C/O 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you remember when the supplemental from last year went up? It seems all they have now is last year's still up.
I get the impression that they have their own forms or something and don't just want straight up letters? Or is that just if you use their direct application instead of the supplemental/VMCAS? I'm going to do through VMCAS and the supplemental also.

I think their supplemental goes up July 1st. As far as applications go, I believe if you're in state you just use their application, but if you're OOS you fill out VMCAS and the supplemental.

If I am remembering correctly, I want to say Missouri's supp went up like in July? I remember it wasn't due until like November or something.

Here is exactly what they say about the whole direct application vs. vmcas plus supplemental.

"PLEASE NOTE: If you are a Missouri Resident you must use the Direct Application. If you are not a Missouri Resident and you have not used VMCAS, you may use the Direct Application. If you have used VMCAS you must use the Supplemental Application."

They just used my recommendations from vmcas I didn't have to send them any more with the supplemental (and I think it was Missouri that if you didn't have a vet as a recommender in vmcas you then needed to send one from a vet directly to them but I'm not positive that was them its hard to keep all the school straight but it mentioned it in the supplemental) yeah they still have the stuff up for last years application but it says that last year the application opened July 1st so probably around then.

I think you have to have a vet on vmcas. It's 3:30am and I don't feel well so bear with me. But I am pretty positive you have to have one?

I'm not sure if vmcas requires it but I think every school I applied to required a letter from a vet so it pretty much means that you have to have a vet recommendation registered on there. I thought that was strange on whatever supplemental said that (I think it was missouri but I don't think I still have all my supplemental applications so it would be hard to check).

At least in my spreadsheet, I have some of the schools I'm applying to as only recommending a letter from a vet, but it seems like something that would be a very glaring negative on your application to not have one and something that schools would definitely question you about if you still managed to get an interview.

Also, thanks for the July 1 info on Mizzou's supplement. Guess I missed that on their site.

Oh so i guess that makes sense for them to request a vet then if you don't already have one since some schools only recommend that you have one (I don't know if I applied to any of those or maybe I just didn't read the requirements closely enough ) . But most people will already have one on vmcas. And I'm not positive that it opens this year July 1st thats just when it opened last year so it should be around then as long as they are keeping the same schedule.

Unless the vmcas has changed that much, you need at least 3 (minimum) letters. Most schools want one of those from a vet.

So if I totally bomb the GRE, will a strong GPA help counteract that?

I don't feel ready for it, but I think I need to just get it out of the way while I still have time to retake it if needed.

As far as I know, not if you bomb it. But if they aren't super strong, yes your GPA can save it.

"bomb" being a relative term, lol. I suppose what I should've said was "do poorly" or "not well." 😉

So like "bomb" by crazy over-achiever pre-vet standards.
(I can say this 'cause I 100% am one, too)

True story... all of it 👍

Has anyone looked at Auburn's Supplemental yet? I opened the pdf to look it over and it says:

"In paragraph form, please attach a separate sheet to respond to the
following question.

Forms should be returned to the Office of Academic Affairs at the address
listed above."

So where's the question?!?! Is this just me?

I think it's been the same for the past several years, so here's the question from last year: "Why do you wish to enroll in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University?"

Yep. 👍

Just got an email back from Missouri. They don't have any such requirement for an employer LOR, despite what VMCAS says, apparently.

Starting July 1st, I am going to commit myself to studying for the GRE. Again. Vomit.

Seriously, moosh. When did we become the authoritative figure on applications?!

I haven't even met 1/3 of my class yet!! Lol (and already being judged as a Trojan. Sigh)

Right? It's kind of crazy that we're giving advice when we were just asking for it. We have a new volunteer at the equine practice I work one day a week at, and the vet was like "Oh, this is the girl I was telling you about. She's going to vet school in the fall so feel free to ask her any questions about the process and whatnot." Pressure is on. I'm also the source of info for the two interns at the other practice I work at...I feel kind of bad cause I'm completely honest and tell them that it's a demanding process and that you have to try not to expect things, but I feel like it's something I wish I had known before hand.

You're an aggie now!

Exactly!!! I found it funny that out of ALLL the schools that people applied from, I was the one pin pointed!!! Oh well. That rivalry never dies.

And this might be a stupid question, but Aggie stands for agriculture, right? There's no Aggie horse??

Hi everyone! This is my third (ugh) time applying but I thought I would introduce myself to everyone else who is applying this year! I'm an MD resident and I'm also preparing to retake the GRE in the new format...but I'm trying to stay positive! We can do ittt! 😀 Anyone have any tips for the new GRE?

As far as I know, yes.

Speaking of... when are you crazy 2017-ers going to start your individual school threads?!

Just stay calm during the entire thing! Sometimes when I am taking a test in a new class/format, I psych myself out. If you are like me and can some times freeze during the first question, now you have the option to flag it and go back! This way you can calm yourself down and allot the amount of time you feel necessary to each question. I ran into the time problem with the old GRE where I would freeze and guess on a math question that I "thought" I didn't know just because I was worried about time and then find myself with 5 minutes left over. If you see a question and freeze, don't be afraid to take a breather and collect yourself! Being able to go back and redo/check questions was what helped me increase my score by ~140 points.

Also, I shelled out the $20 or so for kaplan vocab flashcards. Completely worth it. Do as much vocab as you can and use those words in your writing! GOOD LUCK!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!! :highfive:

Ugh....me too🙁 I am completely unmotivated right now....not sure about my schools yet, need to register for the GRE and get my vmcas app done. Luckily (or unluckily) I have my copy from last year. Good on my PS and my Auburn supp paragraph I think. I really just want to sit around and read books and veg (when not at work).

Blah?!

Has anyone started on their essays for Tufts? I had a couple of questions about it....the first one being if you don't have any job experience that is not animal experience then do you just leave that short answer blank?

I guess the second one really isn't a question but more of a rant. I always get writer's block when it comes to questions like "What makes you unique?" "What makes you stand out from 3000 people?" I don't know how to answer that without coming off like an arrogant person...or is that how they want us to come off? Like selling ourselves? Maybe I am over thinking it.

For the shorter essay questions, I always just said something like "I didn't take any vacations besides summer breaks throughout school" or whatever. I didn't feel comfortable not answering the question, so I just said that it didn't apply to me in one sentence.

And to help with that, yes, sell yourself. I can PM you what they told me they were looking for that question. I think it was that one at least. The year before, my essay was awesome cause I just talked about being abroad for a year and I was told they really liked that I thought outside the box and didn't talk about any vet related. This year, I got kind of a different response because there is a new person working in admissions.

Ugh! I need to start my supplemental essays for both Auburn and Tufts. And finish my personal statement. and the rest of my VMCAS. Thanks for reminding me. :/

Still waiting on my advisor's feedback on LORs, and I don't want to work on my Cornell supplement until I figure out who's going to write my letters since that's on the first page. Maybe I'll fill out at least some of the experience section today?

I also need to start my supplemental essays. Oy. I was so excited to start filling out the application this year, but I've just hit a wall of absolute laziness. When I get home from work I feel like doing absolutely nothing. And every time I start thinking about essays and "where do I picture myself in X years" or what have you, I just think "oh heck, I don't know!" But of course, I can't simply write that lol.

Soooo happy we still have a few months to work on this thing.

At this point last year, I hadn't even begun deciding if I was applying or not. You have time, but kudos to y'all for getting the ball rolling. You'll thank yourselves later.

I agree. Lol I just want to keep it in perspective that there is still time so don't beat yourself up that you still have to do supplementals. If that's what you still have left you are in awesome shape😀

Lol. I think about this time I wrote some little splurb about why vet med, several months later (september lol) wrote the real thing, then used the splurb and made it pretty.

Everyone take very slow and long breaths. It's not even July yet!!! You'll die of stress before you're even accepted! 😱

The best advice I can give is to make sure to go ahead and pick an answer on questions you freeze on and then hit the "mark" button before moving onto another question. This will ensure that you at least have a possibility of getting a right answer if there isn't time to go back and an easy way to return to that question if you do have time. If there is time when you finish a screen pops up with all the question numbers and shows which one/ones you marked for ease of finding those troublesome questions. Good Luck!

Is anyone else on here applying to Auburn? I was looking at the supplemental application and...well..am I just missing the question we are supposed to be answering? I'm sick, so it's entirely possible I just can't read.

Why do you wish to enroll in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University?

Someone else asked that earlier. I will be reapplying there again this year. Sigh.

Well, that's a silly question. I wish to enroll because it's a vet school and I want to go to vet school. Derp.
