and to my understanding secondary essays and LORs do NOT get assigned to the total points). So basically if you have lower numbers/weaker ECs but interview really well, you can still get in, but if you have good numbers/ECs with a crappy interview it can really, really hurt you. I am glad I know this now because I otherwise would have gone with the "vanilla" approach by giving somewhat safe and boring answers while relying on my numbers to do the rest -- while this works at many other schools, the interview score is weighed so heavily that doing so here simply won't work. So good luck everyone and I hope we all hear some good news soon. :xf:

Rkaz, another round of UA acceptances is due at 9 AM tomorrow morning. I'm almost tempted to check my email during the interview waiting time tomorrow, but I think that might be rude, lol. You excited? 😀

I was complete mid-November, and heard back mid- December.

The same applies at AZCOM's sister school CCOM..🙂

Thanks for the replies! Just trying to ease my own mind about when I will be hearing back. It feels like it has been FOREVER since I have turned everything in.

Thanks for the advice.

Wish all of you the best!

Today was fun. I met a lot of great people and I am definitely confident in the program now. I really hope I get in.

However, I did give a really stupid answer when asked how I got accepted into this prestigious research program as a freshman and I said I honestly didn't know and it was probably because I was good friend's with the program director's son, but one of the interviewers happened to know the program director really well then we chatted a bit off-topic about mutual acquaintances so hopefully that didn't hurt me too much.

Good luck everyone I hope we all get in!!! 👍

Hey, glad it went well. I was going to visit you during lunch but I crashed after class.

That's pretty cool that you had a connection with the interviewer. I can't see that as a negative at all; making a personal connection is a great way for them to remember you. I'm glad you had fun too. Despite knowing my way around already, I had a good time meeting the other interviewees.

Hey guys,

I'm interviewing this week and I was wondering if you guys that have already interviewed have any tips, or information that could be useful (eg if mapquest gives the wrong directions from the aiport).
Thanks.

I graduated from AZCOM in 2002. It was a great experience in every aspect. The education is as good as any medical school and the location speaks for its self. The rotations for 3rd and 4th year will always be an issue if there is not a teaching hospital solely affiliated with the school. Many of the rotations listed here as new like Kingman and Sierra Vista are at least 8years old as I did rotations at these facilities in 2000-2001. These were probably some of the best rotations as they had never had medical students at these facilities before and the hospital staff treated you as though you were one of the docs. Not to mention, the attendings treated you more like a resident than a medical student. Kingman is where I delivered a bunch of babies with Ken Jackson, MD, more circumcisions than I can recall and 1st assisted on c-sections. Overall, an excellent opportunity and glad to see it is still part of the curriculum. What is the tuition these days? My first year it was $23,000 and my last year it was $38,000, how is that for a tuition hike?

I just withdrew from the 30th interview. For any one interested in moving up their interview date, fyi.

Hey, glad to see an alumnus stop by.

There's been some talk that AZCOM is going to buy a few more rotation sites for the addtional 100 students. There's a new dean that took over so things might change in the near future.

Tuition is 43,000 I believe. Your hike was pretty crazy, but I estimate 2013 will be roughly the same at the rate of 4k a year (59k or so by graduation).

Hey glad to hear some positive feedback from an alum. Most people's experiences at AZCOM seem to be pretty positive... which is great. I'm still quite a bit concerned at the clinical rotations situation, and those concerns were not alleviated at all at my interview. I believe one of the assistant deans who presented at our interview said that we were likely to not get our first nor second preference of rotation sites (I'm assuming he was referring to core rotations here)... so that did not make me feel too good. But otherwise, my interview day experience was rather positive... and it was nice to finally meet others of you there. 🙂

I just had my SOMA interview as well, and if I am lucky enough to get accepted to both schools... then I will have a tough decision to make. I was rather impressed at the innovations they are doing there.

Rkaz, I completely agree with your assessment on the concerns about clinical rotations definitely not being alleviated after the presentation on interview day, but I guess not every program is completely perfect...

FYI if you do get into both places, read your SOMA acceptance very carefully. Unlike some other programs, SOMA actually gives you 30 days to receive a full 1k refund after signing and sending in your deposit should you decide to change your mind, so that would give you more time to think about things if you're in that type of situation. I also managed to get an extension for the deposit itself, and got the impression that the admissions office is very understanding of just how much that deposit really is.

Hey guys,

I'm interviewing this week and I was wondering if you guys that have already interviewed have any tips, or information that could be useful (eg if mapquest gives the wrong directions from the aiport).
Thanks.

When you enter the gate, go to the right parking lot and the admissions waiting room is in the Barrel I building just west of the cafeteria (so if you reach the cafeteria you've gone too far).

I accidentally went to the Glendale building clear on the other side of campus and making that trek in heels was not a fun trip 😡

Ouch, I hear ya. On my Friday interview, my heeled shoes took off chunks of my skin. I was hobbling around and lagging behind the group, and I even had to ask the admissions office for bandaids to cover my red ruptured blisters. 🙁 Three days later, and I am still having difficulty walking, and am still wearing bandages. Upon seeing me, my tour guide summed it up perfectly "Why do we women do this to ourselves?"

Ladies, make sure you are comfortable in pointy toed heel shoes before wearing them to your interviews. I am yet to find a shoe company that makes professional vegan (non-leather) comfort shoes.

PS ~ There was another fellow interviewee in our group who was really sweet, and knew that something was up with my feet. He would wait for me to catch up to the group, holding doors open for me. That was really nice... so if you are reading this, thank you. 😍

Heels...an interesting pain. I guess I'll never understand.

Speaking of tours, how did you like the weather? Other than a recent cold front, it's been really nice these past few days.

I agree with Derek, but would also point out that not having a dedicated hospital/CORE system can be a plus in other ways. (I graduated from AZCOM as well).

Let's say I wanted to do do anesthesia at Hospital X or Hospital Y out of state.

If you goto a med school with its own hospital/CORE, you will get limited exposure to X and Y b/c you are stuck at your own insistution for all of 3rd year and most of 4th year... maybe you'll get to rotate a couple of weeks at X and a couple at Y.

At AZCOM, you can rotate there for many of your rotations 3rd and 4th year and get to know the people at X and Y... etc. Some of my friends did there entire 3rd and 4th year out of state at hospitals where they ended up matching... (This often requires you setting up rotation on your own.)
