Besides the "big name" university programs, what are some good places to train?

1. Christiana
2. Hennepin
3. Maricopa
4. Cook County
5. Highlands
6. Denver (not sure if this is U Colorado)
7. Carolinas

FYI its Highland. Not Highlands (if you're talking about the one in Oakland).

USC is one of the oldest in the country and highly regarded. As is New Mexico.

I didn't know Denver and Highland are University affiliated? I thought they were powerhouse "community/county" programs.

I'm not sure if what I was asking was clear given the running joke? EM seems to a field with a lot of great residency programs that are unheard of to a medical student. At my school when I talk to people applying to EM, they are just as naive as me. Until I came to this board, I didn't know about the reputations of places like Denver, Highland, Carolinas, etc. I apologize for not knowing for what seems to be common sense information.

I don't know if its common sense.

I think on SDN in general people get touchy when someone asks about places with the "highest reputation."

Anyway, the overall answer to your question is you can't go wrong in EM. Its a great specialty because there really are no "bad programs" which isn't always true for other specialties. There were a few sketchy programs about a decade ago but they all cleaned up or disapeared.

So really you should pick your list based on location and type of program you want. University, County and Community are very different styles of learning. They are all great - it depends how you best learn. Some programs have mixed sites.

Your best bet is to first get an idea of what you want out of your training, then decide if you care about 3 or 4 years, then read some of the reviews on this site (sticky link at the top) and see what sounds good.

Forget highland (or highlands). Go with the highlander. There can only be one. They cut of the head of other residencies and absorbed their power.

The easiest way to tell the academic powerhouses is to open up a few journals and textbooks and see where the editors are authors are coming from.

...the humor comes from this being an annual question for the last 10+ years. Don't sweat it, as I wasn't aware of different programs and "powerhouse" groups until I started to do a search.

Use the search buttons and do some reading and you'll see why EM is based at, and sometimes excels at "non university" systems 🙂.

Also look at programs with very loose academic affiliations but are at community county hospitals like Harbor-UCLA or St. Luke's Roosevelts (ties to Columbia)

Thanks for the contributions everyone. I was going through SAEM, and is looking for the number of ED visits per year a criteria you guys looked at when applying? The program that I really like has only 41K/year wheras others I really like has nearly 80k...
