C/O 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Whelp...I might as well admit this out loud...I've decided not to apply this year. 🙁

As the deadline gets closer and closer, I was feeling less and less sure about applying. Finally figured it out that I'm terrified at the debt and financial repercussions that vet school will have on my life and family. At this point, I've decided to not apply and will explore other career options. Not going to count vet school out yet, but I'm definitely out this cycle.

Good luck to everyone applying this year. I'm definitely sticking around SDN and will be cheering you on for sure! 🙂

🙁 Sorry to hear that Philliab. I can't even imagine how hard that decision must have been. Like everyone else said, you're gonna rock whatever career path you decide to go down. 🙂

🙁 Sad that you are not a potential classmate

But I am certain you will amazing at whatever you do. 🙂

Sorry to hear that Philiab 🙁 I know how hard of a decision that must be to make. Whatever you decide to do you will be AWESOME at 🙂

I've made that decision before, too (in 2008! ...and here I am.). It's hard. Bravo to you for taking more time to figure things out.

Since you're sticking around, it would be a great help to morale (IMO) if you would make your current avatar your permanent avatar.

You guys are awesome! Thank you 😍

This decision has been incredibly hard and involved a lot of tears, but it's the best decision as this point. I know how unhappy a person I am with debt hanging over my head, and I just know I won't enjoy it with that much pressure. Maybe in a couple years when hubby is finished with graduate school and has a well-paying job (fingers crossed)...

I'm certainly not closing the door completely at this point, but at 28, I am very ready to settle into a career. Now...does anyone know a way to make a living (aka money) with horses? Cause if so, I'm all ears.

But seriously you all are awesome! I know you're gonna rock this application cycle and be amazing vets! Good luck! :luck: And maybe I will keep my current avatar if it helps morale. 😉

1. Determine whether you are independently wealthy?
- if yes, skip to question 3

2. Marry well, very well

3. Invest a lot of money and time in horses.***

4. Dream about somehow making a lot of money off horses for the next 5-60 years.

5. Realize you will never make money off horses.

6. Realize you love your horse hobby too much to give it up.

*** note 1 out of every 1000000000 times this will lead to making anywhere between $40 and $4 million off horses******

 Failed at 1 and 2. Definitely have done 3, 4, 5, and 6. Still not giving up though. I'm even ok with the idea of breaking even.

Supplementals submitted: 3/5

Now to completely not think about applications for a week while I do the touristy thing around Ireland. 😀

Sorry to hear this, Philliab. Whatever you decide to do, you will do great!! You just have to do what you feel is the best for you. Just promise to stick around SDN with all of us. 🙂

Best of luck in whatever you decide to do. :luck:

My plan is to submit my application before classes start in September, but I definitely won't have all my LORs by then. One of them won't be started until then, actually, since I need to meet with the professor and talk about what he's going to write.

I would hesitate at submitting your application before your recommendations are submitted. IIRC, you can't change your evaluators after you submit it and a decent number of applicants have issues with getting the LORs. You can't beg a new person to write you a fast LOR because someone flaked if you have already submitted.

I actually told my LOR writers that I wanted to be complete by Sept. 1st, which took a lot of the stress off of me when all of the external factors were sorted by then. But I definitely waited until all of the evaluations were complete before submitting.

I actually did not know all of this. I was under the impression they accepted more than 10. Thank you for letting me know. 🙂

10 matriculate. More than 10 are accepted. The OOS waitlist had a fair amount of movement this year. 😎

Hopefully I should have 5 of the 6 by then. And the 6th has agreed to write for me, we just need to meet to discuss what he should focus on in writing it.

This all made me giggle a bit....you see, I thought that I could make a living working with horses when I came to horse country. Then after a long time (cause I'm stubborn), I realized that I needed things....like clothes and to pay bills....sigh🙄

Also want to wish Philliab the best! It is a tough decision to have to make.

BTW, DVMD....I rather like your new avatar:wow:

Had that moment today when someone reads your PS and doesn't hate it. Lifted the dread I have had for a week.

Thanks to you both. 🙂 I'm doing my best not to make any rash decisions at this point, which is crazy hard for me. But I'm definitely sticking around SDN 'cause you guys are just too cool. And I have a feeling that some part of vet medicine will have a place in my future career.

Go get 'em C/O 2017'ers!

Wow, I can't believe how fast the summer flew by.

First time applicant
Applying to Tennessee- IS and Mizzou- my number 1 choice.. A little worried that I might be making a mistake by only applying to 2 schools.. Any input on this is greatly appreciated!

Haven't started my PS, I get anxiety just thinking about it.. Not really, but I'm sure y'all know what I mean! Super nervous and have no idea what to say!

Submitted my UT supplemental, halfway through my Mizzou supplemental and halfway though the VMCAS.

ELORs requested.

Ahhh just typing this makes me want A stiff drink!

I agree, the summer seems to have flown by! I haven't worked on my ps for a while and I have hardly anything done... probably should get on that 😳 good luck on your writing!

I'm feeling okay with my PS, but all those supplemental essays? ugh. Need to get the notes I have written for some of them into something more like complete sentences. And then figure out what I'm going to talk about for the rest.

SAME HERE! Some of them I just need to edit and I won't. I swear I will get them mostly done this week.

Oy...supplementals lol. I have all but one written, and I have absolutely NO idea what to say for this last one.

Spent a lot of time the past two days brainstorming for my PS and supp. Essays. I have a list of experiences and such that are possible points to be made. Anyone willing to look over it and give their opinion? Really wanting to know if there are red flags ie: leave that out 👎 👎 Or golden things to focus on most. 👍 👍

Thanks in advance! :luck::xf:

Omg me too! I swear I've had minor anxiety the past three days about this application!! Love the big bang theory btw, best show ever!

Getting so impatient over my GRE scores and it's only been 4 days. Don't know what I'm going to do after October 2nd!
Probably just going to have to overwhelm my schedule so I don't think about it too much. I have never been a patient person!

Scrapping my original PS and completely rewriting it. At least I have an outline/better flow to use this time. We'll see if this one sucks a little less.

 Failed at 1 and 2. Definitely have done 3, 4, 5, and 6. Still not giving up though. I'm even ok with the idea of breaking even.

Just saw this. too true. I'm totally gonna break even on horses...

Only need a conclusion on my brand new PS and then maybe I'll have the start of one that doesn't blow!

I hate my personal statement. I think it answers the question and it's well written enough. But it's not pretty, dangit, and that upsets me!

Also, I'm hitting no-more-procrastination time (I want to get my stuff submitted before I go back to school on Monday), and I'm not liking that much, either.

Yeah... I was hoping for that, but it's definitely not happening. I'm done with work as of tomorrow and don't have another job for the semester, so hopefully I can get a lot done before I start back up next Wednesday.

Got official GRE scores online today and submitted VMRCVM supplemental and Wisconsin RADF this evening. Feeling accomplished for the day!

I wish I had been that productive today! Every time I sat down between classes to work on my app something would come up, like the wifi was down, or I had left my water bottle in a different building. Hoping tomorrow will be more productive!!

Nice! I submitted my last 2 supplementals the other day, but felt more frustrated than productive. Stupid formatting. 😡

Finally finished entering in my experiences!! I spent a lot of time breaking down & calculating my hours spent at one job which I had 4 roles throughout my 4 years there. Turned out to be an estimated 5700 hours of work! Whew, so glad I'm done with that section. Now it's time to focus on my personal statement!!

Does anyone know if there's a CSU thread for C/O 2017? I tried searching for it and don't see one

I submitted my VMCAS application!

On to the supplementals and the PhD program app!

So, I read that the VMRCVM suppl has to be completed in one sitting, but can you go to it and print it out so you can work on it at your leisure and then cut & paste when ready to submit?

I'd imagine you could if you leave the window open--don't know if the page would time out, though? But, really, if you have an idea in mind about why VMRCVM, it should like like 15 minutes. There's space for about a sentence or two on why VMRCVM, details on research not under vet or animal experience (but you get about 60 characters for each), and a few yes/no questions. Super simple.

I'm in a similar boat as you, and I'm just curious how you formatted this. Did you put it in different experiences for each role, or did you just list them under one entering?

I put all of mine under one big blob, and I'm having a hard time keeping to the character count with all I've done in more than one role!

Thanks!

I emailed VMCAS and they said that if the roles you had were significantly different then it was appropriate to list them separately, so I listed them each separate and had detailed descriptions of my roles. Hope this helps!! :luck: :xf:

Is there a required amount of vet experience hours for University of Minnesota? I currently have 438 hours.

I almost threw up. I need to get my butt in gear.....

Same here. I don't think I can send my supplementals and application in until I sign up for my online class. That would be September 19th. UGH

You guys! My goal is to bust my ass this week! Chya?

Me too. I want to have my PS mostly finished by Wed and a start/outline to all my supplemental essays. That would be nice. But I think it's also just way wishful thinking.
