CLASS OF 2013....how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've got one more week of break before I start my next killer semester (or at least the rumor is that it is killer). I still love vet school a ton. I've learned how to study and do better in my classes without getting stressed out about it. I don't know if I can explain it, but it has really helped me this past semester. Also, my husband certainly appreciates it when I'm not freaking out about every upcoming test at home. I also am constantly thankful that I chose to come to Wisconsin. It is a really good fit for me. I don't think I would love other schools quite as much as I love it here!

Vet school is going great. I love it a million more times than I did last year. It's really hard and they expect more of you, but it's more fun and more hands on. It's starting to be what you wanted vet school to be.

off to study for a medicine exam!

I'm burned out. Again! I've learned a hell of a lot, and I don't HATE school, but I'm ready to be done. Just putting one foot in front of the other and plodding towards summer... 😳

First exam of 6 over the next two weeks was today. *sigh* We start clinical rotations here in May though, so def looking forward to it!

Our semester ends next Thursday, but like turnandburn I'm ready to be DONE. The next 10 days are going to be the longest ones that fly by ever. If that even makes sense...

First exam of 6 over the next two weeks

I'm a bit jealous. Our 6 exams are over 4 days... and clin path (next Wednesday) is supposed to take like 5 hours... UGH. I really wish they spread out our finals!

DITTO!!

I sit in the same classroom for 8 hours a day. I can't wait for third year and real live animals!

^After I posted that I almost deleted it because I was afraid I sounded too negative! I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling this way 🙄

Overall I like second year better than first year. In the next couple of weeks I get to anesthetize and recover a dog, palpate a bunch of pregnant cows, and have a venipuncture/catheterization lab. So starting this quarter, there's a lot more hands on, which is always a plus.

Right this moment though, I kind of want to shoot myself. Anesthesiology exam this morning, Small Animal Med quiz (over SIX lectures) tomorrow morning, Clin Path exam Friday (cumulative from beginning of LAST quarter), Toxicology exam next Tuesday, Small Animal Med exam next Thursday, Zoonoses final next Friday, and then Food Animal Med exam the following Monday. And last week we had a a Food Animal Med exam on Monday and a Sys Path exam on Wednesday. *Phew!* That's a lot of exams.

I haven't slept a full night (or even close, really) in over a week and I don't get to breathe until Tuesday after next. So yeah. This exact moment? Not loving vet school, haha. And in fact, I really shouldn't be here... back to Small Animal Med...

Finished my last sixth and last final around 11am. I'd be more enthusiastic, but I'm basically a zombie at this point and the test could honestly have gone anywhere from "meh" to "uh oh."

So hello long-awaited summer, hope I didn't bomb the aforementioned test so I can enjoy you!

As of Tuesday, we're officially third years here at Mizzou. Last block and the block before it (basically from January 3rd to now) were really rough. We lost some more people (now down to 104 from 117), and we may lose even more from this last block. I think they learned from some big mistakes made with our class, so next year will be better for the class of 2014... I hope. I would be more excited about being a third year if we hadn't already been in classes for it before and throughout finals, as well as finishing up the last block of second year. We had an hour long break from our last final to the first class of the day, and I have never looked so forward to a weekend in my life LOL.

We've been getting a lot more hands on and we start surgery lab this block, which is scary and exciting and sobering, all at once. We do terminal surgeries here, so all of us are mentally preparing for our first one, which takes place in about two weeks.

After this last 8 week block that ends on June 29th, we'll have our last summer break... in theory. Many of us are already starting externships when we get out, and most will last throughout the summer. To all of you who have breaks earlier than us, I'm jealous! The burn out here is incredibly high, too. Clinics begin in October, and I'm hoping that will re-light some of our fires. It's been a long year. We already have our core clinic schedules, so most of us spend entire days dreaming about that. Once we get our electives schedule, I'm sure this will only increase LOL.

Overall, I did like second year more than first year because it's full of medical application, forming your own lists of diagnoses from case examples, going through treatment plans, and feeling more like a doctor and less like a student. I feel much more prepared for clinics now than I did as a first year, and I'm really just ready to be out of the classrooms. For all of you who have three straight years of lecture, you have my sympathy, but at least you get longer vacations than we do LOL. I'm pretty sure the bags under my eyes will never go away, I've never loved a bed so much in my life, and I'm looking forward to what the future brings.

We are on the last day of selectives thus the last day of this academic year. I still strongly dislike vet school. Last semester was better than last year, this semester a single professor and medical illness made the semester torturous. I have really come to resent professors that are lacking in any sort of educational training (to the point of telling me that adults don't have ADD) and then act like students are skipping out of laziness if a student misses classes despite a medical excuse (current, acute illness requiring IV infusions of antibiotics.)

Either way, I am grateful to have third year ahead of me, and then onto clinicals. I'm tired of being exhausted, sick, and frustrated. I'm looking forward to some self-care time this summer, and completing my thesis.

We still have 3 more weeks....1 week of class and 2 weeks of exams. Not looking forward to that.

Oh well -- it's at least kind of nice to be on campus when all the undergrads are gone. 🙂

Now that I've had a couple weeks post-finals to breathe, I thought I would chime in. I'm still hanging in there. Vet school is definitely extremely difficult, but I am starting to find my rhythm. This semester I ended up being extremely busy with other things a lot of the time and had less and less time to study. (I was extremely involved in clubs, etc. and had some extensive externship applications to complete). But I still love my school, and I am hoping that will never change.

So I officially finished my classroom learning last month and am finishing my first block on clinics this week!!! I can't believe how fast the past 3 years have gone by! But I absolutely LOVE clinics and it was definitely worth the wait! It's way better than sitting in a classroom all day and I am learning so much more in clinics than I ever did sitting in the classroom. It's definitely awesome to be applying everything we've learned over the past 3 years. I love how LSU gives us 15 months in clinics vs. the typical 12.

I am finishing up radiology, and next week I jump into my surgery rotation! So excited!!! Hope everyone else is having an awesome 3rd year! 14 months til graduation!!! :soexcited::highfive:

Hey Turtlelover!! I can't believe how fast it went for you, either!!

Congrats everyone on surviving up to this point. It's inspiring.

I'm super jealous! We don't start clinics until May 4th (the day after finishing our last final, ugh) and I am so ready to be done with classes.

I hope your rotations continue to go well! Do you have any awesome externships lined up?

Wow, sorry to hear that. We had a week off from our last final before starting clinics.

And yes, I do have some awesome externships lined up! I am going to The Georgia Sea Turtle Center for 3 weeks to work on sea turtles and wild life (mostly sea birds), VCA Alameda East Veterinary Clinic in Denver, CO for 4 weeks to work with Dr. Fitzgerald (Animal Planets Emergency Vets Show)! and finally I'll be at the Vancouver Aquarium for 5 weeks, right before graduation!

I can't wait! Georgia is this July, but all the rest are next year. Do you have anything planned for externships yet?

Nice! They all sound awesome! And yep, my externships are all planned. I'll be at the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, IA for 4 weeks in July, at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota in Roseville, MN for 2 weeks in September, theoretically at the Kansas City Zoo in MO for 6 weeks in Jan/Feb (still need to have dates re-confirmed), and at the Omaha Zoo in NE for 6 weeks in March/April. I won't have any off blocks but I'm super excited for all of them 😍

Oh man, I'm jealous of both of you!! I don't start clinics until June 18th. It's the week after finals for us, as well. A week off would be nice!

Even though I won't start clinics for another 3.5 months, it still feels really close! I go back and forth between really excited and completely terrified, haha! And the idea of being a doctor in 15 months... completely surreal.

We start two weeks from today.

Nine more days and six finals to get through before I'm in clinics. My first rotation is ICU. I'm kind of terrified but it'll be a nice crash course in how things work. The only downside is that it means I get to start clinics next Thursday night (May 3rd) at 8pm instead of on Friday (like almost everyone else).

At least classes will be done forever!

OMG! I just got the official email from the Dean of Students telling us that registration for the NAVLE is now open and the deadline to sign up for the NAVLE is Aug. 1!!! Holy cow, that's a scary thought that I'll be taking that test in the next 5 months....time sure does fly by!

I definitely remember that feeling! good luck!

Bumping this thread to see how everyones going. The light at the end of the tunnel is soooo close 🙂

I took my NAVLE on Monday. It feels GREAT to be done with that!!

:banana::banana::banana: :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Class of 2013!!! Can you believe we are almost done with vet school??

It seems like just yesterday when I moved to Louisiana to start vet school, and now it's almost over. I took my NAVLE last month, my senior pictures this month, and who knows what's coming next month! Less than 5 months left until the big graduation day!!

For all you 1st-3rd years reading this, and soon to be vet students, vet school will go by super fast so make sure to have some fun along the way 🙂

😀🙂😛

Only 4 months left until we're done with clinics! Another month on Navle results and 6 weeks or so on match results and then I can get on to planning for next year.

I have about five and a half months. Unbelievable. The last 3.5 years have really flown by, especially the last bit on clinics! And I have to say, I love clinics!! So much better than the last 3 years. 😀

Unfortunately I think I'll be retaking the NAVLE in April, but I'm still anxious for the scores. And I'm currently planning my big move to Philadelphia, so exciting and scary at the same time!

Why does it take so long to release NAVLE results?

Why does it take so long to release NAVLE results?

It takes so long because they wait for everybody to take it (it's open for about a month) and then they go over the scores and adjust accordingly. They usually curve it a lot 🙂 And they probably get all of their statistics in order and the scores also have to go to the state in which you applied in. We got an email the other day making it sound like we will find out next week whether or not we passed. We find out online if we passed or failed and then they mail you your actual score report several days later.

Well, veterinary school is officially over for me! I graduated 3 weeks ago, passed my state board exam, and will be starting my new job as a small animal rotating medicine and surgery intern in ONE week!! Yikes, these 4 years sure did fly by! Thanks everyone for your support for the last 5 years I've been on this site and good luck to everybody else finishing vet school and to those who are just applying!
