c/o 2018 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I feel like I have come to a screeching halt when it comes to applications... I have to study for the GRE (I am taking it on 7/31) and write my personal statement, but I am seriously lacking motivation to do either. This kind of scares me :/

I'm feeling the same way. I haven't felt motivated to complete all the supplemental applications, either. I'm planning to take the GRE in August, but I've been slacking on studying for it. I'll probably sign up for an online GRE class to force myself to study. And I haven't looked at my personal statement recently. I think I'll continue ignoring my personal statement for now.

At least I've been racking up more vet experience hours. And I'm taking several classes, one of which will replace an old F, from >7 years ago (I'm mostly applying to schools that replace Fs rather than average Fs with new grades).

I ended up changing the date for the GRE to the day before classes start to give me a little more time to study. It cost me $50, but I would rather do well than have to pay another $160 to retake it.

I sent my previous personal statement out to a couple of SDNer's to look at, to see if it needs to be totally scratched or can be reworked. I got some helpful feed back (Thanks KPowell 😀 ), so I guess I will rework that when I have some time!

Hope everyone is chugging along.

Random question.. but has anyone had to give a friendly reminder to their LOR writers? I don't know how to say it without being extremely annoying:\

Don't be pushy, but you should remind them. If it makes you feel naggy so be it, you'll feel worse if you don't send reminders and they don't get it done. I sent an e-mail every 2-3 weeks touching base with each of mine until they were submitted. No big deal, just be polite.

About right

👍👍 It took me four months to write mine. It's very challenging to meet the requirements of the prompt, while simultaneously being true to your own story and voice. Although the supplemental essays require effort, I find them nowhere near as arduous as the PS.

Hang in there, and keep at it 🙂

Thanks LV!

I actually wrote most of a draft today that I didn't completely hate. I'm just gonna fix it up then send it out for some help. 🙂

Finished both my applications (TMDSAS and VMCAS, ugh) and the three supplemental applications for the schools I KNOW I'm going to apply to...but had to drop KSU, sadly. Not sure where else I should apply. My stats, grade-wise, aren't great, so I'm having trouble deciding. Excellent Last 45 hours (which mostly includes my graduate courses and some non-science post-bacc courses), mediocre cGPA, and dismal sciGPA. GRE is so-so, but I'm retaking it in a few weeks. -sigh- I'm trying to decide between Penn...Illinois...or maybe Michigan. This is so nerve-racking, haha. ._.

Did you do the SIS score thing on Mich State's site? It will give you an approximate score and let you kino ugh if you will considered a competitive candidate.

Good luck!

Speaking of the SIS for MSU, did the competitive level increase for this cycle? I could have sworn last cycle it was 750 and now it is 800.

(here's the link for you epivet: http://cvm.msu.edu/student-information/dvm-program-admissions/scholastic-indicator-score-calculator)

Thank you both! I have already done the SIS score and I got an ~880 with my current grades and GRE score. I just don't know if that'll be competitive enough...especially since my science pre-reqs for them are subpar. That and I would need to take Cell Bio, which I can do online...but it's a pretty penny...even if I have until Spring of next year to complete it. Blegh. Can I just turn back the clock and redo my undergraduate career and actually give a hoot about the classes this time around, haha? 😛

If it makes you feel any better, my SIS score last year was 875 and I got into Michigan State in early December. Not sure what the rest of your application looks like, but I'd say that score is competitive!

Good luck Class of 2018! 😀

Just do your best, from what I've seen you all are great people and you'll blow them away at interview.

Rake in ALL the acceptances!

Oh! That's very good to know. As far as experience, I have 4,730 hrs. in small animal,
570 hrs. in wildlife (white-tailed and axis deer), 415 hrs. in large animal/equine, 32 hrs. in food production, and about 120 hrs. exotic (mainly pet birds). I also have thousands of hours combined of animal experience with cats, dogs, reptiles, birds, horses, cattle, wildlife, and other exotics. I've been a collegiate tutor, after-school mentor for kids in a impoverished area, and have done advocacy work for people with disabilities. I also completed my Master's in Public Health in Epidemiology and hope to work for the CDC as a veterinary epidemiology...so kind of taking an alternate route in vet med. 🙂 Maybe I will go ahead and throw my lot in with Michigan and hope for the best!

Thank you!

Well guys....I've been absent from the board for a while.... but today I finally submitted my VMCAS app!! I still have two eLOR that aren't in yet, but one should be submitted this week, and hopefully the third will be soon to follow!!! Almost done with one of my supp apps (only 4 more to go after that 😉 )

I'm both SOOOOO terribly excited, and SOOOOO terribly nervous!!! :scared:😍

I think you have a great chance at Michigan State (and other schools) imo. If it's a school you think you'll like - apply!

*sigh* Got in a tiff with my boyfriend last night about how serious I am about going to Vet school. He said that he thinks that I am not taking it very seriously because I am not working hard enough on my apps or studying for the GRE. I told him that he did not understand and he went on about how he knows fully well because he struggled to get into his Graduate program. He worked hard, but he was also able to talk them into letting him into another program and then transfer in when he proved he could hack it at grad courses. He does not understand that this process is *slightly* different.

This all came from me realizing that I re-scheduled my GRE for the day after this concert I refuse to miss (It is the Backstreet Boys 20th Anniversary Tour... don't judge 😉 ). The GRE is not until 1:30pm the next day. He told me that if he was me he would go to the internship and as soon as he came home study for the GRE until I go to bed and keep doing that until the test. I just cannot do that, I am already feeling burnt out. He apologized to me, but I think that was just because I had a melt down. Oh well...

He's probably just feeling stressed, don't let it get you. Frankly, I think that's a fine plan. Yeah, you gotta put in the work, but everyone needs some r&r. Especially the night before the test, what more could you do at that point? Go have fun at your concert and relax before the next day.

Umm... (a) It's BSB ARE YOU KIDDING ME. (b) you'll go insane if it's all you think about, just go crazy studying beforehand and then rock it out the night before (but then get good sleep and a good breakfast)

EVERYBOOOOODDYYY YEAAAHHHHHHH 😍

Haha! I scheduled my GRE 3 days before the BSB concert on August 15th, to act as a gift to myself for getting through the GRE. It makes all the studying bearable.

I know right? It is the Backstreet Boys and I am in the first row (behind the pit... too old to be in that mess) 😀

I am totally feeling the love and the support... I <3 you guys 😍

I'm definitely giving it serious consideration. I emailed admissions and have sent my GPA calculations (I did them all on Excel 'cause I'm neurotic like that) to make sure they're correct and to kind of get a feel for my chances. We'll see what I get back.

Dang! You sound like you have an amazing application!

Aw, thank you! I'm doubting it with my grades, but I'm trying to stay optimistic and make myself shine in other places. Here's hoping I can crush the Q section of the GRE in a couple of weeks. 👍

Just submitted my VMCAS app!!:scared::soexcited: Now I'm just waiting on my last two eLORs and have to finish my UCD and WSU supplementals and I'll be all done 🙂 Then let the waiting game begin 🙁

YAY congratulations! 👍 I finally finished the rough draft of my PS last night and I feel like a huge load has been taken off my shoulders even though it's not completely ready 🙄

I take my summer course finals on Friday and have a Physics project due in Monday and then I can finish my apps! 👍 I'm so jealous that you guys are so much further along than me! High fives!

Thanks for the congratulations!😍 Good luck to everyone on finishing up apps:luck:

Hey guys, so I have lurked on here a while and I have a question about my personal statement. I was pre vet my freshman year and shadowed with both small animal vets and equine vets and liked it, but the next summer I shadowed with a few medical doctors to try it out and that is how I really decided I wanted to do veterinary medicine was by realizing how much I preferred it to human medicine (there are several reasons I won't get into). Should I include this shadowing with medical doctors on my application in the and would it be bad to reference it in my PS to show how I definitively decided on vet school? I don't want to look wishy washy. Thanks for your help!

I would think it's good to show that you really know what you're getting into with the profession, so I think you should include it. Also, none of my real interviews asked this, but my undergrad's mock interview had a question about "Why not human medicine?" so it's clearly something valuable to know for yourself. Just be sure you're adding enough about "Why vet med?" within the character limit, too.

I agree with EC.. I would just make sure that you focus mainly on the positives of vet med and not the negatives of human med. I've read several places about people saying something along the lines of " I didn't like human med because you work with people all day and I'd rather work with animals" - or something of that nature ... Which is a big No No.. These animals have humans that you must work with in order for them to receive care! I would definitely be prepared to talk about the differences in human med vs vet med in interviews.. Your setting yourself up for that question!

Just wanted to check in and say hi :hello:

Hope everyone is enjoying the last of the summer and are chipping away at apps.

Hey guys! This is my first post but I've pretty much been browsing around SDN forever. I just had to make the difficult choice of deciding not to apply this year although I think overall it's better for me to wait until after I've graduated next year.

I still love reading through all these posts though. 🙂 Good luck to all you guys! 🙂

Hello everyone! I am applying to vet schools this year, so I thought I would join and say hi.. I am a non-traditional applicant, age 26, and OOS all the way b/c I am a NJ resident, so I am very nervous about the whole process! 🙁

I'm only applying to 3 - 4 schools based on OOS acceptance rates: UPenn, Tufts, Ohio State. I am also applying to UC Davis as a long shot because my boyfriend's company has an office near there and could possibly transfer there.

A little more about myself...
I got my BA in history and art and worked in finance for a year and a half before returning to school to take science pre-reqs.
I've been working full time as a vet tech in a small animal/exotics hospital while taking classes for the last 2 years = 2300 hours.
Science GPA: 3.978
Overall GPA: 3.583

I am taking the GRE for the 1st time in 2 weeks, and I've been studying really hard but I'm SUPER nervous! I am much stronger at math despite the fact that I originally pursued a BA in the humanities... probably should have taken that as a sign! 🙂

I'm taking it next week...haha really hoping it goes well :xf:

Don't have too much to report, just editing away at my application. And noticing how close september 1st is!

Congrats to those submitted!

And good luck on your GRE, jsgirl and iso! :luck:

Agree with DalmationDoc... when did September 1st get so close?! eeek

I keep obsessing over whether to re-take the GRE or not... just found out my scores and they're very borderline. Would y'all re-take the GRE if you got a 159 V, 156 Q, and 6.0 writing? I didn't study much so I think I could raise the V and Q a little bit, but I'm afraid I'll never manage another perfect score on the writing... sigh

Just finished up summer courses on Tuesday (all A's whoo hoo!!) so I'm buckling down for apps now. Two weeks until second GRE and like three until VMCAS! Time sure flew 😱

If it were me? No. I think the Q & V is good, and the A is obviously perfect. I don't think I'd risk it. Are the schools you're applying to weigh the GRE heavily? Or certain sections? Like Texas A&M for example. They weigh the Quant and Writing section more than the Verbal.

I wouldn't. I'd be happy to have those scores! Re-taking that devil test on tuesday :scared:

same dilemma here actually... except im not in as nice a situation ahha. 154 V, 162 Q, and 5.0 writing. those darn reading comps just get me 😡

I think yours sound pretty good as well. Obviously the verbal is not exceptional but still fine. Although what matters most is what schools you apply to and how they weigh the GRE/what their average accepted student scores on it.

And oh wow! Lots of people taking it still. Good luck guys:luck::luck::luck:

I'm OOS everywhere too due to living in Arizona so I know how you feel about that! I think you're going the right route with finding schools that have big acceptance rates of OOS. It eases some of the anxiety off. Good luck!
