Thats what I plan on doing Prions...Taking the MCAT in August. The way I see it. If I am considered late on that cycle then I will be way early for the next. hehehehe

Sounds good. 👍 I think you'll be fine. I would submit your primary in June and just churn out those secondaries while you're waiting for your score to come in. I only had to wait (till my score came in) for 2 schools to send me a secondary.

Sorry, should have clarified there. Since I'm likely to be a fringe candidate (unless I really rock the MCAT), I'm following the advice of many here to apply early, early, and maybe a little earlier.

If anyone thinks that's bonkers, speak up. I'd love to save the money I'd spend on the trip and my current sanity.

Honestly, I think taking the MCAT in July is fine. If you turn in your primary in June you'll start getting secondaries from some schools and you can work on those while you wait for your score to come in. You should be complete by August and IMHO, that's still pretty early.

The real problem for me is that my MCAT score will basically be the only part of the Big Two giving my applications any validity whatsoever, since my GPA is garbage. Should get over most DO schools' cut-offs (thanks for the grade replacement!), but it's basement either way. Ah, the joys of Georgia Tech.

You know what, I was looking at the college book and it said that LECOM had a 3.3 cutoff but I know of a friend that got in with a 3.0s/3.1u gpa. After looking I realized that there are people on MDAPPS that have got in with a sub 3.3 gpa. I figured I would mention this to you to keep in mind.

I am not sure how things are upheld but I know I will be applying with a 3.1s/3.2-3.3 gpa. Lets hope LECOM and others give me a shot, judging from the past they will.

Seems like we may have similar circumstances, rock that MCAT, get that 30+ (ha I'm talking to myself here) and then get your apps in ASAP. If you don't get in the first round, you really won't be able to have any regrets knowing you did your all (again talking to myself). Best of luck.

LECOM applicants must meet the following minimum admissions requirements:

Applicants must have a minimum 2.7 science grade point average. Successful candidates typically have both science and overall grade point averages of 3.2 or above.


I am sure there is wiggle room - I don't believe that there is an administrative assistant that goes through each application and throws those with lower than a 3.2 in the trash.

Heard from a guy who interviewed at MUSC a few years ago, said they curved his 3.3 to a 3.9. Seems about fair.

On the AACOMAS site, the medical college book that has a description of each one, under additional information for LECOM says 3.3 required......i got nervous. Its the 2007 or 2008 version.

Oops, sorry. In my mind there was an inflection of the statement to make it a question. Did not carry over to text at all. Just one of my 'DOH' moments.

And I didn't think its asking them to be buddies, but a good way to get questions answered. For some reason I imagine all admissions personnel to be sitting behind a judge desk (or whatever it is judges sit at), except that it is forty feet tall. Think the Alice in Wonderland trial scene. Anyways, the idea of them being people you could talk to was a 'oooooohhhhh' moment. 🙂

I slipped and my big but is dragging on my MCAT studies. UGH, getting the DO LOR is turning out to be quite harder than I expected. UGH

Y'know, something I was considering doing was just search my insurance's list of GPs until I found a DO. I was going to just start quizzing them mid check-up. I wussed out, though.

Which part do you find difficult? I thought it was going to be like that too, and then I ended up just going to lunch with a DO in the area. When I asked her about shadowing, she told me that it was boring and that I shouldn't do it. Then I asked, how do you get a LOR? She gave me a funny look and said "Oh, I can absolutely write you that," like it was no big deal. So, while being able to shadow for a while to get to know them is awesome and nice, it is not viewed as completely necessary by every doctor, as I found out.

I was still sad about the not shadowing part though, I really wanted to get a feel for pediatrics.

Anyway, keep at it! If no one is letting you shadow, then offer to meet them just to talk about being a doctor or something under that premise. Then ask how they got a LOR from a DO. Hopefully that will open a door to that conversation. Either way, good luck!

Maybe others can post their "How I found a DO" or "How I got a LOR" story for inspiration?

I would totally be slacking @_@ but I paid money for a class. Which means I actually have to attend. Which, I believe, was the whole point of putting down money for a class. But other than sitting through the lecture, I havent been doing any outside studying - major slacking on that end.

And your post made me laugh. It sounds like one of those inspirational posters. Or perhaps an Uncle Sam ad. Or an infomercial. Something along the lines of "Don't let slacking happen to YOU!"

Yes. Of course you will need to note on your app that you will be taking _/08. Once you get your scores you have them released to AACOMAS and they will send them to all your schools.

Yeah we got rain and sleet this morning and we've been getting quite a bit of snow this afternoon. I actually don't know how the roads are since I've been home all day but schools are closing all over the place. I do love snow though! 😍

i've always wanted to go into orthopedics or general sports medicine, but i have recently been interested/intrigued by the preventive medicine specialty. it seems like something I would enjoy doing ( i know i enjoy learning about it) but i dont really know too much about what exactly preventive medicine docs do. i might try and find one to shadow over summer.

That said, I'll figure it out when I get there. What I know now is a fraction of what I will know after my first year. It's like trying to guess what the economy will do when you only know very, very basic macro.

ob/gyn all the way! I didn't even realize there was a preventive medicine specialty. I'd like to know more about it too! I definitely plan on emphasizing preventative medicine as an ob/gyn as cervical and breast cancer can be prevented/treated, respectively, with early detection. I'm getting more excited each day about the application process. I haven't narrowed it down but I think the schools I will apply to are PCOM-GA, LMU-DCOM, Kansasi City (first choice), AT Stills (both campuses), and AZCOM. Maybe Pacific and New England. Um I like diseases and pediatrics. Or should I say that I think I would like pediatrics, but I havent done any shadowing yet. Neonatal physiology was by far the most fun day I've had in class for a while.
