CLASS OF 2013....how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Im shy at first, once I get to know people then I open up a lot 🙂

If you guys have any specific social event ideas feel free to message them to me we'd love the input!

Yes but I still won't ever forgive you for abandoning me in the grey, drizzly, depressing wasteland that is Minnesota for Davis, California -- Yuck! After I had already committed to here. 🙁 Think of all the fun times we could have had together...

🙁 technically I had already committed to Mn too. They got my money on that one 🙁. If it makes you feel better Davis has been an oven since the day I got up here. This week FINALLY had decent weather.

Yeah it was hot and humid here until last week too. Now it is 45, grey and drizzling 24/7. Reminds me of the 6 month winters in Seattle. Yuck.🙁

Humid?

What GeeQued means is that it has been 100F with less than 30% humidity. 😉

Except this past week, it was really nice this past week! 😀
This week has been amazing, minus our lecture hall being like 30 degrees.

Goodness I cant believe its been a year since I submitted my applications where the heck did the year go. Pretty soon you'll have a thread on acceptances.

I know! I'd be happy to put up an SDNer for a night at my place =) I can't wait until people start hearing back about their apps... that's when I really felt like I was on a roller coaster!

Back to the topic: I love UC Davis! I've met some really great people (many from SDN!) and while I am really stressed out about the pchem exam on Monday I am taking a break to go to a Masquerade Ball hosted by the 3rd year vet students as a fundraiser. Do I study every day? Yes. Do I constantly feel behind? Yes. You get used to it and just do what you can. 🙂 Anatomy is turning out to be one of my favorite classes (it's so HARD to find & identify all the little divets and projections on bones and all the locations of the muscles) but it's so much fun! Even the professors in pchem are awesome. I'm sure I could write a book about my first month of classes & everything that's going on but I need to get back to studying! 😛

P.S. Anybody with questions about UC Davis is welcome to PM me too!

Yes it is very important to figure out how to fit your life back into your schedule. Whenever it will fit that is. That is a very funny sounding concept, trying to fit ones life BACK into their schedule, like it was not already part of it. But in so many ways it is true once you start actually doing vet school -- and oh so important!

I honestly don't have a recollection of what day it is. I just open my calender of classes from the school to know what I'm doing that day, if I get done early great it means pony time after studying, I feel overwhelmed yes but difference between now and undergrad is I feel theses classes are relevant, they make sense, and each class builds upon another. Heck we were talking about something in pchem the other day and I was like we just talked about this and then realized it was from histo or something.

I agree. We have a lot of overlap between classes, and it's annoying sometimes but mostly it just serves to drive the point home. We have a case studies class where we pretty much randomly go over patient cases, but often it will be related to something we learned in histo or anat that week.

I've heard from a lot of people that they hate the first few years of vet school so much because nothing is relevant.... I feel the exact opposite! I think everything is very relevant, and I really enjoy learning it.

i know it's midterms, but keep 'em coming y'all.....we haven't heard from nearly every school yet.

Currently on Fall Break - 4 days of no classes (go back tomorrow) - No exams for 2 weeks. I'm LOVING this.

I can't believe how fast it's all going. We end classes first week after Thanksgiving - then Semester 1 will be over.

Just have to pick up this damn parasitology grade.

well I just found this thread, and I bet flyhi was wondering where I disappeared to! lol. So here's my experiences so far.

Just got off of fall break, which was awesome to actually have time off! We started on Aug. 20th or so, so we've been in school for 7 weeks now. I've had 8 tests and 4 quizzes now. We pretty much have a test and quiz every week...this includes practicals as well. But I'm doing really great so far 😀

LSU is on block schedule, so our classes are staggered. I've completed 2 classes already, and am currently taking 4 classes. It's been pretty rough....lots of studying....but honestly I still manage to get 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night and usually I sleep about 4-5 hours before a test. And the amazing thing is I rarely drink caffeine....I drink Cranergy! hehe.

But I do love vet school (excpet for biochem, lol). I am still getting used to being out of my home state (FL) and away from my boyfriend....but he is amazing and everything is going so well with us....so long distance relationships while in vet school ARE POSSIBLE!!!

There are so many opportunities available to you through the school and LOTS of FREE FOOD alllll the time! (Lunch meetings). Everyone is so nice, and all my teachers give us learning objectives so we know what to focus on before the test. OH! and the best part is your big sibling will give you old test files from all the classes so you have those to study from too!

So in summary, lol, so far vet school is everything I expected it to be and more. Except I actually have more free time than I thought I would. You can't be studying ALLLL the time...you need some YOU time too! So if you are good at time maintenace, like I am, you should be able to do well and still get sleep! And most importantly...HAVE FUN!

Uh I think you know my response to that -- answer your e-mails ML! 😀

For the rest, it is amazinly not all that bad at all! Actually easier than grad school for sure. Or, maybe because of grad school, it has been review so far. KEF148 and I were classmates at CSU, so that may well explain our perspective. Shout out for Fort Fun! For those applying this year, SERIOUSLY look into the plan B MS program at Colorado State as a fallback. It is a program DESIGNED AROUND people like us, pre-vet/ pre-primate medicine people, and is a 1 year non-thesis program. But, it is a kick ass hard program, and this entering year there were 619 applications for 50 slots, and this includes the pre-med weannabees.

2/207th of a veterinarian. Yippee!

Is this the biomedical sciences-veterinary masters program??? I was looking into it today and wanted to know which specific program you were referring to so I could find out more info. Thanks!

I did walk into the main office today at UF and saw all those transcripts on the desk from the applicants for this year.

I am happy I am not in that pile this year! But it was also making me very humble- it grounded me and reminded me as where I've come from, where I have been and where I am.

I wish all of the applicants this year the best of luck- and Never, EVER give up on your dream. Do not ever let anyone tell you you can not do this. Good luck everyone!!!

Yes it is, and I am surprised how many people in vet school I have met who have done it. It is awesome, really!

Thank you Philomycus!!! I needed that inspiration!!!😀 I am sure my transcripts were in that pile!!!

How's that weather treating you now??:meanie:

I don't think I've seen any Mizzou 2013ers chime in. They keep you all locked away in the basement all day. Almost never get to see you all. 😉

Hey all,

I thought I would add my two cents in from Ross 🙂. Interesting question because I have been wondering myself how I like vet school. There are things I don't like: being away from my animals except for the two cats I brought who are bored and depressed (it makes me feel awful); the difficulty of living in a foreign, practically third-world country having left all friends and family behind; not ever feeling like the day is "done" and you can relax, and the awful competitiveness between students. There are things I like: the classes. The earlier poster who said that you will like vet school "no ifs, ands or buts," IMHO, is not being fair. Vet school is not just class and studies. LOL, I WISH I could study more rather than having to deal with St. Kitts all the time about every little thing (don't get me started about car issues. I have been dealing with them since I arrived and it is a time-sucking nightmare). So, do I like vet school? I don't dislike vet school. Am I happy? No. Do I want to be a vet? Absolutely.

thanks for chiming in...i was wondering how you were liking it since there never is as much feedback from Ross, SGU, etc. A couple of questions, if you dont mind....do you think dealing with the 3rd worldness of it all has a definite negative impact for you? Interesting you mention the competitiveness. It has always seemed as though vet students in the US thought is was less competitive among students than undergrad. Do you attribute this to knowing that Ross has a fair amount of attrition?

Sorry about your car 😡 I could only imagine how difficult it must be to study and just be a student with all of the distractions and challenges you must face down there.

Good Luck! :luck:

Trust me there are plently of vet school students that can be competitive *****hats. Anything to get that internship...😳

Just out of curousity is anyone having any issues with their lab partners? Mines not going so well and completely clueless on how to approach it I've worked with 1000s of people under different contexts and even if people in the group didnt like each other we were still a functional lab group whereas here its just completely awful where I feel like I'm not even aloud to open my mouth in lab because it'll be against what she believes in or gets offended (all of our convos are strictly related to vet med or our classes)

Uh yeah I am having similar problems with mine. Part of it may be that since I have already done anatomy so many times before I get bored and want to just get the job done ASAP. Also, I tend to get dragged off by other people to help them identify on their dog/cat. But yes, my "political" views seem so far to be in diametric oppoition to the people I have happened to been paired up with, both times. It is a bit frustrating to not really be allowed to open my mouth around them, or to procede through the dissection at a normal pace. 😳 There are many people I get on with famously in my class, just it seems not those I have been teamed up with. 🙁 Such is life. 😎

You can try just doing your part in dissecting your dog. But remember that there is no written rule that you have to study with your lab partners. I got along fine with my lab partners but found it worked better for me to study with other people.

Maybe your "normal" dissection pace is way faster than what people who've never dissected before can do. Not getting along politically is a separate issue. But speaking as a slow dissector/slow person in lab in general, it really sucks when your lab partner(s) want(s) to speed through something and makes your life crappy if you need to go slower. Later on, when you can chose your own partners, it's usually better. But I'd just like to put a plea out there to cut your labmates a break. If it's really abysmally slow for you and you know the stuff, you can always just leave lab. I'd rather have a labmate leave if they wanted to than have them hang around harassing me and ruining my learning time.

I'm not so much concerned/bothered by our pace in lab, more so the fact that I get emails saying how much I offended her after each lab because another classmate and I were having a discussion on something completely relevant to veterinary medicine that she does not support. I've been cut twice in lab by her, which I'm sorry but if you cut someone once thats a mistake but twice and several near misses I dont feel comfortable working when she has a scalpel in her hand. I stopped carrying on a conversation with her in lab since everytime I did I got an email about it and she doesn't do a lot of the hands on work since about 5 times each lab she completely degloves, washes her hands, puts eyedrops in, wanders through the prosection a process that takes 15 minutes each time and we cant sit and wait for her or else we'd get nothing done and then she complains to the professor that we aren't including her and that we go ahead without her. I'm fine at keeping a pace that everyone is comfortable with but when you are wasting class time to look at prosections you can do after lab and then get mad that we didn't stop and wait i start having issues.

Do we work with the same lab partners for everything or just anatomy? Im hoping we get switched up w/in our lab group section a little bit.....

Pace comment wasn't direct at you, sorry if that was confusing. No, I think you're within your rights to do what you're doing. Some people are hard to work with. You just do the best you can, and it sounds like you are. You'll work with the same anatomy lab group all year in gross lab. But in histo sections and anything else, you'll chose your own partner. So if you can bear through gross lab, you'll be ok. Plus, Spring quarter you have like 1 gross lab and that's it. Hang in there, I'm not sure what else to tell you.

Oh, and yea, I wouldn't stick my hands anywhere near her with a scalpel if you've been cut twice by her. Sheesh! Good luck!

How much time are you using a scalpel?? Maybe I am just not remembering correctly but I only remember using a scalpel to incise skin and then it was all blunt dissection with scissors, probes, fingers etc.

I also agree on the just stick it out method....

Well the "muscle" side of the dog was all just scalpel. Friday we moved onto nerves (other side of hte dog) and blood vessels which is blunt aside from the skin.

I understand what everyone is saying, and yes after rereading my post it did sound awful. 👎 However, it does not take 3 hours to do the vasculature/nerves on a leg. Sorry, but if you don't know the structures beforehand, try reading the book before class! We are routinely one of the last groups to get through a dissection, even if the lab is focused on male anatomy and we have a female that day. Anyhow. enough on that. What I was talking about is when I get in trouble for going off to answer questions from others as they sit there chatting about the latest boy band or humane society/peta function. Or if, as you suggested, after 2 hours of tutoring/watching them pick fat off a muscle I pack my kit and go home to walk my dogs. We all have our stong and weak subjects, I myself cannot hit a vein to save my life, nor do I know very much about chickens. So I understand your point. I was the guy who put the halter on the horse upsidedown. 🙂

Sure it does, if you've never dissected anything before and aren't entirely sure what you're looking for! (And knowing from the book what you're looking for is not the same as having found it yourself in the past.) Like you said, you've done this many times before... Sounds like that experience helps more than you realize.

Took us a couple of lab sessions to get our arm prepped on our dog. There's so many tiny divisions and splits of vasculature all down the arm that we had to know. That and the mess of nerves and vessels at the top further complicated things.

I heard caninerepro doesnt even use a scalpel, he just karate chops the dogs apart. That is why he is so fast.

this discussion really makes me want to take an animal anatomy class prior to vet school.

This is amazing. 👍

I personally don't think it's necessary, but do whatever you think will help 🙂 There is no definite disconnect between the people who have had anatomy previously and those who haven't (in my class, or others at NCSU from what I have heard).

How do I get my hands on the CSU anatomy CD that I have heard so much about?

A friend in my class just emailed the professor and got a copy mailed to him...I think it cost ~$40? It isn't the complete CD though because they aren't finished with it.

I agree, not necessary at all to take any prior anatomy. Those who did in our class didn't turn out any better/worse. Plus the undergrad anatomy is watered down compared to the vet med stuff - at least that's what it seems like here.

About the use of lab time - I wasn't thrilled with how our second semester LA anat lab was setup so my lab attendance was low and I and studied on weekends. I'm not sure about your school but attendance isn't usually necessary. If you don't get much benefit then find better use of your time.
